Risk of Chronic Kidney Disease and Implications in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation for the Development of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events with Machine Learning.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) often overlap and may amplify cardiovascular risk. Whether renal dysfunction should be incorporated into composite cardiovascular endpoints in AF remains uncertain. We aimed to quantify AF-associated risk of MACE and evaluate the incremental prognostic value of kidney measures (eGFR and albuminuria) to inform composite outcomes and clinical management. METHODS: We performed a retrospective, community-based cohort study of 40,297 adults aged 65-95 years. Individuals with incident AF (n = 2574) were followed for 5 years. MACE

Intraperitoneal rescue stem cell therapy in experimental NEC mitigates intestinal, pulmonary, and neuroinflammatory injury in mice.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating condition associated with long-term complications including NDI (neurodevelopmental impairment), chronic lung disease, and intestinal complications. Umbilical-cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (USCs) have been shown to improve intestinal outcomes when given prophylactically in preclinical NEC models. We hypothesized that intervention with USCs following onset of experimental NEC would also improve outcomes. METHODS: NEC was induced in 5-day-old mouse pups through formula gavage, hypoxia, and hypothermia. Control pups were left wit

Preface: 13th International Workshop Reunion Island Reproductive Immunology, immunological tolerance and immunology of preeclampsia; 9-12 December 2024.

The preface to the 13th International Workshop on Reproductive Immunology, Immunological Tolerance, and Immunology of Preeclampsia (Reunion Island, 9-12 December 2024) pays tribute to the late Professor Chris Redman, a foundational figure in recognising preeclampsia as a heterogeneous syndrome, and reflects on the ongoing influence of his two-stage model. Presentations emphasised phenotypic distinctions and immunological mechanisms. Pierre-Yves Robillard, using a comprehensive Reunion Island perinatal database, delineated three subtypes of small-for-gestational-age infants, revealing that 77 %

Lyopreservation and Nonionic Decellularization of Human Amnion Scaffolds for Enhancing Regeneration in Chronic Nonhealing Ulcers.

Chronic nonhealing ulcers are responsible for considerable morbidity, given the increasing prevalence of type II diabetes and other comorbid conditions that further worsen healing. This study introduced shelf-stable decellularized and lyopreserved human amnion grafts for treating difficult-to-heal wounds. The processing approach (comprising a unique combination of nonionic surfactants and trehalose lyopreservation) applied to develop these bioscaffolds maximized the retention of sulfated glycosaminoglycans while enhancing both tensile property and hydrophilicity. Postprocessing, the tensile pr

Noncommunicable chronic comorbidities, perceived social support, depression, and health-related quality of life among people with HIV: a structural equation modeling study.

BACKGROUND: People with HIV (PWH) face substantial physical and mental health challenges, which translates to poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL) relative to the general population. Additionally, they have a higher risk of developing the non-communicable chronic comorbidities (NCCs). However, the complex interplay between the risk of NCCs, perceived social support (PSS), depression, and HRQoL among PWH has not yet been adequately elucidated. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the impact of NCCs risk on HRQoL among PWH, and to examine the mediating roles of PSS and depression in

Development and validation of a nomogram for predicting COPD: A nationwide population-based study in South Korea.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains a significant global health burden exacerbated by tobacco smoking, occupational exposure, and air pollution. COPD is one of the top 3 causes of death worldwide. In South Korea, the COPD burden is expected to increase due to ongoing exposure to risk factors and the aging population. COPD is extensively underdiagnosed or underestimated, owing to a lack of public awareness. This study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram for COPD by using national data to promote early diagnosis and intervention. This study drew on a dataset from the 7th Ko

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among the adult population ranges to 19.1%. The disease's impact has increased in low-resource settings due to a lack of knowledge about the condition and its risk factors. Diabetes is one of the numerous causes of CKD. Despite this, little was known in Ethiopia, particularly in the study area. This study aimed to identify the determinants of CKD among diabetic patients enrolled in care and follow up at pastoralist health facility of Jinka General Hospital (JGH), Southern Ethiopia, 2023. METHODS: An institutional-based cr

Risk factors for 30-day hospital readmission in patients with diabetic foot.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic foot (DF) is part of the natural history of diabetes mellitus, ulceration being a severe complication with a prevalence of approximately 6.3 %, which confers a significant economic burden. Hospital readmission in the first thirty (30) days is considered a measure of quality of healthcare and it's been identified that the most preventable causes are the ones that occur in this period. This study seeks to identify the risk factors associated with readmission of patients with DF. METHODS: A case-control study was done by performing a secondary analysis of a database. Descr

Urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin as a biomarker of acute kidney injury and prognosis in decompensated chronic liver disease: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) heralds deterioration in patients with decompensated chronic liver disease (DCLD). Serum creatinine (sCr), a component of the model for end-stage liver disease-sodium (MELD-Na) prognostic score, has limitations in patients with DCLD. We evaluated the prognostic role of urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) in DCLD and its ability to sub-type AKI. METHODS: Total 147 consecutive patients hospitalized between June 2018 and June 2020 for complications of DCLD were evaluated. Urine NGAL was estimated and demographic, clinical and biochemical

Differentiating interstitial lung diseases from other respiratory diseases using electronic nose technology.

INTRODUCTION: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) may be difficult to distinguish from other respiratory diseases due to overlapping clinical presentation. Recognition of ILD is often late, causing delay which has been associated with worse clinical outcome. Electronic nose (eNose) sensor technology profiles volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath and has potential to detect ILD non-invasively. We assessed the accuracy of differentiating breath profiles of patients with ILD from patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer using eNose technology.
