[Comorbidities of sleep-disordered breathing in children].

Sleep-related respiratory disorders in children, especially childhood sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome, are associated with a wide range of comorbidities affecting the central nervous system, cardiovascular and metabolic systems, and growth. The two most important factors contributing to the physiopathology of this disorder are intermittent hypoxia and sleep fragmentation, which seem to cause the systemic inflammatory response resulting in these end-organ consequences.

[Zinc involvements in the brain].

Central nervous system (CNS) concentrates almost 10% of total zinc in the human body. Imbalances in zinc concentration are associated with numerous CNS diseases. Zinc deficiency is associated with nervous anorexia, major depression, cognitive impairment, and uncontrolled behavior. Our data reveal that plasma zinc concentration is decreased in major depression and it significantly increases following sertraline or amitriptyline treatment. Also, we found that ZnCl2 administration while inducing morphine-dependence in rats significantly decreases the symptoms of opioid-withdrawal syndrome. Recent

Speech and language skills and cognitive functioning in children with Apert syndrome: a pilot study.

There are few studies that report findings on the speech and language characteristics of Apert syndrome and little is known about the cognitive profile of the syndrome. The current study addresses this gap and explores speech, language, resonance/voice, attention oro-motor and cognitive skills in a group of 10 children (4;1-5;11) with Apert syndrome. The speech and language battery included: the CELF-Pre-school, the PLS-3, the Vocal Profile Analysis, GOS.SP.ASS, PACS; and the Brodsky Drooling Scale. Subscales of the BAS II-Early Years Version were used to assess cognition. Data were also colle

Roles Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Early Maladaptive Schemas In Antisocial Personality Disorder: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is characterized by a pattern of negligence towards social norms, illicit and aggressive conduct, and lack of remorse. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and subsequent development of Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS) play a significant role in psychopathology vulnerability, including personality disorders. However, the evidence on the link between cognitive and environmental vulnerability in ASPD specifically is still limited. The aim of the present review is to analyze and discuss the available literature exploring the role of specific ACEs a

Impact of cumulative exposure to anticholinergic and sedative drugs on cognition in older adults: a memory clinic cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to anticholinergic and sedative drugs could be a modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline. The objective of this study was to measure the association between previous cumulative anticholinergic and sedative drug exposure (Drug Burden Index) and cognitive decline. METHODS: A cohort study (MEMORA cohort) was conducted in a French memory clinic for patients attending a consultation between November 2014 and December 2020, with at least 2 Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) measurements (≥ 6 months apart) and available medication data from the local Primary Hea

Trauma-related psychiatric and behavioral conditions are uniquely associated with sustained attention dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: It is increasingly recognized that trauma victims, particularly Veterans, have co-occurring psychological and physical conditions that impact cognition, especially the domains of sustained attention and executive functioning. Although previous work has generally attempted to isolate the unique cognitive effects of common combat-related comorbidities, less work has been done to examine how these conditions co-occur, and whether unique cognitive signatures accompany certain clinical combinations. METHOD: To address this gap, we examined how several deployment-related conditions were

Effects of erythropoietin on depressive symptoms and neurocognitive deficits in depression and bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Depression and bipolar disorder are associated with reduced neural plasticity and deficits in memory, attention and executive function. Drug treatments for these affective disorders have insufficient clinical effects in a large group and fail to reverse cognitive deficits. There is thus a need for more effective treatments which aid cognitive function. Erythropoietin (Epo) is involved in neuroplasticity and is a candidate for future treatment of affective disorders. The investigators have demonstrated that a single dose of Epo improves cognitive function and reduces neurocognitive

Cholesterol and executive dysfunction in adolescents with eating disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) in adolescents, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, are frequently accompanied by executive dysfunction, a set of higher-order cognitive processes governing self-regulation, planning, and decision-making. While impulsivity and poor inhibitory control predominate in bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder, anorexia nervosa is often characterized by cognitive rigidity and overcontrol. These contrasting neuropsychological patterns may represent distinct manifestations of executive dysfunction. Emerging evidence suggests that lipid metab

Recent advances in diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for canine cognitive dysfunction.

Canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder among geriatric dogs, characterized by disorientation, interaction changes, sleep-wake cycle disturbances, house soiling, activity level changes, and anxiety. Canine cognitive dysfunction is currently underdiagnosed due to the lack of an objective and reliable diagnostic tool, and treatment options are severely limited. Importantly, CCD shares common pathological hallmarks of human Alzheimer disease, such as β-amyloid accumulation, τ protein phosphorylation, neuronal loss, and neuroinflammation. β-Amyloid deposits in Alz

Gender Differences in Treatment Outcomes for Eating Disorders: A Case-Matched, Retrospective Pre-Post Comparison.

Eating disorders (EDs) are increasingly emerging as a health risk in men, yet men remain underrepresented in ED research, including interventional trials. This underrepresentation of men may have facilitated the development of women-centered ED treatments that result in suboptimal outcomes for men. The present study retrospectively compared pre- vs. post-treatment outcomes between age-, diagnosis-, and length-of-treatment-matched samples of n = 200 men and n = 200 women with Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), Binge Eating Disorder (BED), or Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (ED

Treatment with buprenorphine prior to EcoHIV infection of mice prevents the development of neurocognitive impairment.

Approximately 15-40% of people living with HIV develop HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders, HAND, despite successful antiretroviral therapy. There are no therapies to treat these disorders. HIV enters the CNS early after infection, in part by transmigration of infected monocytes. Currently, there is a major opioid epidemic in the United States. Opioid use disorder in the context of HIV infection is important because studies show that opioids exacerbate HIV-mediated neuroinflammation that may contribute to more severe cognitive deficits. Buprenorphine is an opioid derivate commonly prescrib

Disordered gambling among Chinese casino employees.

A previous study suggests that casino employees are at higher risk for disordered gambling than non-casino employees. The present study examined the cognitive correlates of the gambling involvement of Chinese casino employees. These potential cognitive correlates included attitudes toward the gaming industry and gambling activities, perceived job meaningfulness, and job stress. One hundred and nineteen Chinese respondents (M = 57; F = 62) working as dealers in Macao casinos were recruited through convenience sampling to fill out a questionnaire. The results revealed that about 7% of the respon

Patient reports of cognitive problems are not associated with neuropsychological test performance in bariatric surgery candidates.

BACKGROUND: Recent work shows that cognitive deficits are common in bariatric surgery candidates and are associated with reduced weight loss at 12 months postoperatively. Because preoperative neuropsychological assessment is not available for all patients at all sites, many care providers ask patients to self-report their level of cognitive dysfunction. However, the accuracy of patient self-report of cognitive abilities has not been empirically examined. METHODS: Eighty-one bariatric surgery candidates completed self-report measures of cognitive functioning and neuropsychological tests of mem

Chronic subthreshold rTMS transiently disrupts learning but enhances memory and flexibility in healthy rats.

Objective.Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an emerging non-invasive neuromodulation technique with therapeutic potential for the treatment of cognitive disorders. However, its effects on fundamental learning and memory processes in the healthy brain remain poorly understood. We have previously shown that subthreshold rTMS delivered with a miniaturized coil modulates neuronal activities and evoked potentials, but whether these physiological effects translate into cognitive changes remains unknown. Here, we systematically characterize the effects of subthreshold rTMS on lea

Selective Effects of Substantia Nigra and Locus Coeruleus Degeneration on Cognition in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: The substantia nigra (SN) and locus coeruleus (LC) are among the first brain regions to degenerate in Parkinson's disease (PD). This has important implications for early cognitive deficits because these nuclei are sources of ascending neuromodulators (i.e., dopamine and noradrenaline) that support various cognitive functions such as learning, memory, and executive function. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to investigate the selective and independent contributions of SN and LC degeneration to cognitive deficits in PD. METHODS: We ran a cross-sectional study testing patients with PD and old

Are sleep disturbances modifiable risk factors for mild cognitive impairment and dementia? A systematic review of large studies.

Studies have shown a connection between sleep disorders, mild cognitive impairment and dementia. In this context, the present systematic review aimed to determine in large studies whether sleep disturbances are modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline. Following the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, this systematic review selected 15 studies, with large cohort of subjects included (more than 1000 participants), who were longitudinally observed. Studies predominantly used questionnaires and interviews to collect subjective data on sleep. Eleven studies were based on subjecti

Cognitive outcomes from the randomised, active-controlled Ketamine for Adult Depression Study (KADS).

BACKGROUND: Due to its rapid antidepressant effect, ketamine has recently been clinically translated for people with treatment-resistant depression. However, its cognitive profile remains unclear, particularly with repeated and higher doses. In the present study, we report the cognitive results from a recent large multicentre randomised controlled trial, the Ketamine for Adult Depression Study (KADS). METHODS: In this randomised, double-blind, active-controlled, parallel group, multicentre phase 3 trial study we investigated potential cognitive changes following repeated treatment of subcutan

Different Associated Factors of Subjective Cognitive Complaints in Patients With Early- and Late-Onset Parkinson's Disease.

Background: Subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs), which are associated with a higher risk of cognitive decline, are widespread in the patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The previous studies have reported inconsistent factors related to SCCs in the patients with late-onset PD (LOPD), and there is limited information on SCCs in the patients with early-onset PD (EOPD). Objective: We aimed to investigate the factors associated with SCCs in the drug-naïve patients with EOPD and LOPD without cognitive impairment. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 332 drug-naïve patients with PD, am

Testing the Mechanism of Action of Computerized Cognitive Training in Young Adults with Depression: Protocol for a Blinded, Randomized, Controlled Treatment Trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression is associated with a broad range of cognitive deficits, including processing speed (PS) and executive functioning (EF). Cognitive symptoms commonly persist with the resolution of affective symptoms and increase risk of relapse and recurrence. The cognitive control network is comprised of brain areas implicated in EF and mood regulatory functions. Prior research has demonstrated the effectiveness of computerized cognitive training (CCT) focused on PS and EF in mitigating both cognitive and affective symptoms of depression. METHODS: Ninety participants aged 18-29 with a c

Genome-wide analysis reveals extensive genetic overlap between schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and intelligence.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) are severe mental disorders associated with cognitive impairment, which is considered a major determinant of functional outcome. Despite this, the etiology of the cognitive impairment is poorly understood, and no satisfactory cognitive treatments exist. Increasing evidence indicates that genetic risk for SCZ may contribute to cognitive impairment, whereas the genetic relationship between BD and cognitive function remains unclear. Here, we combined large genome-wide association study data on SCZ (n = 82,315), BD (n = 51,710), and general intelligenc
