Motor learning and transfer between real and virtual environments in young people with autism spectrum disorder: A prospective randomized cross over controlled trial.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction, including impaired multisensory integration, which might negatively impact cognitive and motor skill performance, and hence negatively affect learning of tasks. Considering that tasks in virtual environment may provide an engaging tool as adjuncts to conventional therapies, we set out to compare motor performance between young people with ASD and a typically developing (TD) control group that underwent coincident timing tasks based on Kinect (no physical contact) and on Keyboar

Cultural adaptation and harmonization of four Nordic translations of the revised Premature Infant Pain Profile (PIPP-R).

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants are especially vulnerable to pain. The intensive treatment often necessary for their survival unfortunately includes many painful interventions and procedures. Untreated pain can lead to both short- and long-term negative effects. The challenge of accurately detecting pain has been cited as a major reason for lack of pain management in these non-verbal patients. The Premature Infant Pain Profile (PIPP) is one of the most extensively validated measures for assessing procedural pain in premature infants. A revised version, PIPP-R, was recently published and is reporte

Refining a questionnaire to assess breast cancer knowledge and barriers to screening in Kenya: Psychometric assessment of the BCAM.

BACKGROUND: Our study objective was to determine the validity and reliability of the breast module of a cancer awareness measure (BCAM) among adult women in western Kenya. METHODS: The study was conducted between October and November 2012, following three breast cancer screening events. Purposive and systematic random sampling methods were used to identity 48 women for cognitive focus group discussions, and 1061 (594 who attended vs. 467 who did not attend screening events) for surveys, respectively. Face and psychometric validity of the BCAM survey was assessed using cognitive testing, facto

Cognitive Remediation Interventions for Gambling Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Various therapeutic approaches are available for the treatment of gambling disorder (GD), especially cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT; the most widely used treatment). However, CBT has high dropout and relapse rates as well as non-compliance issues, which may be partly due to resistance to changing core characteristics, such as executive functioning, attention, and emotional regulation abnormalities. Finding new therapeutic approaches to treat GD is thus a key challenge. Cognitive remediation (CR) interventions represent a promising approach to GD management, which has recently been demonstra

Early skin-to-skin contact or incubator for very preterm infants: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Skin-to-skin care immediately following delivery is a common practice for term infants and has been shown to improve cardiorespiratory stability, facilitate early bonding, and promote breastfeeding. Since 2007, the use of skin-to-skin care has been practiced for preterm infants from 32 weeks of gestation in the delivery room at St. Olav's University Hospital. In the present study we aim to investigate whether skin-to-skin care following delivery is safe, and how it affects early and late outcomes compared to standard care for very preterm infants. METHODS/DESIGN: A randomized cont

Zero-shot multimodal pain estimation via synthetic pain simulation and domain-invariant learning.

INTRODUCTION: Pain assessment in non-communicative populations-particularly neonates and cognitively impaired patients-remains a critical clinical challenge, as current automated methods require labeled pain datasets that are both ethically problematic and scarce for vulnerable populations. METHODS: We propose a framework trained on zero labeled real pain examples from the target population, combining synthetic pain simulation with unsupervised domain adaptation. Using latent diffusion models, we generate 50,000 realistic pain scenarios spanning facial expressions, physiological signals (hear

Assessing the approach to perinatal mental health screening and treatment in maternal-child health clinics in Western Kenya.

Integrating mental health care into well-attended health services, such as maternal-child health (MCH), offers a promising approach to increasing access to mental health care. To inform integration, we assessed the current approach to screening and treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) in MCH facilities in Western Kenya. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among the facility managers ("in-charges") at 20 MCH facilities in Western Kenya. Trained data collectors administered questionnaires to assess facility infrastructure and human resources, perinatal mental health screeni

A Bibliometric Analysis of Music's Role in Promoting Well-Being in Health Science Research.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between music and well-being has gained scholarly interest due to its implications for mental health and rehabilitation. However, no large-scale bibliometric analysis has captured global trends in this interdisciplinary field. This study addresses this gap by systematically mapping music and well-being research, identifying dominant themes and areas needing investigation. METHODS: We analyzed 16,585 peer-reviewed articles from Scopus (inception to May 2025) across psychology, medicine, and neuroscience. Using co-occurrence network analysis with VOSviewer 1.6.20, L

Organization-level determinants for low secondary traumatic stress in lay counselors delivering trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy in Kenya.

Eighty percent of the world's youth live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet access to trauma-focused mental health care in these settings remains limited despite a high burden of mental health disorders and trauma exposure among youth. Task-shifting models that train lay counselors to deliver evidence-based treatments can expand access to care, yet delivering trauma-focused treatment may increase counselors' vulnerability to secondary traumatic stress (STS). Organization-level support may play an important role in sustaining counselor well-being, yet little is known about which o

Learning how to talk about approaching death: results from a pre-test post-test trial on the effectiveness of a blended-learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Caring for dying individuals is a key aspect of many clinical and medical practices. However, training and reflection opportunities on conversations between healthcare professionals, dying patients, and caregivers are limited. To address this gap, we developed a blended-learning approach focusing on effective communication about approaching death, termed Talking About Dying (TAD). This study aimed to evaluate the impact of this approach on pre- and postgraduate medical learners' knowledge, anxiety, self-efficacy, and skills related to TAD. METHODS: A pre-test post-test trial with

Perception and Impact of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Patients With Chronic Neuropathic Pain: A Longitudinal Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is recommended as a third-line treatment for chronic neuropathic pain. Because of its non-invasive nature and limited side effects, it is considered a good therapeutic option. rTMS efficacy on chronic neuropathic pain has been demonstrated in numerous quantitative studies. However, there are no qualitative studies to support these quantitative data. METHODS: Included patients presented with peripheral neuropathic pain related to polyneuropathy (n = 6), radiculopathy (n = 3) and traumatic or surgical nerve injury (n = 3). The targ

Clinical and transcranial sonographic correlates of orthostatic hypotension in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Autonomic dysfunction is common across the course of Parkinson's disease (PD). We aimed to delineate clinical and transcranial sonography (TCS) correlates of orthostatic hypotension (OH) in PD and to develop machine-learning-based markers for PD-OH. METHODS: We consecutively enrolled confirmed PD patients (n = 311) at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University from September 2017 to March 2023 and classified them by OH status using orthostatic blood pressure testing. Motor symptoms (UPDRS-III) and non-motor burden (NMSQ, FSS, HAMA, HAMD, PDQ-39) were assessed. TCS measure

Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus restores spatial reversal learning in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Spatial learning and navigation are supported by distinct memory systems in the human brain such as the hippocampus-based navigational system and the striatum-cortex-based system involved in motor sequence, habit and reversal learning. Here, we studied the role of subthalamic circuits in hippocampus-associated spatial memory and striatal-associated spatial reversal learning formation in patients with Parkinson's disease, who underwent a deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus. Deep brain stimulation patients (Parkinson's disease-subthalamic nucleus: n = 26) and healthy subjects (n =

A pilot randomized controlled trial of a cognitive-behavioral therapy guided self-help mobile app for the post-acute treatment of anorexia nervosa: A registered report.

INTRODUCTION: Relapse following acute treatment for anorexia nervosa (AN) is common. Evidence suggests cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) may be useful in the post-acute period, but few patients have access to trained providers. mHealth technologies have potential to increase access to high-quality care for AN, including in the post-acute period. The aim of this study is to estimate the preliminary feasibility and effectiveness of a CBT-based mobile intervention plus treatment as usual (TAU), offered with and without an accompanying social networking feature. METHOD: In the current pilot rand

Automated detection of myocardial infarction using binary Harry Hawks feature selection and ensemble KNN classifier.

Myocardial infarction (MI), referred to as a heart attack, is a life-threatening condition that happens due to blood clots, typically, blood flow to a portion of the heart muscle is blocked. The cardiac muscle may become permanently damaged if there is insufficient oxygen and blood flow to the affected area. It's crucial to treat MI as soon as possible because even a small delay might have serious effects. The primary diagnostic tool to track and identify the signs of MI is the electrocardiogram (ECG). The complexity of MI signals combined with noise makes it difficult for clinicians to make a

Neural representation in M1 and S1 cortex of bilateral hand actions during prehension.

Bimanual movements that require coordinated actions of the two hands may be coordinated by synchronous bilateral activation of somatosensory and motor cortical areas in both hemispheres, by enhanced activation of individual neurons specialized for bimanual actions, or by both mechanisms. To investigate cortical neural mechanisms that mediate unimanual and bimanual prehension, we compared actions of the left and right hands in a reach to grasp-and-pull instructed-delay task. Spike trains were recorded with multiple electrode arrays placed in the hand area of primary motor (M1) and somatosensory

Is less more? Dismantling imaginal retraining and examining the effects of psychoeducation and embodied cognition on craving and alcohol consumption in problem drinkers: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Imaginal retraining, a type of approach-bias-modification performed in one's own imagination, is effective in reducing alcohol craving in problem drinkers. This study aims to segregate three main components of the original technique and compare their effectiveness in reducing craving and alcohol consumption. METHODS: The study was conducted online. Interested individuals wishing to reduce their alcohol consumption underwent a baseline assessment (T0), whereby a total of N = 200 included participants were randomly assigned to one of four study arms. There were three active groups r

Developing an Explainable Machine Learning-Based Personalised Dementia Risk Prediction Model: A Transfer Learning Approach With Ensemble Learning Algorithms.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) has its onset many decades before dementia develops, and work is ongoing to characterise individuals at risk of decline on the basis of early detection through biomarker and cognitive testing as well as the presence/absence of identified risk factors. Risk prediction models for AD based on various computational approaches, including machine learning, are being developed with promising results. However, these approaches have been criticised as they are unable to generalise due to over-reliance on one data source, poor internal and external validations, and lack of under

Select Atrophied Regions in Alzheimer disease (SARA): An improved volumetric model for identifying Alzheimer disease dementia.

INTRODUCTION: Volumetric biomarkers for Alzheimer disease (AD) are attractive due to their wide availability and ease of administration, but have traditionally shown lower diagnostic accuracy than measures of neuropathological contributors to AD. Our purpose was to optimize the diagnostic specificity of structural MRIs for AD using quantitative, data-driven techniques. METHODS: This retrospective study assembled several non-overlapping cohorts (total n = 1287) with publicly available data and clinical patients from Barnes-Jewish Hospital (data gathered 1990-2018). The Normal Aging Cohort (n =
