Empowering communities: a case study of integrated knowledge translation in the A/C study.

BACKGROUND: In Ontario, Black people make up approximately 5% of the population and routinely account for over 20% of new HIV diagnoses. The A/C Study, a community-led cross-sectional study among Black Canadians, was designed to examine the factors that augment HIV risk and vulnerability for Black communities and inform policy and practice in Ontario, Canada, regarding HIV prevention and care for Black people. Knowledge translation (KT) was integrated throughout the research process as a core component of the study. METHODS: Adhering to the principles of self-determination and autonomy in com

Empathic Communication in Pediatric Palliative Care: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Effective communication between healthcare providers and parents facing their child's end of life is critical yet complex. A comprehensive synthesis of how empathic communication influences clinical and bereavement outcomes in pediatric palliative care is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize qualitative and quantitative evidence on parent-provider empathic communication in pediatric palliative care and to develop an integrative theoretical-conceptual model explaining its proposed mediating role in symptom management and family bereavement. METHODS: A mixed-methods systematic review

Nationwide spread of multidrug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae across US communities.

Traditionally viewed as a hospital pathogen, multidrug-resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae is emerging in community settings, yet its population structure and spread are currently undefined. A nationwide genomic survey of 2006 ceftriaxone-nonsusceptible outpatient isolates from 42 US states reveals that the spread of resistance is primarily driven by the blaCTX-M-15 extended-spectrum-β-lactamase (ESBL) gene across diverse K. pneumoniae lineages. This gene, harbored by a family of IncFIB(Kpn3) plasmids, has spread to hundreds of lineages, coupling antibiotic resistance with stress- and metal-

AllTheBacteria: a community resource empowers biology and discovers novel peptide antibiotics.

Public microbial genomes encode an immense record of biological diversity, evolution and molecular function, but much of this information remains difficult to reuse because raw sequencing data are not uniformly assembled, quality controlled, annotated or searchable at scale. Here we present AllTheBacteria, an open, community-built resource that transforms public bacterial short-read whole-genome sequencing reads into a uniformly processed discovery platform. The current analysed release contains 2,440,377 high-quality bacterial and archaeal genomes from 11,273 species, together with standardiz

Community empowerment through technology-enabled health education for tuberculosis control.

Tuberculosis is one of the major infectious diseases that result in a significant morbidity and mortality, especially in the resource-limited communities with a lack of health literacy that hinders the early detection and the compliance with the treatment. Health education through technology is an up-and-coming method of bettering community empowerment in the TB control programs. In this paper, the researcher compared the robustness of a holistic technology-based health education framework using interventions of mobile applications, interactive voice response systems, and digital kiosks in com

Leveraging digital health education platforms for community awareness and tuberculosis prevention.

This study evaluates whether a digital tuberculosis (TB) education platform is associated with more timely TB screening during a community rollout. Evidence from real-world deployment on short-term TB prevention behaviors remains limited. A prospective stepped-wedge rollout across community clusters compared TB screening uptake within 90 days after first platform exposure with earlier periods under standard outreach. Screening completion was taken from community registers when available, and from surveys when register linkage was not available. In a period-adjusted mixed effects model that acc

Effectiveness of e-learning modules in community-based tuberculosis awareness programs.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem in India, which reported about a quarter of the world's TB cases in 2023. Awareness programs are vital for early diagnosis and treatment, yet reaching rural populations in states like Bihar is challenging because of low digital literacy, poor internet coverage and a reliance on shared devices. This intervention study compared facilitator-supported e-learning modules with a more informal mobile-based education approach to assess which method better improves community TB knowledge. Adults from rural and semi-urban Bihar were assigned at the

[Connotation of acupoints based on CHENG Dan'an's "viscera-skin communication theory"].

CHENG Dan'an, the founder of modern acupuncture and moxibustion, proposed the "viscera-skin communication theory" in 1933 and conducted a series of studies and interpretations based on this theory. Focusing on "viscera-skin communication theory", the authors elucidated the core concepts of this theory, revealed the similarities and differences in the intrinsic connections of acupoints with viscera and body surface. The authors proposed a theoretical hypothesis that the essence of acupoints refers to "functional nodes where visceral and cutaneous information converge and exchange", encompassing

The Ethno-Sexual Hyphen: Communicating Gay-Mizrahi Subjectivity in Israeli Workplaces.

This study examines how gay-Mizrahi men in Israel navigate the communicative processes through which workplace subjectivities are constructed, negotiated, and legitimized. Mizrahiness refers to a Jewish ethno-cultural position associated with Middle Eastern and North African ancestry, historically shaped by unequal relations with Ashkenazi hegemony and intersecting class, geographic, cultural, and gendered hierarchies. Based on semi-structured interviews with self-identified gay-Mizrahi men across diverse occupational sectors, this study examines how sexuality, ethnicity and professionalism ar

Resilient Communities: The Role of Biofilms in Salmonella enterica Ecology, Persistence and Pathogenesis.

Salmonella enterica is a major global foodborne pathogen whose success across environmental, agricultural and host-associated niches is closely linked to its ability to form biofilms. Importantly, biofilm formation capacity varies substantially among S. enterica serovars, with broad-host-range serovars such as Salmonella typhimurium and Salmonella enteritidis typically exhibiting robust curli- and cellulose-based biofilms, while host-restricted serovars and recently evolved invasive lineages may display reduced or altered biofilm phenotypes. In this review, we synthesise current knowledge on t

Deciphering wine fermentation through microbiota transplantation and synthetic yeast communities.

Microbial communities play a central role in fermentation dynamics and in wine quality, by driving the fermentation process and shaping the sensory and chemical profiles of wine. Consequently, although considerable attention has been given to inoculation strategies, including commercial starter cultures, pied-de-cuve, and spontaneous fermentation, the impact of transplanting an entire microbial community independently of its original matrix has not yet been evaluated. This study compared grape berry surface microbiota transplantation by berry rinsing with the traditional pied-de-cuve approach,

CFAST: a simplified and culturally adapted stroke education tool for Chinese communities.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Rapid recognition of stroke symptoms in Chinese populations is poor, and improving the timely and reliable identification of patients could significantly expedite the administration of stroke therapy. This study aimed to develop and evaluate CFAST ("Zhongfeng, shuo-xiao-dong" meaning "stroke, speech, smile, move"), compare its learning efficiency, comprehension, and 1-h recall with Stroke-120, and validate its performance in a larger pragmatic cohort. METHODS: Phase 1 involved a comparison of standardized community sessions using CFAST (n = 192) or Stroke-120 (n = 192).

[Intercultural Communication with Patients in Hospital Settings - From Misunderstanding to Mutual Understanding].

Culturally diverse constellations in European hospital settings have become increasingly common, giving rise to communication challenges that affect both patient safety and the quality of care. This article examines the key dimensions of intercultural communication between physicians and patients, with particular focus on verbal and nonverbal communication, direct versus indirect communication styles, and the types of conflict that frequently arise in multicultural clinical environments. Drawing on established frameworks - including Watzlawick's communication theory and Hofstede's cultural dim

Effect of Clinicians' Empathetic Communication on Anxiety: A Randomized Video Vignette Study.

CONTEXT: Empathetic communication is a core component of serious illness conversations. The NURSE statement (Name, Understand, Respect, Support, Explore) is widely used to respond to emotion, but its independent effect on anxiety and the role of cultural adaptation remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether empathetic communication using the NURSE framework mitigates the anxiety-provoking effect of difficult news and improves satisfaction among patients with serious illness and their family members, and to compare culturally adapted and non-adapted versions. METHODS: We conducted a rand

Restorative justice and the role of community in All Your Faces: a film analysis.

This article examines the representation of community within restorative justice (RJ) in the French film All Your Faces (Je verrai toujours vos visages, 2023), addressing central debates within RJ scholarship concerning the meaning, place, and function of community in restorative processes. By analysing the film's verbal and visual dimensions, the article examines how community is represented and enacted through relationships, interactions, spatial arrangements, and restorative practices. The analysis identifies three forms of community: prison as a space in which multiple communities intersec
