The volumes of the right and left ventricles were measured in 78 patients with first acute transmural myocardial infarction at days 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 of the disease. The feasibility and safety of transvenous closure of atrial septal defects by a new device was tested in 20 piglets, in which atrial septal defects were created by foramen ovale dilatation with angioplasty balloons. Eighty-six fetuses of 21-41 weeks' gestation with arrhythmias were studied with ultrasound and heart rate monitoring. The type of arrhythmia was identified by M-mode studies and was confirmed by postnatal electrocardiogram in 70 infants. Fourteen patients with transmural acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were treated with intravenous streptokinase a mean of 4 +/- 1 hours after chest pain and underwent technetium-99m stannous pyrophosphate (Tc-99m-PPi) imaging 7 +/- 2 hours after the onset of chest pain. Regurgitant flows in valvular diseases were evaluated by a pulsed Doppler flowmeter combined with an electronic beam sector scanning echocardiograph. Radionuclide angiocardiography provides a noninvasive assessment of cardiac function and blood flow through the heart and lungs.
