Mucormycosis is caused principally by members of the genus Rhizopus, especially R arrhizus and R. oryzae. Infection attributable to R. rhizopodiformis has rarely been documented. The children of untreated phenylketonuric women have a significantly higher mortality and morbidity than average. The success of neonatal screening for phenylketonuria (PKU) means that an increasing number of healthy intelligent women with PKU are reaching childbearing age and will create a new therapeutic problem for physicians and obstetricians in the next decade. To identify the times of emergence of the permanent teeth of Canadian Eskimos (Inuit), 368 children and adolescents were examined. The presence or absence of all permanent teeth except the third molars was recorded and these data subjected to probit analysis. Female emergence times were advanced over males. A certain number of drunk patients who suffered hand injury were not prone to operation on the day of admission, as usual, for different reasons (behaviour of the patient etc.). These patients were treated on the delayed urgency principle, that Iselin worked out. Results in the 266 cases were surprisingly good. There were much less complications with this method, compared to previous results achieved when primary treatment of wounds was practised. Yet more experience is necessary, to work out certain details and more exact indications, the authors state.

Diagnosis of zygomatic fractures in the emergency department is possible by history and clinical signs together with a routine series of facial bone x-ray films. Splenectomies were performed in 30 children out of a total of 183 with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Of these 30, ten splenectomies were performed on an emergency basis. Significant spontaneous gross hematuria, gastrointestinal bleeding or epistaxis appear to represent harbingers of intracranial hemorrhage and constitute indications for emergency splenectomy.

Seven cases with the diagnosis of supraventricular paroxysmal tachycardia, confirmed by the electrocardiogram were included in the study. Their ages fluctuated from 19 days to 14 years, with predominance of small infants. The etiology was varied. They were managed with digitalis and conversion to sinusal rhythm in a short term. The drug was maintained to prevent relapses and/or heart failure. No mortality issued. During the last 12 years 7 patients with ulcerative colitis were treated because of an acute complication consisting in 2 cases of colonic perforation, 3 cases of toxic megacolon (two of them perforated) and 2 cases of massive enterorragia.
