INTRODUCTION: The deep fibular sensory nerve can be recorded to evaluate for peripheral nerve injury; however, it can be challenging in some individuals. Anatomic variation could account for some of this difficulty. Cadaver dissection and electrophysiological testing were used to characterize deep and superficial fibular sensory nerve supply to the foot.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen feet from 15 (8 males and 7 females) cadavers were dissected to identify the deep fibular nerves (DFNs) and superficial fibular nerves (SFNs). Sensation to the first dorsal web space was tested electrophysiolog…

Flatfoot is a common foot deformity, which could contribute to running injuries such as medial tibial stress syndrome. Intrafoot kinematics of flatfoot during walking have often been documented using multisegment foot models. However, the intrafoot kinematics of flatfoot during running remains unclear, despite the possible relationship between flatfoot and running injuries. We aimed to clarify rearfoot, midfoot, and forefoot kinematics when running in participants with normal foot and flatfoot. Participants with the normal foot (n = 14) and flatfoot (n = 14) were asked to runover-ground at the…

The peptide AVFQHNCQE demonstrated to produce nitric oxide-mediated antihypertensive effect. This study investigates the bioavailability and the opioid-like activity of this peptide after its oral administration. For this purpose, in silico and in vitro approaches were used to study the peptide susceptibility to GI digestion. In addition, AVFQHNCQE absorption was studied both in vitro by using Caco-2 cell monolayers and in vivo evaluating peptide presence in plasma from Wistar rats by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) and by ultra-high performa

BACKGROUND: Although pilon fractures are uncommon, they are of importance to orthopaedic surgeons because of the difficulty of treatment. Poor outcomes and high complication rates are seen despite various surgical methods. This study aims to examine the changes affecting the quality of life and foot functions in patients applied with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for a pilon fracture.
METHODS: In this study, a total of 45 patients treated with ORIF for a pilon fracture in our clinic between January 2010 and December 2016 were evaluated with AOFAS and SF-12 in a total of 10 categ…

Biomechanical changes caused by structural foot deformities predispose patients to plantar ulceration. Plantar ulcer recurrence often leads to osteomyelitis, which is more commonly observed in patients with diabetes. Once the infection of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) spreads and is complicated by osteomyelitis, treatment becomes more complicated and difficult. Osteomyelitis treatment remains challenging because of low drug concentration within the tissue caused by poor circulation and inadequate localized nutrition. Moreover, tissues around plantar ulcers are fewer and are thin, making the format…

In recent years, as living standards have continued to improve, the number of diabetes patients in China, along with the incidence of complications associated with the disease, has been increasing. Among these complications, diabetic foot disease is one of the main causes of disability and death in diabetic patients. Due to the differences in economy, culture, religion and level of medical care available across different regions, preventive and treatment methods and curative results for diabetic foot vary greatly. In multidisciplinary models built around diabetic foot, the timely assessment an…

BACKGROUND: Although injection drug use (IDU) is a known risk factor for septic arthritis (SA) of the foot and ankle (F&A), disease and hospitalization outcomes are poorly characterized. We evaluated national trends, demographic characteristics, and hospitalization outcomes of SA of the F&A in people who inject drugs vs those who do not.
METHODS: Using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, we identified all patients aged 15-64 with a principal discharge diagnosis of SA of the F&A from 2000 to 2013 and evaluated if they were related or unrelated to IDU. We assessed differences in demographic charac…

INTRODUCTION: Patients with haemophilia (PwH) often prefer shod walking over barefoot walking as footwear offers ankle joint stability and comfort during gait. Yet, the biomechanical mechanisms contributing to the latter remain poorly understood.
AIM: To explore the effect of shoes on the biomechanical functioning of the ankle and foot complex in PwH with and without haemophilic ankle arthropathy and to determine the amount of ankle joint loading during shod walking.
METHODS: We analysed data of PwH without haemophilic ankle arthropathy (n = 5) and PwH with severe haemophilic ankle arthropat…

Peromyscus leucopus (the white-footed mouse) is a known reservoir of the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. Sampling of white-footed mice allows for year-round B. burgdorferi surveillance as well as opportunities to establish the diversity of the different variants in a geographic region. This study explores the prevalence of B. burgdorferi infections in the tissues of white-footed mice, investigates the correlations between B. burgdorferi infected tissues, and determines the optimum field methods for surveillance of B. burgdorferi in P. leucopus. A total of 90 mice and 573 tissues …

Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is capable of infecting all cloven-hoofed domestic livestock species, including cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep. However, in contrast to cattle and pigs, the pathogenesis of FMDV in small ruminants has been incompletely elucidated. The objective of the current investigation was to characterize tissue- and cellular tropism of early and late stages of FMDV infection in sheep following three different routes of simulated natural virus exposure. Extensive post-mortem harvest of tissue samples at pre-determined time points during early infection (24 and 48 hours p…

OBJECTIVE: Increasing Wound, Ischemia, and foot Infection (WIfI) stage has previously been shown to be associated with prolonged wound healing time, higher number of surgical procedures, and increased cost of care in patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) treated in a multidisciplinary setting. However, the profitability of this care model is unknown. We aimed to quantify the hospital costs and net margins associated with multidisciplinary DFU care.
METHODS: All patients presenting to our multidisciplinary diabetic limb preservation service (January 2012-June 2016) were enrolled in a prosp…
