Features of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in brains of patients with familial dementia of Alzheimer type.

Necropsy findings consistent with spongiform encephalopathy of the Creutzfeldt-Jakob type are described in the brain of a 48-year-old woman whose prolonged course and clinical features had suggested Alzheimer's presenile dementia. Six other members of her family in two generations have also died of progressive presenile dementing illnesses of Alzheimer type, lasting 5-10 years. Autopsies showed a post-viral temporal lobe encephalopathy in one and spongiform (C-J) lesions in another. Neuropathological studies in this family add weight to the idea that Alzheimer's disease and Creutzfeldt-Jakob d

Cells of origin and terminal distribution of corticostriatal fibers arising in the sensory-motor cortex of monkeys.

The cells of origin of the corticostriatal projection have been identified in squirrel monkeys by the use of the retrograde horseradish peroxidase method. In the subfields of the somatic sensory, motor, parietal and frontal areas of the cortex, cells projecting to the ipsilateral striatum are relatively sparsely distributed and form a group of small- to medium-sized pyramidal cells with an average somal diameter from area to area of 14-16 mum. Such cells are found only in layer V of the cortex (mainly in the more superficial parts of the layer). Since they are consistently smaller than the pyr

The impact of age-related hearing loss on structural neuroanatomy: A meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis investigated the association between age-related hearing loss and structural neuroanatomy, specifically changes to gray matter volume. Hearing loss is associated with increased risk of cognitive decline. Hence, understanding the effects of hearing loss in older age on brain health is essential. We reviewed studies which compared older participants with hearing loss (age-related hearing loss: ARHL) to older adults without clinical hearing loss (no-ARHL), on neuroanatomical outcomes, specifically gray matter (GM) volume as measured by magnetic resonance imaging. A total of fiv

Predictors of long-term memory and network connectivity 10 years after anterior temporal lobe resection.

OBJECTIVE: Anterior temporal lobe resection (ATLR) effectively controls seizures in medically refractory temporal lobe epilepsy but risks significant episodic memory decline. Beyond 1 year postoperatively, the influence of preoperative clinical factors on episodic memory and long-term network plasticity remain underexplored. Ten years post-ATLR, we aimed to determine biomarkers of successful memory network reorganization and establish presurgical features' lasting impact on memory function. METHODS: Twenty-five ATLR patients (12 left-sided) and 10 healthy controls underwent a memory-encoding

Relationships of inflammation trajectories with white matter volume and integrity in midlife.

OBJECTIVE: Elevated inflammation is associated with worse late-life cognitive functioning and brain health. Our goal was to examine the relationship between inflammation trajectories and white matter integrity in midlife. METHODS: Participants were 508 adults from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study (CARDIA; 51% female). Latent class analysis was used to identify inflammation trajectories based on repeated measures of the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) over the 18 years before brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Outcomes were brain MRI measures of tota

Human motor memory retention requires fronto-parietal circuit plasticity.

Recent studies in human motor learning have documented the involvement of higher-order somatosensory regions, specifically the rostral parietal cortex (rPC), in learning and retention, with limited participation of primary motor cortex (M1). The absence of M1 involvement suggests the recruitment of alternative frontal regions to support learning. The dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) is a primary candidate given its role in movement planning and its anatomical connectivity with rPC. However, the functional contribution of PMd to retention and the nature of its interaction with the parietal cortex-w

Frontoparietal Hub Connectivity Integrates Information from Multiple Sources.

Frontoparietal connector hubs are thought to support information integration across the brain, but this role has largely been inferred from static connectivity, leaving unclear how computational processes shape inter-regional connectivity during behavior. Here, we address this question using a model-based functional connectivity approach in human fMRI data. Thirty-eight participants (males and females) performed a task requiring the integration of sensory evidence with an internally maintained state belief to guide behavior. We developed a computational model that combines these information so

Frontal and temporal hyper-perfusion in Parkinson's disease with subjective cognitive decline.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease with subjective cognitive decline (PD-SCD), defined as self-perceived cognitive decline in the absence of objective impairment, is associated with an increased risk of progression to mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) and dementia. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) imaging may provide insight into functional alterations preceding measurable cognitive decline. OBJECTIVE: To characterize regional CBF patterns in PD-SCD and compare them with those in PD with normal cognition (PD-NC) and PD-MCI. METHODS: A total of 140 patients with PD were classified as PD-NC (n = 32), P

Life experiences of humiliation, entrapment, and frontoparietal-cerebellar connectivity predict adolescent anxiety and depression symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to major life stressors and aberrant brain functioning have been related to anxiety and depression in adolescence. However, whether these associations differ based on the specific characteristics of the stressors and/or brain functional networks remains unclear. METHODS: In a longitudinal sample of adolescents enriched for anxiety and depressive disorders, we examined cumulative lifetime stressor frequency and severity of five stressor characteristics: physical danger, interpersonal loss, humiliation, entrapment, and role change/disruption. Anxiety and depression symptoms

Contribution of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors to bottom-up amplification of frontal and parietal cortical responses to rare deviant tones in rats.

We previously reported "true" deviance detection in rat frontal and parietal cortex, reflected in amplified evoked frontal and parietal local field potential (eLFP) responses to rare deviant tones, a likely neural mechanism of bottom-up auditory attention. These amplified cortical responses could not be accounted for by stimulus-specific adaptation (SSA) mechanisms alone, implying that they reflect prediction errors calculated by comparing stored expectations to current stimuli. The cholinergic system is well-known to be involved in attention, but the contributions of different acetylcholine r

Site- and frequency-specific enhancement of visual search performance with online individual alpha frequency (IAF) repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the inferior frontal junction.

In this study, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation was applied to either the right inferior frontal junction or the right inferior parietal cortex during a difficult aerial reconnaissance search task to test its capacity to improve search performance. Two stimulation strategies previously found to enhance cognitive performance were tested: The first is called "addition by subtraction," and the second condition utilizes a direct excitatory approach by applying brief trains of high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation immediately before task trials.
