Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2004eng
Studies of the management of osteoporosis in older women who have had hip or wrist fractures have found underdiagnosis and undertreatment of the disease. Few such studies have been conducted in the United States, however, and most studies have been confined to a subset of the treatments currently available to treat osteoporosis. Mail surveys were sent to 381 women between 50 and 84 years of age who had been treated for a hip or wrist fracture at a large northeast US teaching hospital between October 1, 1998, and September 30, 2000. These surveys included questions about osteoporosis risk facto

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2001eng
Health-related quality of life (HRQL) was examined in relation to prevalent fractures in 4816 community-dwelling Canadian men and women 50 years and older participating in the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study (CaMos). Fractures were of three categories: clinically recognized main fractures, subclinical vertebral fractures and fractures at other sites. Main fractures were divided and analyzed at the hip, spine, wrist/forearm, pelvis and rib sites. Baseline assessments of anthropometric data, medical history, therapeutic drug use, spinal radiographs and prevalent fractures were obtained f

In a population sample health survey, body mass, previous trauma and physical stress were studied for associations with coxarthrosis. A sample of 8,000 persons representative of the Finnish population aged 30 or over was invited for examination, and 90 percent participated. On the basis of a standardized clinical examination, a physician diagnosed coxarthrosis in 6 percent of the women and 4 percent of the men. The prevalence rose with age. In persons with a past traumatic lower-limb injury, the odds ratio of unilateral coxarthrosis was 2.1 and of bilateral coxarthrosis 1.5, as adjusted for se

BACKGROUND: The global COVID-19 pandemic led to excess mortality, especially for vulnerable older patients with simultaneous comorbidities. Patients with proximal femoral fractures already have a high mortality risk of up to 30% during the first postoperative year. The purpose of this study was not only to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on the mortality of patients tested positive but also of negatively tested patients with proximal femoral fractures.
METHODS: A single center cohort study of 2186 patients (mean age 79.8 years) who were surgically treated for a proximal femoral fracture at

BACKGROUND: Surgeons may be hesitant to perform reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) in elderly patients due to medical complexity, frailty, and possibility of higher rates of complications and mortality. Credence is given to this notion by reports from the hip and knee arthroplasty literature, which show higher rates of postoperative complications and mortality in elderly patients. As such, the purpose of the current study is to analyze outcomes and complications following rTSA in patients ≥90 years old.
METHODS: All patients ≥90 years old who underwent primary rTSA from 2010 to 2024 w

BACKGROUND: Snapping biceps femoris syndrome (SFS) represents a rare clinical entity in which the biceps femoris subluxates over the fibular head in deep flexion. Two primary pathophysiologies have been described including a prominent or abnormal fibular head morphology. Others have implicated an anomalous biceps femoris insertion. The diagnosis is made clinically, with operative and nonoperative intervention strategies available for treatment.
INDICATIONS: SFS often results in audible snapping and associated pain at the lateral fibular head. When recalcitrant to nonoperative management, surg

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of various factors, in particular operation time, on mortality and complication rates in patients with femoral neck fractures who have undergone hip hemiarthroplasty (HHA) and to determine a cut-off value above which mortality and complication rates increase significantly.
METHODS: Cases of patients with femoral neck fracture treated with HHA between 1 January 2017 and 31 December 2023 were screened for eligibility. Multiple logistic regressions were calculated to determine which factors (patient age, experience of surg

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia and frailty often worsen in older adults because of declines in activities of daily living and social connections that are associated with chronic diseases and traumatic injuries such as falls and fractures. Exercise intervention for sarcopenia can take >3 months to improve muscle mass, muscle strength, and walking speed. Thus, a specialized intervention system for shorter periods of time is needed. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the short-term efficacy of an exercise program using the wearable cyborg Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) lumbar type in physical function in m

BACKGROUND: Global prevalence of osteoporosis and fragility fractures is increasing due to the aging population. Proximal femoral fractures are among the most common orthopedic conditions in elderly that significantly cause health deterioration and mortality. Here, we aimed to evaluate the mortality rates and risk factors, besides the functional outcomes after these injuries.
METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, all patients admitted with a femoral neck or intertrochanteric fracture between 2016 and the end of 2018 were enrolled in this study. Medical records were reviewed to include pat

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of extra-articular mid and distal tibia fractures has primarily focused on reducing rates of non-union and malunion, preserving hip-knee-ankle alignment and improving functional outcomes. Fibular fractures commonly accompany these injuries and the contributory role of fixation of these fractures has been increasingly studied. A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to determine whether concurrent fibular fixation (FF) during extra-articular mid and distal tibia fracture fixation (AO/OTA 42 and 43-A) altered the risk of malunion, non-union and po

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic/acetabular fractures are associated with significant morbidity, mortality and cost to the society. We sought to utilize a national surgical database to assess the incidence and factors associated with prolonged length of stay (LOS), non-home discharge destination, 30-day adverse events and readmissions following surgical fixation of pelvic/acetabular fractures.
MATERIALS & METHODS: The 2011-2016 ACS-NSQIP database files were queried using CPT codes (27215, 27217, 27218, 27226, 27227, 27228) for patients undergoing open reduction/internal fixation (ORIF) for pelvic/acetabu

BACKGROUND: Postoperative hyperglycemia related to stress has been shown to be an independent risk factor for periprosthetic joint infection. In a non-intensive care, general-surgery setting, a standardized postoperative insulin protocol has been shown to decrease the rate of wound infections. We hypothesized that the use of a similar protocol is both safe and effective for controlling hyperglycemia in patients who have undergone total joint replacement.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 489 consecutive patients who underwent primary or revision total hip or knee arthropla

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Fractures of femoral neck in children are rare skeletal injuries which are, however, associated with a high percentage of complications. The aim of the retrospective study is to evaluate a group of patients in relation to the incidence of individual complications and demonstrate the methods used for the solution of these complications.
MATERIAL: Twenty patients with fractures of femoral neck (average age 10 years 5 months) were treated at the Department of the authors in the period between 1983 and 1997. Of this 18 patients were operated on (most frequently used was inte

BACKGROUND: Implant choice for the fixation of femoral neck fracture is one of the most important management controversies. This study aims to evaluate and compare the short-term outcomes associated with the use of the Femoral Neck System (FNS), Multiple Cancellous Screws (MCS), and Dynamic Hip Screws (DHS) in treating femoral neck fractures in a young patient population.
METHODS: From June 2018 to June 2021, a total of 120 surgeries for a primary femoral neck fracture were retrospectively analyzed. This review encompassed demographic details of the patients and the mechanisms behind the inju

BACKGROUND: The knee is the second-most common location for osteonecrosis, although it is affected much less often than the hip. Core decompression by precise drilling into ischemic lesions of the femoral condyle while remaining extra-articular is a challenge, particularly in obese patients. For cell therapy, exact localization of the injection point is important to avoid intra-articular injection.
METHODS: The precision of drilling with computer-based navigation was compared to that of conventional fluoroscopy-based drilling. A prospective, randomized study was conducted using both surgical
