To examine the efficacy of a couples treatment approach for promoting recovery from a recently disclosed affair, 89 couples that disclosed an affair by one of the partners in the past 6 months were randomly assigned to treatment (n = 46) or to a control group that waited about 3 months for treatment (n = 43). STUDY SAMPLE: Significant others of members of the Finnish Ménière's Federation.
RESULTS: The predominant responses concerned effects on their lives and lifestyle--participation restrictions (effects on personal and community life)--and on personal contextual factors (uncertainty of life). In contrast they fail to list such effects of the patients, focussing rather on the patients' symptoms. Five percent of the responses given entailed positive experiences.

BACKGROUND: This is the final paper of a series concerning parental maltreatment and chronic depression in women. It extends the scope of the analysis to take account of proximal risk factors, present within at most six months of an onset. It deals with the contribution of factors influencing onset of a depressive episode as well as those related to whether this takes a chronic course. Once a two-stage model dealing with both sets of risk factors has been developed we explore how far distal factors (more than at least one year earlier) influence each stage.

OBJECTIVE: The Childhood Trauma Interview, a new instrument for brief and comprehensive retrospective assessment of childhood interpersonal trauma, is presented with initial evidence of its reliability and validity.
METHOD: Drug- or alcohol-dependent patients (N = 220) were given the Childhood Trauma Interview and a questionnaire measure of child abuse, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Convergent and discriminant validity for the Childhood Trauma Interview were tested by comparing correlations between analogous and nonanalogous trauma scales to those of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire.
