Use of service and treatment adequacy in health students with depression.

INTRODUCTION: Our study aimed to measure the prevalence of service use and adequate treatment in health students and to compare medical, dental and pharmacy specialties. Data for medical students came from a national study conducted during the same period, using the same procedure. We used the Composite International Diagnostic Interview Short-Form (CIDI-SF) questionnaire to evaluate the presence of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in the last year. We asked the subjects if they had consulted hea

How Cognitive Reserve Could Protect from Dementia? An Analysis of Everyday Activities and Social Behaviors During Lifespan.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In the last decade, there has been a notable increase in the prevalence of cognitive decline among the elderly population. This phenomenon is further compounded by the concurrent rise in life expectancy, indicating a growing concern for the health and well-being of individuals in this demographic. Dementia has become a disease with a strong social impact, not exclusively limited to its health dimension. It is generally accepted that lifestyle factors and psychological attitudes toward life challenges may serve as protective mechanisms against pathological cognitive decli

Highlighting the Psychiatric Burden: Depression and Anxiety Drive Poor Quality of Life in Focal Dystonia.

INTRODUCTION: Primary focal dystonias are movement disorders linked to dysfunctions in the basal ganglia, which also play a role in neuropsychiatric conditions. While motor symptoms in dystonia are well-documented, the neuropsychiatric comorbidities associated with these disorders, particularly depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), psychosis and pain, have been little explored. This study aims to assess the prevalence of these psychiatric disorders and their impact on the quality of life (QoL) in patients with cervical dystonia (CD) and oromandibular dystonia (OMD). METHOD

The continuation of non-physical abuse from childhood to adulthood in eating disorder patients: An interpretative phenomenological analysis.

BACKGROUND: The ED literature has focused on the physical forms of childhood abuse with respect to eating disorders, overlooking non-physical abuse even though eating disorder patients report the latter either as primary experiences or as a revival of their childhood experiences. Additionally, there is no literature exploring whether adult eating disorder patients who have experienced childhood non-physical abuse continue to experience abuse as adults, and if they do, how well-being is impacted or linked with eating pathology. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the lived experiences of eating dis

OBJECTIVE: The current investigation identified latent classes of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and differences between these classes after exposure to Hurricane Ike. METHODS: Adults living in Galveston and Chambers County, Texas, (n = 658) completed a battery of measures during an interview conducted two to five m

Associations Between Fatigue and Endocrine and Non-endocrine Health Problems in Turner Syndrome: Cohort Study and Review.

CONTEXT: Turner syndrome (TS) is a rare chromosomal disorder characterized by gonadal dysfunction, short stature, and heart defects, among other features. Women with TS often suffer from severe fatigue, for which they are typically referred to endocrinologists. The diagnostic work-up is generally time-consuming and invasive, and it rarely solves the problem. To prevent the personal and financial burden of unnecessary diagnostic procedures, it is crucial to understand fatigue in TS. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between fatigue and endocrine and non-endocrine comorbidities in a-for rar

Dissociative Identity Disorder in an Adolescent With Nine Alternate Personality Traits: A Case Study.

Since dissociative identity disorder (DID) has symptoms similar to schizophrenia, such as auditory hallucinations and delusional thoughts of being controlled, there are difficulties in its differential diagnosis. A 16-year-old adolescent male patient who was previously diagnosed with schizophrenia from a different hospital was admitted to our inpatient psychiatric unit for the evaluation of auditory hallucinations and suicide attempts. Through psychiatric evaluations, it was determined that the patient suffered from identity alternation, dissociation, and amnesia. As for the diagnostic evaluat

Quality of life in patients with fibromyalgia: Contributions of disease symptoms, lifestyle and multi-medication.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a disease characterized by the presence of chronic and widespread musculoskeletal pain, which causes a high negative impact on the quality of life (QoL). Although there are many studies about the QoL of patients with FM, it is unknown which variables have a main influence on it. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to determine which FM symptoms predict a worse QoL and also to establish whether lifestyle and multi-medication are associated to QoL. We assessed a sample of 134 women with FM using a semi-structured clinical interview to explore lifestyle (diet, exercise,

This case-series exploratory study examines the potential relationships among IPV, mental
