This report about 44 cases of fibular ligament lesions compares the results of two series of 22 cases, one investigated from 1978 to 1981 and the other from 1981 to 1983. Introduction of a special holding device in 1981 has resulted in more objective diagnostics. For assessment of the value of computed tomography (CT) as a method for evaluating the cartilage of the patellofemoral joint, 100 knees were examined in 91 patients. With the patient in a supine position with the knee flexed at a 30 degree angle, a sufficient quantity of air and positive contrast material was required to obtain an accurate CT picture of the cartilage. This investigation evaluated the accuracy of three different transcranial TMJ radiographic records of condylar position and joint space dimension. In addition, the study evaluated how reliably observers determined condylar position and joint space dimensions from the radiographs. Ten patients with unilateral spontaneous swelling of the sternoclavicular joint are presented. Plain radiographic examination of the joints revealed no abnormalities. Technetium scintigraphy was positive. After surgical biopsy the swelling and the symptoms disappeared. Between 1966 and 1981, 812 proximal interphalangeal joints were reconstructed by the senior author using the flexible silicone rubber implant resection arthroplasty method. Within this series, a group of 182 patients with 424 proximal interphalangeal joint implants were available for a detailed clinical and roentgenographic review. In a total of 1980 patients who underwent total hip replacement 0.8% suffered from intra- and postoperative fractures of the femoral shaft. These spontaneous fractures were preconditioned by damage of the cortical layer due to rheumatoid arthritis, aseptic and septic looseening of the prosthesis as well as local trauma. In most cases stability could be restored by plate osteosynthesis, sometimes in combination with change of the prosthesis.

The author analyzes the arthroscopy findings of 70 knee joints in 68 patients (35 men and 33 women) suffering from chronic monoarthritis of the knee joints with a disease standing from 3 months to 12 years. Thirty-six wrists of 35 patients were treated with distal ulnar recession for pain and limitation of motion associated with chondromalacia of the ulnar head, triangular fibrocartilage complex tears, ulnocarpal impingement, and instability of the distal radioulnar joint. The clinical records and radiographs of 45 patients who had undergone replantation of a total hand, or a part thereof, were reviewed in order to determine the prevalence and the type of articular changes occurring distal to the site of anastomoses. In three patients, destructive joint changes were observed, consisting of bony fragmentation, spiculation, and cystic or erosive lesions. These changes, which developed between five and ten months after replantation, are most likely neuropathic or osteonecrotic in pathogenesis.

The resection arthrodesis of the ankle joint is advocated in cases of excessive destruction in combination with extensive painful limitation of motion. The osteosynthesis is performed by an external stabilization with "fixateur externe" or by an internal stabilization with screw or plate. We prefer the internal screw-compression arthrodesis because of a higher interfragmentary compression.

This lateral or medial deviation of the legs in broiler chickens, which has been described by many workers, deserves a specific name such as angular bone deformity or valgus-varus deformity of intertarsal joint, so that it may be separated from other varieties of lameness in broilers.
