Lipoprotein(a) was discovered over 30 years age and it is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular diseases. Among patients with end stage renal failure lipoprotein(a) levels are higher than in general population and being independent of the type of treatment. Cardiovascular diseases are the most important cause of mortality in ESRD patients. Moreover we have interesting information about possibility of influence of Lp(a) serum levels.

PURPOSE: To assess the value of functional magnetic resonance urology for the noninvasive postoperative evaluation of renal transplants.
METHODS: A saturation inversion projection sequence allows the selective imaging of strongly T1 weighted signal from the MR contrast agent. A control slab leads to images comparable to conventional urography which can be acquired as a sequence with four images per minute.
RESULTS: 15 patients with urologic questionable findings after renal transplantation were studied. FMRU revealed in 6 patients normal findings, in 6 moderate dilatation of the renal pelvis

An 83-year-old female diagnosed with small cell carcinoma of the kidney is reported on. The clinical picture was similar to that seen with transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis. Between December 1968 and July 1995, 2372 renal transplant recipients were seen regularly in our outpatient clinic. 154 patients (6.5%) of these subsequently developed a malignant tumor. We report two insulin dependent diabetic patients with a past history of 21 and 30 years complicated with retinopathy, neuropathy and nephropathy with arterial hypertension and kidney failure. Renal ectopia is very rare and its associated pyelonephritis can simulate an appendix mass/ abscess or colonic tumour which may result in needless surgical exploration, as illustrated by our experience with 3 cases reported in this article. A horseshoe kidney, associated with bilateral single system ectopic ureters in a 9-month-old boy, is reported. The right ureteric orifice was located near the midline of a deformed trigone while the grossly dilated left ureter inserted into the posterior urethra. Linkage analysis was performed on 22 Bulgarian families with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) ascertained through the hemodialysis centers of two medical schools. A total of 128 affected and 59 unaffected individuals, and 54 spouses have been investigated using eight polymorphic markers linked to PKD1 and nine markers to PKD2.
