Case of hidden tooth: mesiodens fortuitously discovered on a cone-beam CT examination.

Mesiodens is the most common type of supernumerary tooth, located between the maxillary central incisors. A young man was referred by his orthodontist for management of a supernumerary tooth located in quadrant I, superposed to the bottom of the right maxillary sinus, distally orientated with the crown in contact with the apex of the palatal root of the maxillary first molar. The tooth was found on a panoramic radiography before starting his orthodontic treatment. To remove it and in order to study, its relationship to the anatomical structures a cone-beam CT examination was performed. This re…

Development of a new critical size defect model in the paranasal sinus and first approach for defect reconstruction-An in vivo maxillary bone defect study in sheep.

Fractures of the paranasal sinuses often require surgical intervention. Persisting bone defects lead to permanent visible deformities of the facial contours. Bone substitutes for reconstruction of defects with simultaneous induction of new bone formation are not commercially available for the paranasal sinus. New materials are urgently needed and have to be tested in their future area of application. For this purpose critical size defect models for the paranasal sinus have to be developed. A ≥2.4 cm large bilateral circular defect was created in the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus in six …

Posterior Mandibular Segmental Split Osteotomy: A Novel Technique for Edentulous Space Reconstruction in Patients With Skeletal Class III Malocclusion.

This study presents an innovative surgery that successfully improved the facial profile and occlusal function of a patient with a skeletal Class III malocclusion and posterior hypodontia. The patient had chief complaints of missing teeth and a protrudedjaw. A novel 1-stage surgery referred to as posterior mandibular segmental split osteotomy combined with Le Fort i osteotomy and BSSRO was used because the patient wanted to save time and was worried about periodontal complications associated with other treatment methods. As a result, a satisfying facial profile and a Class I occlusion with a no

Comparison of zygoma plates and infrazygomatic crest miniscrews used open bite treatment: A 3-dimensional finite element study.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate infrazygomatic crest (IZC) miniscrews, which represent a new approach to maxillary posterior tooth intrusion and extra-alveolar skeletal anchorage, using 3-dimensional finite element stress analysis to predict the clinical usability instead of zygoma plates. METHODS: Six different models were developed. The direction of the intrusion force was generated parallel to the maxillary first molar, and the posterior bite-block intrusion appliance was connected with 2 steel arches. A zygoma plate, stainless steel (SS)-IZC miniscrew, and a titanium alloy (TiA…

Floating norms for individualising the ANB angle and the WITS appraisal in orthodontic cephalometric analysis based on guiding variables.

PURPOSE: The sagittal skeletal relationship of maxilla and mandible (skeletal class) can generally be determined via lateral cephalograms (ANB angle or Wits appraisal) by comparing measurements to empirical norms based on the respective population mean. However, values differing from these empirical norms also enable a therapeutically desired, normal class I occlusion depending on individual craniofacial pattern, thus requiring floating norms based on guiding variables. As available regression equations consider only few predictor variables and are not up-to-date regarding a contemporary patie…

Intraoral anastomosis in maxillary microvascular reconstruction after oncological excision.

Microvascular anastomosis using an intraoral approach can avoid unnecessary external incisions thus improving patient satisfaction. Furthermore, in case of short pedicle flaps, the lack of proximity of the recipient vessels can be a problem in microvascular reconstruction of the midface. We present our experience in six patients treated for tumours affecting the midface and reconstructed with microvascular flaps through anastomosis to the intraoral aspect of the facial vessels, with the aim of reviewing the use of this technique. Our results showed that intraoral anastomosis is a feasible tech
