The morphological features of a functional parathyroid carcinoma in a 34-year-old female are presented. The case was unique in the high frequency of mitotic figures permitting a tentative diagnosis of malignancy already on frozen sections. Three cases of myocardial fibre calcification found at post-mortem examination are described. In one case there was antemortem hypercalcaemia and hyperphosphataemia and the case was clearly an example of metastatic calcification. Two kinds of spirochetes were observed by dark-field microscopy in the urine of a leptospirosis patient on day 26 after the onset of the disease. A case of gangliocytic paraganglioma of the duodenum, the 25th in world medical literature, is reported. The histologic appearance consists of epithelioid cell nests resembling "Zellballen" of carotid body tumors, together with gangliocyte-like elements. Ultramicroscopically, the cytoplasm of the cells contains round electron-dense granules or a large number of filaments. Occasional cells contain both granules and filaments.

Just prior to the emergence of the tooth into the oral cavity, a small circular crater forms in the gingival epithelium immediately above the crown. The craters appear to expand in diameter during eruption to accommodate the emerging crown of the tooth. The observations support the concept that the crown of the tooth does not actively push through and rupture the gingival epithelium, but rather that the epithelium degenerates and then the tip of the crown emerges into the formed defect.

An inflammatory reaction with the general characteristics of a chronic granuloma surrounding Taenia solium larvae in pig muscle is described. Larvae with an inflammatory capsule were obtained at slaughter from pigs 6-8 months-of-age and were processed for light and electron microscopy. A patient with clinical and histologic features of epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica-recessive (EBD-R) developed superimposed clinical lesions of pityriasis rosea (PR). Electron microscopy showed distinct "blebbing" of basal cells at the basement membrane zone in clinically normal skin of a non-predilected area, as well as in scarred skin from a predilected area and a lesion of PR. An increased susceptibility of the basement membrane zone to proteolytic enzymes is suggested as a possible hypothesis to explain these observations.

Two cases of adenomas of adrenal cortex were examined. Both cases presented clinical symptoms of autonomic hyperaldosteronism. Histologically one adenoma had a benign structure, the other a malignant one. An ultrastructural and cytochemical assay of the benign form suggests that it is composed of so called "hybrid cells". Histochemically the cells of both adenomas were characterized by a 3-beta hydroxysteroid and succinic dehydrogenase reaction, the presence of MAO and nonspecific esterases and in some single cells 17-beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase.

Complex carbohydrate in granules of monocytes was compared with that in granules of neutrophils by ultrastructural cytochemical methods.
