Tics and Tourette syndrome in autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are more frequently associated with tic disorders than expected by chance. Variable rates of comorbidity have been reported and common genetic and neurobiological factors are probably involved. The aim of this study was to determine the rate of tic disorders in a clinical sample (n = 105) of children and adolescents with ASDs and to describe the clinical characteristics of a group with comorbid ASDs and tics (n = 24). The overlap between tics and other repetitive movements and behaviors in ASDs was carefully assessed. Among individuals with ASDs, 22 percent pre

Brain oscillations and sleep microarchitecture: From EEG to fMRI.

This chapter covers the role of brain oscillations in shaping the microarchitecture of sleep and their role in physiological and pathological states. Neural oscillations (delta to gamma frequencies) are fundamental to the structure of sleep stages and play a central role in cognitive and restorative processes of the human brain. This chapter discusses how different oscillatory signatures characterize non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, with slow waves dominating deep sleep and desynchronization in REM sleep. Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic res

Relationship between adjustability of grasping force and upper limb/hand function in individuals with cerebrovascular disorders.

Activities of daily living, including grasping, holding, and pinching, are essential for independence but often become difficult for individuals with cerebrovascular disease owing to upper limb paralysis. We investigated the relationship between adjustability of grasping force (AGF), defined as the ability to adjust grasping force, and upper limb/hand functional performance. Twelve individuals with mild cerebrovascular disorders participated in this preliminary cross-sectional study. Assessments included the AGF task using iWakka, the Fugl-Meyer Assessment, Simple Test for Evaluating Hand Func

Cortical layer 6b mediates state-dependent changes in brain activity and effects of orexin on waking and sleep.

One of the most distinctive features of the mammalian cerebral cortex is its laminar structure. Of all cortical layers, layer 6b (L6b) is by far the least studied, despite exhibiting direct sensitivity to orexin and having widespread connectivity, suggesting an important role in regulating cortical oscillations and brain state. We performed chronic electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings in mice in which a subset of L6b neurons was conditionally 'silenced', during undisturbed conditions, after sleep deprivation (SD), and after intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of orexin. While the tot

Oculomotor disorders and nystagmus.

The precision of visual perception depends on accurately directing the fovea to objects of interest, a process mediated by six supranuclear oculomotor systems that all converge in the brainstem: saccadic and smooth pursuit, vestibular optokinetic, fixation, and vergence. This chapter provides a clinically oriented overview of brainstem neuroanatomy relevant to eye movement control and links it to characterisitic patterns of gaze disturbance. After outlining the organization and functions of the oculomotor (III), trochlear (IV), and abducens (VI) nuclei and their connections via the medial long

Exploring Parakinesia Brachialis Oscitans: An Intriguing Post-Stroke Phenomenon.

Parakinesia Brachialis Oscitans (PBO) is a rare post-stroke phenomenon characterized by abnormal, involuntary movement in a paralyzed limb triggered by yawning. We present the case of a male patient, age 57 years, who was admitted with right hemiparesis, dysarthria, and facial weakness. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed an infarction in the left pons. One week following the stroke, the patient began to experience involuntary elevation of his paretic arm and, to a lesser extent, his leg, triggered specifically by yawning. Based on these observations, he was diagnosed with PBO. The chara

Measurement of leg preference in 7-year-old children: The effect of task characteristics.

The age at which leg preference becomes clearly established in children remains debated, possibly due to inconsistent expression across task types. Leg preference was assessed in 34 right-handed 7-year-olds (53% girls) using a battery of 10 age-appropriate tasks, each performed 10 times with trial independence. Tasks were categorized by bilateral vs. unilateral, movement-leading vs. stabilization, object manipulation, task starting and ending points, and body position. Leg preference was quantified by direction and degree across participants, tasks, and categories, and a general index was comp

A low-cost, open-source device to evaluate limb stiffness in a rabbit model of cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Movement disorders such as cerebral palsy (CP) are frequently associated with joint and muscle stiffness, often evaluated using subjective clinical methods like the Modified Ashworth Scale or Tardieu Scale. These approaches lack precision and reproducibility, particularly in preclinical models, limiting their utility in translational research. METHODS: This study presents the development of a low-cost, open-source torquemeter device tailored for use in a neonatal rabbit model of CP. The device is designed to quantify joint stiffness objectively by measuring torque across a range o…

Case Report of Pediatric HPCA-Associated Dystonia: Analysis of Ca2+ and K+ Channel Dynamics and Experience With Pallidal Deep Brain Stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Biallelic pathogenic variants in the HPCA gene cause HPCA-associated dystonia (DYT-HPCA), a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by generalized dystonia and complex motor symptoms. HPCA encodes hippocalcin, a Ca2+ sensor that modulates neuronal activity through K+ channel activation. Here, we describe the clinical and molecular features of two children with novel HPCA variants and assess the impact of deep brain stimulation (DBS) (globus pallidus internus [Gpi]-DBS) on their movement disorders. METHODS: Two sisters with HPCA variants (c.91_98del/p.Tyr31Leufs14) were eva…

Electromyographic Activity of Cervical Muscles in Patients with Neck Pain and Changes After Dry Needling: A Narrative Review.

Neck pain can be associated with specific conditions, such as neurological disorders, vascular or inflammatory diseases, fractures, herniated discs, etc. However, the majority of neck pain cases cannot be attributed to a specific cause. The objective of this review is to describe the muscle dysfunctions associated with neck pain, as measured by electromyography, and to determine the effectiveness of dry needling in improving these muscular dysfunctions. The research was conducted using the following databases: PubMed, Alcorze, and Google Scholar. The next conclusions have been extracted after

Fluctuations in Upper and Lower Body Movement during Walking in Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus and Parkinson's Disease Assessed by Motion Capture with a Smartphone Application, TDPT-GT.

We aimed to capture the fluctuations in the dynamics of body positions and find the characteristics of them in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) and Parkinson's disease (PD). With the motion-capture application (TDPT-GT) generating 30 Hz coordinates at 27 points on the body, walking in a circle 1 m in diameter was recorded for 23 of iNPH, 23 of PD, and 92 controls. For 128 frames of calculated distances from the navel to the other points, after the Fourier transforms, the slopes (the representatives of fractality) were obtained from the graph plotting the power spec

Motor variability during a repetitive lifting task is impaired by wearing a passive back-support exoskeleton.

PURPOSE: Evaluate whether wearing a passive back-support exoskeleton during repetitive lifting impairs motor variability of erector spinae muscle and spine movement and whether this association is influenced by lifting style. SCOPE: Thirty-six healthy males performed ten lifts in four randomized conditions with exoskeleton (without, with) and lifting style (squat, stoop) as dependent variables. One lifting cycle contained four phases: bending/straighten without/with load. Erector spinae muscular activity, thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis were measured with surface electromyography and gr
