A survey on the usage of decellularized tissues in orthopaedic clinical trials.

Orthopaedic surgery requires grafts with sufficient mechanical strength. For this purpose, decellularized tissue is an available option that lacks the complications of autologous tissue. However, it is not widely used in orthopaedic surgeries. This study investigated clinical trials of the use of decellularized tissue grafts in orthopaedic surgery. Using the ClinicalTrials.gov (CTG) and the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP) databases, we comprehensively surveyed clinical trials of decellularized tissue use in orthopaedic surgeries registered before 1 September 2022. We ev

Activation of the "Splenocardiac Axis" by electronic and tobacco cigarettes in otherwise healthy young adults.

The "Splenocardiac Axis" describes an inflammatory signaling network underlying acute cardiac ischemia, characterized by sympathetic nerve stimulation of hematopoietic tissues, such as the bone marrow and spleen, which then release proinflammatory monocytes that populate atherosclerotic plaques, thereby promoting ischemic heart disease. Electronic (e) cigarettes, like tobacco cigarettes trigger sympathetic nerve activation, but virtually nothing is known about their influence on hematopoietic and vascular tissues and cardiovascular risks. The objective of this study was to determine if the Spl

The mouse tissue plasminogen activator gene 5' flanking region directs appropriate expression in development and a seizure-enhanced response in the CNS.

Tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) is a secreted serine protease implicated in multiple aspects of development. In the adult rat brain, transcription of t-PA is an immediate-early response in the hippocampus following treatments that induce neuronal plasticity. To study the sequence elements that govern transcription of this gene, in situ analysis was used to define t-PA's temporal and spatial expression pattern in midgestation embryos. Transgenic mice were then generated carrying t-PA 5' flanking sequences linked to the E. coli lacZ gene. Constructs containing 4 kb of the flanking sequences

Gray-scale contrast-enhanced ultrasonography for quantitative evaluation of the blood perfusion of the sciatic nerves with crush injury.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Blood perfusion of peripheral nerves plays an important role in regeneration after nerve injury. Functional recovery after a peripheral nerve injury depends not only on the survival of the affected neurons but also on the recovered blood perfusion. Previous studies have shown that it is possible to quantitatively assess blood perfusion of tissue using contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of CEUS for the quantitative evaluation of blood perfusion of the sciatic nerves with crush injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Crush

Anatomic identification and functional outcomes of the nerve sparing Okabayashi radical hysterectomy.

OBJECTIVES: To clarify the anatomy necessary for the nerve sparing Okabayashi's radical hysterectomy, we meticulously separated the blood vessels and connective tissues to preserve the pelvic splanchnic nerve, the hypogastric nerve, and the bladder branch of the inferior hypogastric plexus under magnification (x2.5) during the Okabayashi radical hysterectomy. METHODS: Twenty-four patients (FIGO stage IB, n=22, and stage IIA, n=2) underwent meticulous nerve sparing radical hysterectomy during 2004 to 2006. Postoperative assessment of bladder function consisted of the time to (a) achieve a post

[Results of an operative therapy of dislocated fractures of the humeral head in adults (author's transl)].

Dislocated fractures of the humeral head are problematic injuries. The result of an operative therapy of 30 adult patients are given. Intra- and postoperative complications, advantages and disadvantages are pointed out. Traumatic and posttraumatic damages of the cartilage, partial necrosis of humeral head and the combination with lesions of the soft tissues and nerves are the limits to a good functional result.

Downregulation of CCR2 reduces ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction by splenic nerve neuromodulation in acute and chronic rat models.

OBJECTIVES: Pathological remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI) confers the development of heart failure. Our prior research has indicated that splenic nerve neuromodulation mitigates myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) by reducing levels of proinflammatory factors. This study aims to explore the potential therapeutic benefits of splenic nerve neuromodulation in MI and the underlying mechanism. METHODS: Splenic nerve neuromodulation was performed through electrical splenic nerve stimulation (SpNS). In the acute myocardial IRI model, post-mortem analyses encompassed RNA sequencin

Skin Reinnervation by Collateral Sprouting Following Spared Nerve Injury in Mice.

Following peripheral nerve injury, denervated tissues can be reinnervated via regeneration of injured neurons or collateral sprouting of neighboring uninjured afferents into denervated territory. While there has been substantial focus on mechanisms underlying regeneration, collateral sprouting has received less attention. Here, we used immunohistochemistry and genetic neuronal labeling to define the subtype specificity of sprouting-mediated reinnervation of plantar hindpaw skin in the mouse spared nerve injury (SNI) model, in which productive regeneration cannot occur. Following initial loss o

[Neuroimmunomodulation in the mucosa of the alimentary tract].

Neuropeptides synthetised in the enteric nervous system can change the function of the immunocells and play a role in inflammatory processes. In our review the effects of inflammation on the neuropeptide content of nerves and immune cells were compared. Inflamed tissue samples (human gastritis and animal models with experimental colitis and streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus) were examined. The number and contacts of neuropeptide-containing nerves and immune cells were studied using immunohistochemistry, confocal laser microscopy and electronmicroscopy. In inflammation, the number of sub

STUDY DESIGN: Anatomic study in six formalin-fixed cadavers. OBJECTIVE: To determine the anatomical feasibility of transferring the S2 and S3 ventral roots (VRs) to S1 VR as a method for restoring bladder dysfunction in spinal cord injury. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: A large quantity of researches of neuroanastomosis methods have been used for treating the bladder dysfunction in spinal cord injury. However, some limitations retard the development of those studies. METHODS: In this study, six formalin-fixed cadavers (four males, two females) were dissected. The feasibility of exposing the S1

Ultrasound-Guided Hydroneurolysis of the Median Nerve for Recurrent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome is often associated with perineural scarring around the median nerve. Surgical options include relatively invasive procedures, such as fat pad grafting, ligament reconstruction, muscle transfer, and nerve wraps. All have limited success because of the possibility of repeated recurrent scarring postoperatively. METHODS: We discuss a technique involving injection with external hydroneurolysis of the median nerve under ultrasound guidance for recurrent carpal tunnel. Injection enables a gentler dissection of the surrounding tissues compared with open

Constitutively active PKA regulates neuronal acetylcholine release and contractility of guinea pig urinary bladder smooth muscle.

Autonomic and somatic motor neurons that innervate the urinary bladder and urethra control the highly coordinated functions of the lower urinary tract, the storage, and the emptying of urine. ACh is the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the bladder. Here, we aimed to determine whether PKA regulates neuronal ACh release and related nerve-evoked detrusor smooth muscle (DSM) contractions in the guinea pig urinary bladder. Isometric DSM tension recordings were used to measure spontaneous phasic and electrical field stimulation (EFS)- and carbachol-induced DSM contractions with a combination o

Abnormalities of somatic peptide-containing nerves supplying the pelvic floor of women with genitourinary prolapse and stress urinary incontinence.

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that genital prolapse may be related to peripheral nerve abnormalities, we examined the changes occurring to peptide-containing nerve processes supplying the periurethral muscles in women with stress urinary incontinence associated with prolapse. METHODS: Thirty patients with genital prolapse and 10 age-matched control subjects entered the study. All patients were evaluated by urodynamic investigations. Ten of 30 patients had pure stress urinary incontinence; none of the control subjects was incontinent. During surgery, four biopsy samples were obtained from

Optic nerve transection in monkeys may result in secondary degeneration of retinal ganglion cells.

PURPOSE: Interest in neuroprotection for optic neuropathies is, in part, based on the assumption that retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) die, not only as a result of direct (primary) injury, but also indirectly as a result of negative effects from neighboring dying RGCs (secondary degeneration). This experiment was designed to test whether secondary RGC degeneration occurs after orbital optic nerve injury in monkeys. METHODS: The superior one third of the orbital optic nerve on one side was transected in eight cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). Twelve weeks after the partial transection, th

Möbius syndrome: classification and grading system.

Möbius syndrome is characterized by facial abnormalities, but the limbs, chest wall, spine, and soft tissues also can be involved. There is no system for categorizing the various anomalies, grading phenotypic severity, designing treatment protocols, or assessing therapeutic results. This is a retrospective analysis of 27 patients with Möbius syndrome seen in our craniofacial unit from 1980 to 1994. We categorized and graded the cranial nerve deficits and diverse musculoskeletal abnormalities of the face, upper and lower limbs, and trunk. The first letter for each of five potentially involved s

The effect of indirect injury to peripheral nerves on wound healing after firearm wounds.

This paper reports the pathologic and functional changes of the sciatic nerve indirectly injured by firearms and its effect on wound healing. Twelve dogs were used. Their hind legs were shot with 1.03-gram steel spheres, avoiding direct injury to the sciatic nerve. The experimental animals were divided into two groups according to the impact velocity, that is, a 1,500 m/sec high velocity projectile (HVP) group and a 400 m/sec, low velocity projectile (LVP) group as a control. After wounding, the same procedure was followed in all dogs. At intervals, the tissues of the wound track were excised

Myxoma is not a single entity: a review of the concept of myxoma.

Myxoid lesions can be subdivided into (1) mainstream myxomas of soft tissues, (2) mainstream myxomas located outside the soft tissue, (3) inadequately substantiated myxomas, (4) myxoid soft tissue tumors or lesions not regarded as myxomas, (5) myxoid fatty conditions, (6) other soft tissue lesions and tumors that are sometimes markedly myxoid, (7) other soft tissue tumors in which myxoid foci may be seen, and (8) nonneoplastic myxoid conditions of soft tissue. More than 60 such conditions are listed and the five entities regarded as mainstream soft tissue myxomas (namely, intramuscular myxoma,

[Combined central retinal artery and vein occlusion secondary to cataract surgery in a patient with persistent hyaloid artery].

CASE REPORT: A 72 year-old woman referred for cataract surgery in her right eye. Biomicroscopy revealed a retrocapsular fibrotic tissue in communication with the optic nerve, suggesting a persistent hyaloid artery (PAH). A posterior capsule rupture unexpectedly occurred during lens hydrodissection. One day after surgery, fundus examination showed a combined central retinal artery and vein occlusion. CONCLUSION: PAH is uncommon, but its presence may alert us of this possible complication during cataract surgery.

Cat-scratch disease with an extraaxial mass.

CT and MR imaging of the brain and gallium-67 scintigraphy showed an enhancing, gallium-avid mass in the left middle cranial fossa of a 10-year-old girl. Craniotomy revealed an inflammatory mass related to the left trigeminal nerve. The lesion contained rodlike bacteria, and serologic tests were positive for cat-scratch disease. Neurologic involvement in cat-scratch disease is uncommon, and the presence of organisms in neural tissue has not been reported.
