Rod photoreceptors control the ON vs OFF polarity of cone-signaling neurons.

A fundamental feature of the visual system is its ability to detect image contrast. The contrast processing starts in the first synapse of the retina where parallel pathways are established to compute contrast to bright (ON pathway) and dark (OFF pathway) objects, separately transferred to morphologically identified ON and OFF cells throughout the visual system. Here, we found that response polarity in ON and OFF neurons is not fixed but rather switches dynamically to the opposite sign. The switch was not observed in rod-knockout mice, indicating that rods generate the polarity switch. We dete

Impact of a transient neonatal visual deprivation on the development of the ventral occipito-temporal cortex in humans.

How does sensory experience shape the development of the visual brain? To answer this eluding question, we examine brain responses to visual categories in a rare group of cataract-reversal individuals who experienced a short transient period of early blindness. Encoding of low-level visual properties is impaired in the early visual cortex (EVC) of cataract-reversal participants, whereas categorical responses in downstream ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC) are preserved. In controls, degrading visual input to mimic the visual deficits of cataracts produces cascading disruptions extending

White matter disease derived from vascular and demyelinating origins.

Damage or microstructural alterations of the white matter can cause dysfunction of the intrinsic neural networks in a condition termed as white matter disease (WMD). Frequently detected on brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans, WMD is commonly presented in inflammatory demyelinating diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS) and vascular diseases such as cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). Prevention of MS and CSVD progression requires early treatments with drastically different medications and approaches, as such, early and accurate diagnosis of WMD, derived from vascula

Uncertainty Estimation in Unsupervised MR-CT Synthesis of Scoliotic Spines.

Uncertainty estimations through approximate Bayesian inference provide interesting insights to deep neural networks' behavior. In unsupervised learning tasks, where expert labels are unavailable, it becomes ever more important to critique the model through uncertainties. This paper presents a proof-of-concept for generalizing the aleatoric and epistemic uncertainties in unsupervised MR-CT synthesis of scoliotic spines. A novel adaptation of the cycle-consistency constraint in CycleGAN is proposed such that the model predicts the aleatoric uncertainty maps in addition to the standard volume-to-

The functional anatomy of a perceptual decision in the human brain.

Our ability to make rapid decisions based on sensory information belies the complexity of the underlying computations. Recently, "accumulator" models of decision making have been shown to explain the activity of parietal neurons as macaques make judgments concerning visual motion. Unraveling the operation of a decision-making circuit, however, involves understanding both the responses of individual components in the neural circuitry and the relationships between them. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging study of the decision process in humans, we demonstrate that an accumulator model

Decoding structure-function synergies in plant proteins using AlphaFold and deep learning tools.

The transition to sustainable plant-based proteins requires a molecular-level understanding of structure-function relationships that traditional analytical techniques struggle to fully characterize. This comprehensive review explores the potential of artificial intelligence in elucidating the structure-function relationship of plant proteins, particularly addressing AlphaFold and deep learning-based structural predictors to bridge this characterization gap. Through neural network architectures including graph convolutional networks, attention-based transformers, and protein language models, pr

Generative Data Augmentation for ArUco-Free RGB-Based 6-DoF Object Pose Estimation.

In recent years, data-driven approaches have become increasingly important in industrial computer vision applications, particularly for 6-Degrees-of-Freedom (6-DoF) object pose estimation. However, benchmark datasets may unintentionally introduce biases that affect the reliability of learned models. In this work, we investigate the shortcut bias induced by fiducial ArUco markers in the widely used Linemod dataset. Although such markers are typically absent in real industrial environments, they introduce unintended visual cues that neural networks tend to exploit. As a result, model selection b

Decoding the Variable Velocity of Lower-Limb Stepping Movements From EEG.

Accurate decoding of lower-limb movement from electroencephalography (EEG) is essential for developing brain-computer interface (BCI) controlled exoskeletons in neurorehabilitation. This study investigates 3D velocity decoding at three fibular anatomical markers during overground stepping in healthy participants ( ${N}={9}$ ), using two approaches: (1) linear regression (LR) and (2) a deep learning (DL) framework combining convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and long short-term memory (LSTM) units. Participants were divided into two groups: G1 ( ${n}={5}$ ) performed cued forward and self-pac

Computational method for aid in the diagnosis of sixth optic nerve palsy through digital videos.

The sixth cranial nerve, also known as the abducens nerve, is responsible for controlling the movements of the lateral rectus muscle. Palsies on the sixth nerve prevent some muscles that control eye movements from proper functioning, causing headaches, migraines, blurred vision, vertigo, and double vision. Hence, such palsy should be diagnosed in the early stages to treat it without leaving any sequela. The usual methods for diagnosing the sixth nerve palsy are invasive or depend on expensive equipment, and computer-based methods designed specifically to diagnose the aforementioned palsy were

Nonlinear modelling and simulation of climate-sensitive malaria transmission with imported infections and real data.

This study develops a climate-sensitive neural-mechanistic modelling framework for modelling weekly malaria transmission in Tak Province, Thailand. A new human-mosquito compartmental model is formulated by extending a vaccination and infected-immigration malaria system to include rainfall- and temperature-dependent transmission rates, climate-sensitive mosquito recruitment and mortality, imported infections, normalized host-vector infection terms, and cumulative incidence for comparison with reported cases. The mathematical properties of the proposed model are analysed by proving positivity of

Comparison of CBCT based synthetic CT methods suitable for proton dose calculations in adaptive proton therapy.

In-room imaging is a prerequisite for adaptive proton therapy. The use of onboard cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging, which is routinely acquired for patient position verification, can enable daily dose reconstructions and plan adaptation decisions. Image quality deficiencies though, hamper dose calculation accuracy and make corrections of CBCTs a necessity. This study compared three methods to correct CBCTs and create synthetic CTs that are suitable for proton dose calculations. CBCTs, planning CTs and repeated CTs (rCT) from 33 H&N cancer patients were used to compare a deep convol

A Thyroid Nodule Ultrasound Image Grading Model Integrating Medical Prior Knowledge.

In recent years, there has been increasing research on computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) using deep learning and image processing techniques. Still, most studies have focused on the benign-malignant classification of nodules. In this study, we propose an integrated architecture for grading thyroid nodules based on the Chinese Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (C-TIRADS). The method combines traditional handcrafted features with deep features in the extraction process. In the preprocessing stage, a pseudo-artifact removal algorithm based on the fast marching method (FMM) is employed, follo

Deep learning-based decision support system for cervical cancer identification in liquid-based cytology pap smears.

BackgroundCervical cancer is the fourth most common cause of women cancer deaths worldwide. The primary etiology of cervical cancer is the persistent infection of specific high-risk strains of the human papillomavirus. Liquid-based cytology is the established method for early detection of cervical cancer. The evaluation of cellular abnormalities at a microscopic level allows for the identification of malignant or precancerous features in liquid-based cytology pap smears. This technique is characterized by its time-consuming nature and susceptibility to both inter- and intra-observer variabilit

Fusion Learning from Non-contrast CT Scans for the Detection of Hemorrhagic Transformation in Stroke Patients.

Hemorrhagic transformation (HT) is a potentially catastrophic complication after acute ischemic stroke. Prevention of HT risk is crucial because it worsens prognosis and increases mortality. This study aimed at developing and validating a computer-aided diagnosis system using pretreatment non-contrast computed tomography (CT) scans for HT prediction in stroke patients undergoing revascularization. This retrospective study included all acute ischemic stroke patients with non-contrast CT before reperfusion therapy who also underwent follow-up MRI from January 2018 to December 2022. Among the 188
