Difference in cytological findings of healthy and conjunctivitis/keratoconjunctivitis affected canine eyes between variably experienced evaluators.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Cytology investigations are a frequent part of ophthalmological examination. We aimed to assess whether the cytological findings of healthy and conjunctivitis/keratoconjunctivitis samples differed based on the evaluator's experience. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A study evaluated healthy eyes (n = 40) and eyes affected with keratoconjunctivitis and/or conjunctivitis (n = 28) in dogs. An ophthalmological examination was performed before sampling the eyes using a sterile cotton swab. An evaluator with theoretical experience and one with undergone clinical pathology residency train

Case Report: Ipilimumab-induced Multisystem Autoimmune-like Toxicities Suggestive of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada-like Syndrome.

SIGNIFICANCE: The emergence of new cancer therapies has dramatically improved outcomes in metastatic melanoma. Immune checkpoint inhibitors have been the most effective treatment. Although, as a direct consequence of the immune dysregulation induced by them, adverse effects termed immune-related adverse events are observed in more than 60% of the patients. PURPOSE: We describe the clinical presentation of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada-like syndrome in a patient with concomitant systemic melanoma treatment with ipilimumab, a cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 blocker. METHODS: This study aime

Current concepts on diffuse choroidal hemangioma in Sturge Weber syndrome.

Background: Diffuse choroidal hemangioma (DCH) is a benign vascular tumor that is characteristically found in the Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS). Recent genetic discoveries demonstrate that DCH occurs sporadically from an activating mutation in GNAQ at codon R183. Mutations in GNAQ or GNA11 result in dysregulation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase, which influences gene transcription and results in cellular proliferation. DCH may not always be readily detected on routine ophthalmological examination, consequently diagnosis and multidisciplinary referral are often delayed.Purpose: A literatu

Non-syndromic Oculocutaneous Albinism: Novel Genetic Variants and Clinical Follow Up of a Brazilian Pediatric Cohort.

Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a genetic disorder characterized by skin, hair, and eye hypopigmentation due to a reduction or absence of melanin. Clinical manifestations include vision problems and a high susceptibility to skin cancer. In its non-syndromic form, OCA is associated with six genes and one chromosomal region. Because OCA subtypes are not always clinically distinguishable, molecular analysis has become an important tool for classifying types of OCA, which facilitates genetic counseling and can guide the development of new therapies. We studied eight Brazilian individuals aged 1.5

Transient Monocular Visual Loss: When Is It an Emergency?

BACKGROUND: Patients who experienced transient monocular vision loss (TMVL) commonly present to the emergency department for evaluation. Although multiple etiologies can cause TMVL, it is most important to identify patients with retinal ischemia and those with vasculitis (giant cell arteritis) as the cause of TMVL. Patients with transient retinal ischemia have the same risk of cardiovascular events and death as patients who experienced transient brain ischemia. Patients with giant cell arteritis are at imminent risk of visual loss. CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old man noticed three separate episode

Lack of Major Ophthalmic Findings in Patients with Primary Familial Brain Calcification Linked to SLC20A2 and PDGFB.

Primary familial brain calcification (PFBC) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder characterized by symmetrical and bilateral brain calcification. It is typically inherited as an autosomal dominant disorder, and de novo variants have also been described. Interestingly, just recent studies have reported the first autosomal recessive PFBC-causative gene. PFBC patients exhibit high clinical heterogeneity including Parkinsonism, dystonia, ataxia, depression, and migraine. Mice studies, an important research tool, have been a breakthrough in increasing the understanding of PFBC's main signs and sympt

Clinical manifestations of Wilson disease in organs other than the liver and brain.

Wilson disease (WD) is an inherited genetic disorder that is caused by copper metabolism disturbances with main hepatic, neurological, and psychiatric presentation. Deposits of copper accumulate in different organs and may cause a broad range of clinical manifestations. Patients with WD may present with ophthalmological symptoms, or renal, cardiac and osteoarticular involvement. The most common ophthalmological sign as a result of copper accumulation is the Kayser-Fleischer corneal ring, whereas sunflower cataracts are observed rarely. Retinal degeneration, present in WD patients, may serve as
