Paediatric acquired pathological vertebral collapse.

Vertebral collapse is a significant event in the paediatric patient with a real potential for associated deformity and morbidity. While in adults the causes tend towards the malignant, particularly metastatic and metabolic disease, the paediatric population demonstrates a different range of diagnoses. This article reviews the typical imaging findings of the more common underlying acquired pathological causes of vertebral collapse in children, including Langerhans cell histiocytosis, chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis, osteogenesis imperfecta. Other causes include pyogenic osteomyelitis

Clinical and pathological characteristics of organized hematoma.

Objective. To study the clinical and pathological characteristics of patients with organized hematoma with malignant features in maxillary sinuses. Subjects and Methods. This was a retrospective study of five patients who were treated surgically for organized hematoma. The preoperative CT and MRI findings were studied clinically. The expressions of CD31, CD34, and periostin in surgical samples were investigated by immunohistochemistry. Results. The clinical features of organized hematoma, such as a mass expanding from the maxillary sinus with bone destruction, resembled those of maxillary carc

Impaired self-awareness in pathological gamblers.

Lack of self-awareness of one's decisions remains an understudied and elusive topic in the addiction literature. The present study aimed at taking a first step towards addressing this difficult subject through the use of a combination of behavioral procedures. Here, we explored the association between a metacognitive process (the ability to reflect and evaluate the awareness of one's own decision) and poor performance on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) in a group of pathological gamblers (PG; n = 30), and in a comparison group (n = 35). This metacognitive process was assessed during the IGT with

Personality dimensions and disorders in pathological gambling.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review presents the most current research in personality dimensions and disorders with respect to pathological gambling. RECENT FINDINGS: Personality dimensions, such as impulsivity and impulsivity-related variables, are important aspects that may shape our understanding of the pathogenesis and treatment of pathological gambling. Furthermore, a large percentage of pathological gamblers have a co-occurring personality disorder which may impact the clinical presentation of pathological gambling. SUMMARY: Evidence suggests that pathological gamblers exhibit impulsivity o

Peripapillary intrachoroidal cavitation in pathological myopia.

CASE REPORT: A 54 year old woman with pathological myopia, presented with an elevated, yellowish-white lesion at the inferior border of the myopic conus in her left eye. The optical coherence tomography (OCT) demonstrated an intrachoroidal hyporeflective space. The fluorescein angiography examination (FA) showed early hypofluorescence with delayed staining, with no leakage of contrast. DISCUSSION: Recognition of «peripapillary intrachoroidal cavitation» as an own entity associated with pathological myopia is important to avoid confusion with other possible retinal lesions which require furthe

[Modern diagnostic tools for esophageal pathologies].

Modern functional laboratories provide various techniques for the evaluation of esophageal diseases. For proton pump inhibitor (PPI) refractory reflux symptoms the differentiation of non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease and functional heartburn is essential for the choice of further treatment. The differentiation of the two clinical entities is based on functional diagnostic methods, such as catheter-based and catheter-free pH measurement as well as combined pH measurement and intraluminal impedance. Combined pH measurement and impedance monitoring detects individual reflux episodes and

The pathological spectrum of left-ventricular hypoplasia.

Left-ventricular (LV) hypoplasia encompasses a range of LV sizes, varying from a mildly underdeveloped, but functionally adequate, chamber to the miniscule, barely perceptible LV cavity seen in hypoplastic left-heart syndrome. Associated malformations include obstructive lesions of LV inflow, outflow, and the aortic arch, often in combination. Repair of complex combinations and/or severe LV hypoplasia usually results in a single-ventricle anatomy with the right ventricle serving as the systemic ventricle. New therapeutic interventions, including fetal procedures, are expanding the spectrum of

Cryoablation and cementoplasty of a pathologic fracture in the sternum.

A 49-year-old man with metastatic melanoma and pathologic fracture of the sternum was deemed to be a poor candidate for general anaesthesia. He suffered severe pain and range of motion limitation that did not respond to narcotic therapy. Ultimately, the lesion was managed with computed tomography-guided cryoablation and subsequent cementoplasty, and saw good initial clinical results.

Nail abnormalities associated with systemic pathologies.

Nail abnormalities can arise in conjunction with or as a result of systematic pathologies. These pathologies include single-organ diseases, multisystemic diseases, and drug-induced insults. Clinical signs associated with these conditions include dyschromias, vascular alterations, periungual tissue changes, textural dystrophies, contour alterations, and growth-rate alterations. The associated systemic pathologies may affect any part of the nail apparatus, including the nail matrix, the nail plate, the nail bed, the underlying vasculature, and the periungual tissues. The anatomical location and

Homocysteine imbalance: a pathological metabolic marker.

Perturbations in methyl group metabolism and homocysteine balance have emerged over the past few decades as having defining roles in a number of pathological conditions. Numerous nutritional, hormonal, and genetic factors that are characterized by elevations in circulating homocysteine concentrations are also associated with specific pathological conditions, including cancer development, autoimmune diseases, vascular dysfunction, and neurodegenerative disease. Although much remains to be explored, our understanding of the relationship between disease, methyl balance, and epigenetic control of

Role of taurine in the pathologies of MELAS and MERRF.

Taurine is an abundant β-amino acid that concentrates in the mitochondria, where it participates in the conjugation of tRNAs for leucine, lysine, glutamate and glutamine. The formation of 5-taurinomethyluridine-tRNA strengthens the interaction of the anticodon with the codon, thereby promoting the decoding of several codons, including those for AAG, UUG, CAG and GAG. By preventing these series of events, taurine deficiency appears to diminish the formation of 5-taurinomethyluridine and causes inefficient decoding for the mitochondrial codons of leucine, lysine, glutamate and glutamine. The res

Phosphatonins: physiological role and pathological changes.

Maintenance of proper serum phosphate concentrations is required for healthy life, and critical for normal skeletal development and integrity. Several hormones and regulatory factors such as vitamin D, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and the phosphatonins (FGF-23, sFRP-4, MEPE) among others, may play a role only in the long-term regulation of phosphorus homeostasis.FGF23 is part of a previously unrecognized hormonal bone-parathyroid-kidney axis. Its synthesis and secretion by osteocytes are positively regulated by 1,25(OH)2D and serum phosphorus and negatively by the phosphate-regulating gene with

Personality disorders and dimensions in pathological gambling.

Comorbid DSM-IV Axis II personality disorders appear to be common in pathological gambling (PG) and may contribute to the chronic problems often associated with the disorder. This study sought to examine the relationship between PG, personality disorders, and impulsivity in a sample of pathological gamblers. Personality assessments included the SCID-II, Eysenck Impulsiveness Questionnaire, Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire, and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. A total of 77 individuals with DSM-IV PG were included in this study, of which 35 (45.5%) met criteria for at least one personality

[Prevalence of pathological gambling in Lebanese students].

INTRODUCTION: Pathological gambling is a behavioral dependency on hazard games that is classified, in the DSM-IV, among impulse control disorders. According to many studies, the international prevalence of pathological ranges between 2 and 6%. This disorder is often accompanied by a considerable impact on patients' life as well as on the life of people surrounding them. Adolescents and young adults are considered to be a population at risk to develop this kind of behavioral dependency. The problem of pathological gambling is one of the major problems from which the Lebanese population of unive

[Pathological gambling in patients with Parkinson disease].

Pathological gambling implies an inadequate, persistent and chronic practice of gambling which has major impact on affected individuals, their families and the society (APA, 2003). Many risk factors of social, psychological and biological nature contribute to the development of pathological gambling. New populations have been found to be at risk to develop pathological gambling : patients who suffer of Parkinson Disease's. Development of pathological gambling in those patients would mainly be related to the medication used to treat Parkinson Disease's, dopaminergic agonist. Numerous neurologic

An overview of biological basis of pathologic scarring.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To review the current mechanisms and biologic processes leading to the formation of pathologic scars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A computerised literature search was carried out using MEDLINE for all published articles on ''pathologic scarring''. The medical subject headings ''scarring'' were combined with ''mechanisms''. A review of selected relevant literature was then undertaken. RESULTS: Scarless embryonal healing tends to be characterised by minimal inflammatory reaction mediated by reduced IL6,IL8 and hyaluronidase while there are elevated levels of hyaluronic acid MMP
