Sex-dependent disruption of affective behaviors by GBR 12909: relevance to bipolar disorders.

Bipolar disorders (BD) are defined by a chronic recurrence of manic and depressive phases. Along with mood, acute phases are associated with altered emotions. The biological underpinnings of these changes are unresolved, mostly because modeling the cycling nature of BD is still a major challenge in preclinical studies. One pharmacological model is based on GBR 12909 administration, a dopamine transporter inhibitor aiming at mimicking some dimensions of mania. Recent findings indicate that this model generates a mixed phenotype, combining hyperlocomotion with negative hedonic biases and anxiety

Acidification alters anxiety-like behaviour and brain gene expression in zebrafish.

CO2-driven acidification of freshwater ecosystems is an increasing problem that could impact aquatic life in the future. Despite their physiological tolerance to naturally fluctuating pH, freshwater fishes exhibit behavioural and neurological changes in response to acidification. To determine the molecular responses associated with these anticipated impairments for the near-future, we examined the behavioural and transcriptomic responses of zebrafish (Danio rerio) to acidification, focusing on the brain and gills, which mediate behaviour and acid-base regulation. Adult zebrafish were exposed t

Gastroesophageal reflux disease with 6 neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders: Genetic correlations, causality, and potential molecular mechanisms.

The comorbidities between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and various neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders have been widely reported. However, the genetic correlations, causal relationships, and underlying mechanisms linking GERD to these disorders remain largely unknown. Here, we conducted a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to determine the causality between GERD and 6 neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders. Sensitivity analyses and multivariable MR were performed to test the robustness of our findings. Linkage disequilibrium score regression was used to

Management of polycystic ovary syndrome must include assessment and treatment of mental health symptoms.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder with reproductive and metabolic manifestations affecting millions of women worldwide. The health risks associated with PCOS, however, go beyond physical health. Over the past decade, data have emerged demonstrating a high risk of concurrent mental health conditions, specifically depression and anxiety, but extending into other aspects of psychological health, including body image distress, eating disorders, and sexual dysfunction. International surveys suggest physician knowledge about the mental health associations with PCOS is poor an

The ameliorative effect of midazolam on empathy-like behavior in old rats.

Although studies suggest that cognitive functions in the elderly are impaired, elderly people tend to be more successful and wiser in solving emotional problems. In empathy-like behavior models, the observer rat rescues the distressed cage mate by displaying emotional and cognitive ability. The aim of the study was to investigate the changes in empathy-like behavior in older rats in comparison to adult rats. In addition, we wanted to determine the effects of alterations in neurochemicals (such as corticosterone, oxytocin, vasopressin, and their receptor levels) and emotional situations on this

Early Life Obesity Increases Neuroinflammation, Amyloid Beta Deposition, and Cognitive Decline in a Mouse Model of Alzheimer's Disease.

Obesity, a known risk factor of Alzheimer's disease (AD), increases the activation of microglia, leading to a proinflammatory phenotype. Our previous work shows that a high fat diet (HFD) can cause neuroinflammation and cognitive decline in mice. We hypothesized that proinflammatory activation of brain microglia in obesity exacerbates AD pathology and increases the accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques. Presently, we tested cognitive function in 8-month-old male and female APP/PS1 mice fed a HFD, starting at 1.5 months of age. Locomotor activity, anxiety-like behavior, behavioral despair,
