The effect of ketoprofen administered in the early postpartum period on dairy cow health, production and reproduction.

Dairy cows undergo acute physiological changes over the transition from non-lactating and pregnant, through calving and initiation of lactation. Inflammation is necessary for adaption to these changes; however, excess inflammation in dairy cows is common and associated with poorer health, production and reproduction. Therefore, reducing inflammation at calving with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ketoprofen, could reduce the negative consequences of inflammation. In this study, we recruited 1144 cows from five commercial dairy farms which were randomised to either receive one do

Ketone bodies in the developing brain: Sex-specific metabolic pathways during the neonatal period.

The developing central nervous system (CNS) relies on tightly regulated metabolic substrates, including glucose, lactate, and ketone bodies (KBs), to energy demands, brain maturation and neural circuit formation. Disruptions in substrate flow availability during early life can lead to long-lasting brain functional and structural impairments. Among these substrates, KBs serve as a critical alternative fuel during the neonatal period, sustaining cerebral energy demands under conditions of limited glucose availability and metabolic stress. Mounting evidence highlights pronounced sex-specific diff

Multifocal Osteoarticular Infection by Methicillin-Sensitive Staphylococcus aureus in the Neonatal Period: A Diagnostic Challenge.

We report the case of a 15-day-old neonate presenting with multifocal osteoarticular infection, initially manifesting as septic arthritis of the right wrist, which rapidly progressed to involve multiple sites, including the right deltoid and left hip. The etiological agent was identified as methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). This case is notable for its multifocality, the severity of the clinical course in the neonatal period, and the association with a prior history of neonatal admission for severe hypernatremic dehydration.

Profiles of specialized pro-resolving mediators in dairy cows with a healthy postpartum period or with endometritis.

In humans and laboratory species, specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPM), a class of cell-signaling molecules originating from the metabolism of PUFA, emerged as mediators of inflammation resolution, but their role in other species remains almost unknown. In dairy cows, postpartum uterine involution involves a physiological transient inflammation, which may evolve into a pathologic inflammation (endometritis). This observational retrospective cohort study characterized the SPM profiles of plasma (2, 10, and 21 d postpartum; DPP) and uterine fluid (21 DPP) of healthy cows (n = 19), and their

Long-period grating optical fiber sensor for IgG-type monoclonal protein measurement.

Measuring monoclonal proteins (M-proteins) plays an important role in the diagnosis and monitoring of plasma cell dyscrasias. Measurements of M-proteins are mostly conducted by electrophoresis, which requires complex sample processing and takes several hours to obtain a result. In this work, IgG kappa M-protein (IgGκ) and IgG lambda M-protein (IgGλ) sensors are developed based on a long-period grating optical fiber sensor. The IgGκ sensor has a limit of detection (LoD) of 2.78 μg/mL and a selectivity of 9.73. The IgGλ sensor has an LoD of 2.75 μg/mL and a selectivity of 27.9. The sensor has su

Allergy to Ringer's Lactate - Uncommon Cause of Anaphylaxis during Intraoperative Period: A Case Report.

Perioperative anaphylaxis is a rare but potentially fatal event, with an incidence ranging from 1:300 to 1:20,000 surgeries and a mortality rate of 3-9%. Its intraoperative occurrence is diagnostically challenging due to patient sedation and overlapping drug effects. Crystalloids like Ringer's Lactate are rarely implicated. A 27-year-old American Society of Anesthesiologists grade I female undergoing mastoidectomy developed intraoperative hypotension, tachycardia, and generalized erythema after induction with standard anesthetics and Ringer's Lactate infusion. Anaphylaxis was suspected, and Ri

Seasonal Variation in Leaf Mineral Nutrients and the Determination of the Nutritional Diagnostic Period of Paeonia ostii.

Paeonia ostii, a significant perennial woody oil crop in China, is notable for its seeds' high oil content and elevated levels of unsaturated fatty acids. However, there is currently a lack of scientific fertilisation protocols and targeted nutrient management for P. ostii. The concentrations of macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg) and micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu) were determined in the leaves at five distinct growth stages: flowering, initial fruit set, fruit expansion, late fruiting, and foliar senescence. The levels of N and P were found to be at their highest point during the flower

Mapping histologic and functional maturation of human endocrine pancreas across early postnatal periods.

Human endocrine cell differentiation and islet morphogenesis play critical roles in determining islet cell mass and function, but the events and timeline of these processes are incompletely defined. To better understand early human islet cell development and maturation, we collected 123 pediatric pancreata and mapped morphological and spatiotemporal changes from birth through the first ten years of life. Using quantitative analyses and a combination of complementary tissue imaging approaches, including confocal microscopy and whole-slide multiplex imaging, we developed an integrated model for

Abnormal amniotic fluid volume is associated with neonatal respiratory outcomes in the late preterm period.

INTRODUCTION: The clearance of fluid from the fetal lungs is important for a neonate to successfully transition to breathing room air. We hypothesized that abnormal amounts of amniotic fluid (AF; either oligohydramnios [OLIGO] or polyhydramnios [POLY]) would increase the risk of neonatal respiratory morbidity. METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of a multicenter randomized controlled trial. Patients were included if they were of late preterm gestation (34w0d-36w5d) and had documented AF volume. Two exposures were separately investigated-OLIGO (maximum vertical pocket [MVP] <2 cm or AF
