A short survival time after last psychiatric hospitalization in drivers with psychotic disorder killed in fatal motor vehicle accidents.

BACKGROUND: Research-based evidence on patients with psychotic disorders involved in fatal motor vehicle accidents (FMVA) remains limited. The current study analyzes the characteristics of FMVA drivers, who had been hospitalized due to psychotic disorders within a five-year-time-period prior to their death in traffic accidents. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data sources included three national registers: The Finnish Database of Road and Cross-Country Accidents, the Care Register for Health Care and the National Cause of Death Register. The register-linkage was made using personal identity codes, uniq

Neuropsychiatric "Comorbidity" as Causal Influence in Autism.

Behavioral comorbidity is the rule rather than the exception in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and the co-occurrence of autistic traits with subclinical manifestations of other psychiatric syndromes (eg, anxiety, developmental coordination disorder) extends to the general population, where there is strong evidence for overlap in the respective genetic causes. An ASD "comorbidity" can have several fundamentally distinct causal origins: it can arise due to shared genetic risk between ASD and non-ASD phenotypes (eg, ASD and microcephaly in the context of the MECP2 mutation), as a "secondary symp

Neurocognitive dysfunction in problem gamblers with co-occurring antisocial personality disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Problem gamblers with symptoms of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) may represent a distinct problem gambling subtype, but the neurocognitive profile of individuals affected by both disorders is poorly characterized. METHOD: Non-treatment-seeking young adults (18-29years) who gambled ≥5 times in the preceding year were recruited from the general community. Problem gamblers (defined as those meeting ≥1 DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for gambling disorder) with a lifetime history of ASPD (N=26) were identified using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and compar

The relationship between personal debt and specific common mental disorders.

BACKGROUND: Personal debt is now recognized as one of the many factors associated with common mental disorders (CMD). We aim to estimate the prevalence of 'specific' mental disorders based on ICD-10 research diagnostic criteria by type of debt and quantify the additional influence of addictive behaviours. METHOD: A random probability sample comprising 7461 respondents were interviewed for the third national survey of psychiatric morbidity of adults in England carried out in 2007. The prevalence of CMD was estimated from the administration of the CIS-R. Respondents were asked about sources of

Depressive-type emotional response pattern in impulsive-aggressive patients with borderline personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is typically characterized by severe affective dysregulation leading to impulsive behaviors. Accordingly, preliminary data suggest the hypothesis that BPD patients could have a specific and altered pattern of subjective emotional response to stimuli. The nature of the emotional response in BPD can be compared with other affective disorders and provide further insight on the nosological proximity with other psychiatric disorders. METHODS: Subjective emotional response was investigated in 19 patients with DSM-IV BPD with no current depressive

Role of social support and self-efficacy in treatment outcomes among clients with co-occurring disorders.

Individuals with co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders have a more severe clinical course and poorer outcomes than do individuals with one disorder. In an attempt to find intervening variables that may contribute to improvement in treatment outcomes among individuals with co-occurring disorders, we investigated the roles of social support and self-efficacy in a sample of 351 clients with co-occurring disorders in residential drug abuse treatment programs (53% male; 35% African American, 13% Hispanic). Given their demographic variability, we also explored how ethnicity and age in

Psychoanalytic patients in the U.S., CANADA, and Australia: I. DSM-III-R disorders, indications, previous treatment, medications, and length of treatment.

To determine the demographics, DSM-III-R disorders diagnosed, indications used in recommending psychoanalysis, previous treatment histories, use of medication, and length of treatment in patients in psychoanalysis in the U.S., Canada, and Australia, a mail survey of practice was sent to every other active member of the American Psychoanalytic Association and every member of the Australian Psychoanalytical Society. This supplemented an earlier survey sent to all Ontario psychoanalysts. The response rates were 40.1 % (n = 342) for the U.S., 67.2% (n = 117) for Canada, and 73.9% (n = 51) for Aust

Post-traumatic stress disorder and its associated factors among survivors of 2015 earthquake in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Natural disasters cause long term psychological consequences, especially post-traumatic stress disorders. It has been regarded as the most prevalent of psychiatric disorders after a natural disaster. The purpose of this study is to estimate the prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and determine its associated factors in adult survivors three years after the 2015 Nepal earthquake. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive design was used where 1076 adults within the age range of 19-65 were randomly selected and interviewed from four adversely affected districts due to t

Association of Stress-Related Disorders With Subsequent Autoimmune Disease.

IMPORTANCE: Psychiatric reactions to life stressors are common in the general population and may result in immune dysfunction. Whether such reactions contribute to the risk of autoimmune disease remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is an association between stress-related disorders and subsequent autoimmune disease. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Population- and sibling-matched retrospective cohort study conducted in Sweden from January 1, 1981, to December 31, 2013. The cohort included 106 464 exposed patients with stress-related disorders, with 1 064 640 matched unexp

[Acceptance and commitment therapy].

INTRODUCTION: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a third generation of cognitive-behavioral therapies. The point is to help patients to improve their psychological flexibility in order to accept unavoidable private events. Thus, they have the opportunity to invest energy in committed actions rather than struggle against their psychological events. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY: (i) To present the ACT basic concepts and (ii) to propose a systematic review of the literature about effectiveness of this kind of psychotherapy. METHOD: (i) The core concepts of ACT come from Monestès (2011), Scho

Ultrasound neuromodulation in brain disorders: from mechanotransduction mechanisms to clinical translation.

Brain disorders impose a major global health burden, yet current pharmacological and neuromodulation therapies are often constrained by invasiveness, limited spatial precision, poor access to deep brain structures, or insufficient long-term efficacy. Non-invasive ultrasound neuromodulation has emerged as a promising approach combining high spatial resolution, deep tissue penetration, and reversible modulation. Its biological effects arise from multiscale mechanotransduction involving membrane deformation, mechanosensitive ion channels, intracellular calcium signaling, glial regulation, and neu

Psychedelics as a potential treatment for borderline personality disorder: A narrative review.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness with high rates of morbidity and stigma; however, successful remission is frequently limited by a paucity of accessible treatment options. In an era of growing interest in psychedelics as novel psychiatric treatment modalities, patients with BPD are often excluded from research due to perceived safety risks, particularly pertaining to suicide and substance misuse. However, there is evolving evidence that psychedelic treatment may effectively target core BPD symptoms, in addition to those of the mood and anxiety disorders frequen

Serial killer and necrophilia: Report of twenty-five years of treatment and management in a rare case.

The authors report a case of a sexual serial killer responsible for four homicides (one homosexual and three prostitutes) over a 12-year period. The perpetrator was diagnosed with a severe personality disorder and necrophilia at the time of the crimes and was declared partially mentally impaired and dangerous to societal security by the Court of Jurisdiction for these crimes. The offender served 22 years in prison, including half of the detention in an OPG (High Security Forensic Psychiatry Hospital) receiving psychiatric treatment. This was followed by 3 years of internment in the REMS (Resid

Educational attainment in eating disorders: What can we learn from visualising data.

BACKGROUND: Educational attainment is an understudied outcome in eating disorders (ED). We compared the educational attainment of individuals with and without ED. METHODS: This study is a nationwide, register-based, observational epidemiological study using record linkage. The studied cohorts were (1) all persons treated psychiatrically for ED from 1970 to 2014, and (2) a control population matched for sex, age, and place of residence. The International Standard Classification of Education 2011 was used to classify educational attainment. We employed ineqord, a series of graphical and analyti

Consequences of prefrontal tDCS on inhibitory control and reactive aggression.

Increased aggression and impulsivity represent a key component of several psychiatric disorders, including substance use disorder, which is often associated with deficient prefrontal brain activation. Thus, innovative tools to increase cognitive control are highly warranted. The current study investigates the potential of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a tool to modulate cortical activation and to increase cognitive control in individuals with a high potential for impulsive and aggressive behavior. In a double-blind, sham-controlled study, we applied anodal tDCS over the right

Gaisbock Syndrome: A Review of Contemporary Studies, Pathogenesis, Complications, and Possible Treatment.

Gaisbock syndrome is the term ascribed to several conditions initially observed by Felix Gaisbock, MD, (from Innsbruck, Tyrol, Austria) in 1905 when he described a group of hypertensive male patients who had high hematocrit levels, normal leukocyte counts, and no splenomegaly. These patients had an overweight, stocky habitus, a plethoric appearance with suffusion of the eyes, tense and anxious personalities, a cigarette smoking habit, vascular disease, headaches, and facial rubor. Later studies identified alcoholism, diuretic therapy, and physical or emotional stress as additional risk factors

Psychometric Properties of the Italian Version of the 25-Item Hikikomori Questionnaire for Adolescents.

Hikikomori is a form of social withdrawal that is commonly described as having an onset during adolescence, a life stage when other psychiatric problems can also emerge. This study aimed to adapt the 25-item Hikikomori Questionnaire (HQ-25) for the Italian adolescent population, examining its psychometric properties; associations between hikikomori and psychoticism, depression, anxiety, problematic internet use (PIU), psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), to confirm convergent validity of the HQ-25; and the interaction effect between symptoms of hikikomori and PIU in predicting PLEs. Two-hundred

Bipolar disorder in the postpartum period: the impact of a prenatal mood episode on maternal improvement at postpartum discharge after joint inpatient hospitalization.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is linked to a high risk of relapse in the year postpartum. The aim of this study was to search for an association of a mood episode during pregnancy with a lack of maternal improvement after a post-partum episode requiring joint hospitalization. In an observational, naturalist, and multicentric study, 261 women suffering from a BD and jointly hospitalized with their child in a Mother-Baby Unit (MBU) were assessed for risk factors associated with a lack of maternal improvement at discharge. A directed acyclic graph (DAG)-based approach was used to identify confounders to

New Perspectives on Transgender Health in the Forthcoming 11th Revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems: An Overview of Gender Incongruence - Depathologization, Considerations and Recommendations for Practitioners.

On June 18th, 2018, the World Health Organization officially released its new International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) for preview; it was presented on World Health Assembly in May 2019 for adoption by Member States. Since ICD 11 is planned to come into effect and be officially used as from January 1st, 2022, this early sneak peek allows health care professionals enough time to prepare for the new classification and all the changes it brings along. ICD 11 moves away from stigmatizing practices of psychiatrization of transgender persons and finally excludes issues of gender identity fr

Evidence of subgroups in smokers as revealed in clinical measures and evaluated by neuroimaging data: a preliminary study.

To date, fractionation of the nicotine addiction phenotype has been limited to that based primarily on characteristics of cigarette use, although it is widely appreciated that a variety of individual factors are associated with tobacco use disorder. Identifying subtypes of tobacco use disorder based on such factors may lead to better understanding of potential treatment targets, individualize treatments and improve outcomes. In this preliminary study, to identify potential subgroups, we applied hierarchical clustering to a broad range of assessments measuring personality, IQ and psychiatric sy
