A novel MCA occlusion model of photothrombotic ischemia with cyclic flow reductions: development of cerebral hemorrhage induced by heparin.

Intracerebral hemorrhage is the major complication associated with antithrombotic and thrombolytic therapy. Despite efforts directed toward achieving hemorrhagic infarction, an ideal animal model of cerebral hemorrhage has not yet to be established. Using the photothrombotic technique in rabbits, we developed a model of cerebral hemorrhage by inducing cyclic flow reductions in the middle cerebral artery (MCA). Furthermore, the hemorrhage increased 4-fold after infusion of heparin at a dose prolonging activated partial thromboplastin time by about three times that of control animals. The photot

Spatiotemporal brain imaging of visual-evoked activity using interleaved EEG and fMRI recordings.

Combined analysis of electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has the potential to provide higher spatiotemporal resolution than either method alone. In some situations, in which the activity of interest cannot be reliably reproduced (e.g., epilepsy, learning, sleep states), accurate combined analysis requires simultaneous acquisition of EEG and fMRI. Simultaneous measurements ensure that the EEG and fMRI recordings reflect the exact same brain activity state. We took advantage of the spatial filtering properties of the bipolar montage to allow recording of

Parietal electroencephalogram beta asymmetry and selective attention to angry facial expressions in healthy human subjects.

Research on cerebral affective processing in humans has concentrated on the lateralization of the prefrontal cortex. However, the parietal cortex also seems to play a role in motivation and emotion. In the present study the lateralized role of the parietal cortex in motivated attention was investigated, using an electrophysiological correlate of brain activity (electroencephalogram (EEG)) and a modified Dot probe task, which indexes selective, i.e. avoidant or vigilant attention for angry faces in a spatial display. Twenty-two participants underwent an EEG baseline recording from the F3, F4, P

[Topographic distribution of visual evoked potentials in optic neuropathy].

INTRODUCTION: Digital treatment of electrical signals coming from the central nervous system on stimulation of the optic nerve path offers an objective method for evaluation of visual evoked potentials (VEP) shown graphically on a cerebral map. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the topographical distribution of VEP in cases of optic neuropathy adding this parameter to the usual parameters of latency and amplitude. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 35 patients with suspected optic neuropathy and normal findings on basic ophthalmological examination, in whom VEP and VEP mapping (VEPM) was done. RESULTS:

Evidence supportive of a functional discrimination between photopic oscillatory potentials as revealed with cone and rod mediated retinopathies.

We report on a family where four of the eleven children presented with reduced visual acuities, a red-green deficit at the Farnsworth-Munsel FM 100-hue test, normal appearing fundi and unexpected electroretinographic findings. Light- (photopic) and dark- (scotopic) adapted electroretinograms (ERG) and oscillatory potentials (OPs) were obtained following an accepted standard protocol. The b-wave of their photopic ERG was significantly more attenuated than the a-wave due to the specific abolition of OP4, while the amplitudes of OP2 and OP3 were within the normal range, giving to the b-wave a tru

[Visual compromise of automobile drivers by frontal photo-flash in mesoptic conditions].

The time for recovery of recognition of an optotype presented at a distance of 40 m subsequent to exposure to a flash gun (Eso company, Tettnang; flash energy 200 Ws, duration 1/1000 s; distance 10 m) was studied on 97 subjects aged 20 to 83 years. A Landolt-ring (contrast 1:5, diameter 29 cm), mounted on a disk (diameter 58 cm) which could be rotated in steps of 45 degrees served as a test target. The flash gun could be dimmed down by a red filter (Schott RG 665). The tests were performed at night without additional illumination except the low beam of the car. The flash gun was foveally fixat

Asymmetry and ventral course of the human geniculostriate pathway as determined by hippocampal visual evoked potentials and subsequent visual field defects after temporal lobectomy.

Twenty-two patients with psychomotor epilepsy were implanted with depth electrodes along the axis of the mesial temporal lobe to identify an operable unilateral epileptic focus. Neuronal and field potentials were recorded in response to diffuse retinal illumination and clear short-latency responses were found in parahippocampal gyrus. These visual afferents in the mesial temporal lobe are assumed to be both from subcortical and cortical visual areas. There was a clear asymmetry in the ventral trajectory of the geniculostriate pathway as evidenced by asymmetric neuronal and field potential resp

Repetitive light stimulation inducing glycine receptor plasticity in the retinal neurons.

Neurotransmitter receptor plasticity is a mechanism that can regulate the temporal and intensity encoding of a synapse. While this has been extensively studied as a mechanism of learning, less is known about such processes in sensory systems. This study examines modulation of glycine receptor function at the first synapse in the retina. It was found that horizontal cells, which are postsynaptic to photoreceptors, have glycine receptor currents that are enhanced when internal calcium is elevated. This can be achieved by glutamatergic synaptic input or by activation of voltage-gated calcium chan

Modelling event-related skin conductance responses.

Analytic tools for psychophysiological signals often make implicit assumptions that are unspecified. In developing a mathematical framework for analysis of skin conductance responses [SCRs], we formalise our assumptions by positing that SCRs can be regarded as the output of a linear time-invariant filter. Here, we provide an empirical test of these assumptions. Our findings indicate that a large component of the variance in SCRs can be explained by one response function per individual. We note that baseline variance (i.e. variance in the absence of evoked responses) is higher than variance tha

Attentional functions of parietal and frontal cortex.

A model of normal attentional function, based on the concept of competitive parallel processing, is used to compare attentional deficits following parietal and frontal lobe lesions. Measurements are obtained for visual processing speed, capacity of visual short-term memory (VSTM), spatial bias (bias to left or right hemifield) and top-down control (selective attention based on task relevance). The results show important differences, but also surprising similarities, in parietal and frontal lobe patients. For processing speed and VSTM, deficits are selectively associated with parietal lesions,

Microelectrode-guided pallidotomy: technical approach and its application in medically intractable Parkinson's disease.

OBJECT: The authors describe the microelectrode recording and stimulation techniques used for localizing the caudal sensorimotor portion of the globus pallidus internus (GPi) and nearby structures (internal capsule and optic tract) in patients undergoing GPi pallidotomy. METHODS: Localization is achieved by developing a topographic map of the abovementioned structures based on the physiological characteristics of neurons in the basal ganglia and the microexcitable properties of the internal capsule and optic tract. The location of the caudal GPi can be determined by "form fitting" the physiol

The Retinal Light Response Is Modulated by an mGluR5-Mediated Retrograde Signal from ON-Bipolar Cells to Photoreceptors.

The ON visual pathway is initiated by the deactivation of mGluR6, coupled to the opening of TRPM1 channels in retinal ON-bipolar cell dendrites. Here, we show that a second metabotropic glutamate receptor, mGluR5, is localized with TRPM1 and mGluR6 in the dendrites of ON-bipolar cells. To examine the function of mGluR5, we performed electroretinogram (ERG) recordings in mice of either sex and found that the amplitude of the b-wave, which is primarily a measure of ON-bipolar cell light-driven activity, is reduced in mGluR5 knock-out mice compared with wild type. In the mGluR5-/- retina, we obse

Subjective Responses of Gynephilic Men and Women to Real versus Artificial Female Nudes.

Depictions of visual sexual stimuli are changing with the advent of computer-generated imagery (CGI), hyper-realistic and idealized images created by artificial Intelligence (AI), and artistic styles such as hentai, that depict a diverse range of sexual situations and characteristics. Here we assessed the subjective realism, aesthetic value, subjective sexual attractiveness, and valence (pleasantness) of images depicting natural or surgically enhanced naked women taken from real photographs or in formats created by CGI, AI, or as dolls or hentai. Self-identified gynephilic males and females (N

Coordination of distinct sources of excitatory inputs enhances motion selectivity in the mouse visual thalamus.

Multiple sources innervate the visual thalamus to influence image-forming vision prior to the cortex, yet coordination between non-retinal and retinal inputs in shaping thalamic visual selectivity remains unclear. Using dual-color two-photon calcium imaging in the thalamus of awake mice, we observed a higher fraction of direction-selective boutons among input from superior colliculus neurons than from retinal ganglion cells, both providing strong converging excitatory input to thalamic neurons. Collicular and retinal axons exhibit retinotopic organization with similar precision. At a fine scal

Prodromal Alzheimer's Disease Demonstrates Increased Errors at a Simple and Automated Anti-Saccade Task.

Saccade alterations are potential early signs of Alzheimer's disease. However, uncertainty persists in how early and reliably automated saccade recording systems detect impairments. This multicenter pathophysiological case-control transversal study explored saccade execution in carefully diagnosed amnestic mild cognitive impairment patients fulfilling research criteria for prodromal Alzheimer's disease (n = 29), as compared to both aged-matched mild Alzheimer's disease patients (n = 23) and controls (n = 27). Auto-coded saccades from horizontal (gap) vertical (step) stimulus elicited pro-sacca

Longitudinal Changes in Retinotopic Rod Function in Intermediate Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

PURPOSE: Although impairment of rod function in the early stages of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has been well recognized, data on longitudinal changes in rod function at multiple retinal locations remain limited. This study investigated the longitudinal changes in retinotopic rod function in eyes with intermediate AMD (iAMD). METHODS: Complete ophthalmic examination, multimodal imaging, and scotopic perimetry were performed at baseline and at 12-month follow-up. Perimetric scotopic retinal sensitivities for the 505-nm stimulus were repeatedly measured for 20 minutes after exposing

Viewing socio-affective stimuli increases connectivity within an extended default mode network.

Empathy is an essential ability for prosocial behavior. Previous imaging studies identified a number of brain regions implicated in affective and cognitive aspects of empathy. In this study, we investigated the neural correlates of empathy from a network perspective using graph theory and beta-series correlations. Two independent data sets were acquired using the same paradigm that elicited empathic responses to socio-affective stimuli. One data set was used to define the network nodes and modular structure, the other data set was used to investigate the effects of emotional versus neutral sti

The Effect of Acutely Elevated Intraocular Pressure on the Functional and Blood Flow Responses of the Rat Retina to Flicker Stimulation.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of acutely elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) on the functional and blood flow responses of the rat retina to flicker stimulation. METHODS: Brown Norway (n = 15) rats were dark-adapted before ketamine/xylazine anesthesia. IOP was raised acutely in one eye to ∼45 mm Hg with a vascular loop. In 11 rats, white light flicker stimulus (10 Hz, 2 seconds duration, 0.80 log scotopic cd·s/m2) was applied before and during IOP elevation, and 10 minutes after loop removal. Changes in the total retinal blood flow (TRBF) and retinal function induced by the visual stimulus

Early-life stress induces cognitive disorder in middle-aged mice.

Early-life stress can induce several neuropsychological disorders in adulthood. However, the underlying mechanisms inducing such disorders are still not fully understood. Furthermore, the effects of early-life stress on the changes in cognitive function with age are still not clarified. In this study, we used maternal deprivation (MD) to examine the cognitive function in middle-aged mice using a touchscreen-equipped operant chamber. In the visual-discrimination task, the aged (∼1.4 years old) control mice could accurately learn to discriminate between different visual stimuli. In contrast, the
