Conducting a diabetes mellitus prevention trial in women with GDM in Pakistan: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) than women without GDM. Despite this elevated risk, few trials on the prevention of T2DM among South Asian women with GDM have been reported. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the feasibility of conducting a diabetes prevention program on women with a history of GDM to inform the development of a contextually relevant definitive trial. METHODS: Using a randomized controlled trial, women with GDM (n = 180) who delivered at the study hospitals (one public and one pr

Cadaveric Biomechanical Study of Partial Glenoid Arthroplasty Versus the Latarjet Procedure for Anterior Glenoid Bone Loss.

BACKGROUND: For severe anterior glenoid bone loss due to recurrent shoulder instability, the Latarjet procedure offers a dynamic sling effect in addition to bone augmentation. Yet, it heavily alters the surrounding anatomy, while fixation and graft union issues are also common. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to compare a novel printed 3-dimensional (3D) partial glenoid arthroplasty (PGA) implant with the classic Latarjet procedure. It was hypothesized that by replicating the original glenoid geometry and preserving soft tissue anatomy, PGA may better reproduce normal joint

Bioprinting of hair follicle germs for hair regenerative medicine.

Hair regenerative medicine is a promising approach to treat hair loss. The replication of in vivo tissue configurations and microenvironments, such as hair follicle germs, has been studied to prepare tissue grafts for hair regenerative medicine. However, such approaches should be scalable, because a single patient with alopecia requires thousands of tissue grafts. In this paper, we propose an approach for the scalable and automated preparation of highly hair-inductive tissue grafts using a bioprinter. Two collagen droplets (2 µL each) containing mesenchymal and epithelial cells were placed adj

3D-printable stimulation electrodes to improve precision, reproducibility, and reliability of transcranial electric current stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial electric stimulation (tES) refers to noninvasive neuromodulation techniques that apply a low-amplitude electric current through scalp electrodes to modulate brain activity. Conventional scalp electrodes are made of conductive rubber and are embedded in saline-soaked sponges, held in place using non-conductive rubber straps. Precisely positioning the electrodes at the desired location is challenging, and maintaining their position is equally difficult. In addition, as sponges are prone to drying out during prolonged use, they can compromise the electrode's conductivity a

Biomaterials for organically generated habitats beyond Earth.

Sustaining life beyond Earth requires the creation of habitats, which is typically assumed to require costly transport of high-mass components from Earth. Here, we investigate an alternative approach based on in situ fabrication using biologically generated materials. We show that several common biomaterials are capable of blocking UV radiation, transmitting visible light, and maintaining pressure differences sufficient to permanently stabilize liquid H2O in a vacuum or low-pressure environment. As a proof of concept, we then demonstrate growth of eukaryotic green alga in a 3D printed PLA biop
