Dietary Selenium-Enriched Bacillus subtilis Improves Feed Utilization and Modulates Selected Responses to LPS Challenge in Laying Hens.

This study evaluated the effects of dietary selenium-enriched Bacillus subtilis (HBS) supplementation on laying performance, egg quality, and responses to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge. A total of 120 Jinghong-1 laying hens received a basal or HBS-supplemented diet for 12 weeks. Subsequently, hens within each dietary replicate were allocated to phosphate-buffered saline (PBS)- or LPS-injected subgroups, and one hen per subgroup was sampled 12 h after injection, yielding six sampled hens per treatment combination. HBS supplementation reduced the feed-to-egg ratio (1.96 vs. 2.15, p = 0.023)

Synbiotics as a Microbiome-Based Strategy in Colorectal Cancer.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a multifactorial disease arising from dynamic interactions between gut microbiota, inflammatory processes, metabolic reprogramming, and dysregulated host signaling pathways. Increasing evidence highlights the potential of synbiotics-combinations of probiotics and prebiotics-as promising modulators of these processes. This review explores the mechanisms by which synbiotics influence CRC development and progression, integrating data from preclinical and clinical studies. Synbiotics exert beneficial effects by restoring microbial balance, enhancing the production of sho…

Gut microbiome dysbiosis in PCOS: from pathogenesis to microbiome-targeted therapies.

(PCOS), one of the most common endocrine and metabolic disorders in women of reproductive age, has a complex pathogenesis that continues to be unraveled by ongoing research. The condition is defined by three key features: hyperandrogenemia, ovulatory dysfunction, and insulin resistance. Recent studies have highlighted the gut microbiome and its metabolites as crucial regulators in PCOS development. Evidence suggests that gut dysbiosis and intestinal barrier dysfunction play a pivotal role in the onset and progression of PCOS. This review comprehensively examines the central role of gut microbi

The Role of Lactic Acid Bacteria in Colon Cancer Mitigation: Insights into Mechanisms of Action.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have garnered significant attention for their potential role in mitigating cancer through various mechanisms of action, such as immunoregulation. The LAB, primarily from the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, contribute to gut health by maintaining microbial balance, enhancing gut barrier function, and producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Colon cancer and colorectal cancer are some of the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide, with their incidence rising in many parts of the world. This review explores the ecology and the con

"Envbiotics" -- a novel framework for microbiota-targeted therapeutic strategies in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Imbalance of the gut microbiota is an important trigger for insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM). Microbiota-targeted therapies have gradually become an emerging research direction for treating T2DM. However, exogenous strain interventions (supplementing probiotics and fecal microbiota transplantation), endogenous optimization of the gut microbiota (supplementing prebiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics), and phage therapy focus on "directly introducing microorganisms," "feeding microorganisms," or "directly utilizing microbial components." These approaches cannot cover active s…

An Adaptive In Situ Biointerfacial Armoring Platform for Long-Term Gut Microbiota Modulation.

Despite the immense potential against diverse chronic inflammatory and metabolic disorders, the clinical translation of microbial therapies is largely thwarted by the delivery challenges of live biotherapeutics. Probiotics often succumb to harsh gastrointestinal conditions and oxidative stress. We report ARMOG, a microenvironment responsive platform achieving in situ biointerfacial transformation. Composed of hyaluronic acid with an increased dopamine grafting ratio cross-linked by arylboronic acid, the matrix undergoes cleavage triggered by the inflammatory microenvironment, leading to locali…

Next-generation microbiome therapeutics: psychobiotics and fecal microbiota transplants for mental health treatment.

The human gastrointestinal tract (GIT) harbors a diverse microbial community, collectively referred to as gut microbiota, which plays an essential role in maintaining host physiology, metabolism, immune function, and neurobehavioral processes. Mounting evidence highlights the importance of the bidirectional Gut-brain (GB) axis, through which gut microbes influence neural signalling, stress response, and emotional regulation. Dysbiosis of this axis has been associated with psychiatric, neurodevelopmental, and neurodegenerative disorders, such as anxiety, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), major de

Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Bacillus subtilis show modest, node-dependent effects on insulin sensitivity in periparturient cows.

Periparturient immunometabolic adaptations yield small, node-dependent shifts in endotoxin proxies and insulin-sensitivity indices. Direct-fed microbials (DFM) are mechanistically plausible but often produce modest metabolic readouts. Test whether Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC), Bacillus subtilis (BS), or SC + BS alter endotoxin (blood, milk) and metabolic families versus Control (Ctrl) across prespecified nodes, and evaluate prespecified equivalence where applicable. A 4-arm trial enrolled 20 Holsteins from -60 to + 21 d around calving (Ctrl, SC, BS, SC+BS). Blood and milk were sampled at mult

Lactobacillus brevis ZFM820 modulates intestinal ecological sulfur homeostasis to alleviate Desulfovibrio-driven colitis.

The overgrowth of Desulfovibrio has been increasingly recognized as a hallmark of dysbiosis in certain inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) settings. This pathobiont actively secretes excessive hydrogen sulfide (H2S) via sulfate reduction, which, combined with impaired host detoxification, severely disrupts intestinal sulfur homeostasis and drives mucosal damage. However, conventional therapeutics fail to concurrently address this ecological metabolic imbalance. Here, we demonstrate that L. brevis ZFM820 effectively modulates intestinal ecological sulfur homeostasis to alleviate Desulfovibrio-driv

Microbiome immune crosstalk in Sjögren's syndrome: mechanistic insights and translational perspectives.

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a systemic autoimmune disorder driven by interactions among genetic susceptibility, environmental factors, and alterations in mucosal microbial ecosystems. Emerging evidence from studies of the gut, oral cavity, and ocular surface indicates that microbial dysbiosis is closely associated with SS. Patients frequently exhibit reduced beneficial commensals and expansion of potentially pathogenic taxa, accompanied by epithelial barrier disruption, imbalance of T helper 17 and regulatory T cells, abnormal B-cell responses, and sustained activation of type I interferon sign
