Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Regarding Organ Donation among Students of Jazan University: A Cross-sectional Study.

For several end-stage diseases, the only treatment option is organ transplantation, but the availability of organs is a challenge. More thorough knowledge and more positive attitudes toward organ donation among university students may encourage greater willingness to donate an organ. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding organ donation among students of Jazan University, Saudi Arabia, via a 30-item questionnaire. Of the 558 respondents, 71.1% were males, 28.9% were females, and 92.1% were <25 years old. The participants were categorized as either in healt

Cleaning products: Their chemistry, effects on indoor air quality, and implications for human health.

The use of cleaning and disinfecting products both at work and at home increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Those products often include surfactants, acids/bases, carcinogens such as chloroform, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals, such as cyclosiloxanes, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances, which may cause harmful health effects among professional cleaners as well as among people exposed at home or in their workplaces. The aim of this study was to synthesize the effects of the commonly used chemical, surface cleaning and disinfecting products on indoor air quality, focusing on chemical and

Penicillin allergy status and its effect on antibiotic prescribing, patient outcomes and antimicrobial resistance (ALABAMA): protocol for a multicentre, parallel-arm, open-label, randomised pragmatic trial.

INTRODUCTION: Incorrect penicillin allergy records are recognised as an important barrier to the safe treatment of infection and affect an estimated 2.7 million people in England. Penicillin allergy records are associated with worse health outcome and antimicrobial resistance. The ALlergy AntiBiotics And Microbial resistAnce (ALABAMA) trial aims to determine if an intervention package, centred around a penicillin allergy assessment pathway (PAAP) initiated in primary care, is safe and effective in improving patient health outcomes and antibiotic prescribing. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The ALABAMA

The safety of BCG vaccination in cattle: results from good laboratory practice safety studies in calves and lactating cows.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a global disease of livestock that has damaging economic, animal health and public health consequences. Conventional bTB disease control strategies, based around the testing and slaughter of cattle infected with bTB, are typically used to help limit or reduce the transmission of this disease but in many low- and middle-income countries such strategies may often be economically unviable, culturally unacceptable or logistically impracticable. The use of vaccination to protect cattle against bTB could provide a potentially more affordable, ethically acceptable and pra

Strategies to Support LGBTQ+ Students in High Schools: What Did We Learn in Chicago Public Schools?

In 2013, the Chicago Public Schools district received funding from the Division of Adolescent and School Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to implement a series of strategies aimed to reduce HIV, STIs (sexually transmitted diseases), and related risk behaviors among students. One such set of strategies included "safe and supportive environments" (SSE), aimed to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and other LGBTQ+ students. SSE strategies included professional development and technical assistance provided to K-12 school staff (teachers, adminis

Practical inter-sectoral linking: Tool to rabies One Health coordination to the grass-roots level.

Rabies is an endemic disease in the Philippines. Addressing the disease at source, massive efforts towards dog vaccination and public awareness on rabies have been pursued by various Local Government Units (LGUs) in the country. While marked improvements have been seen, rabies continues to persist where it exists, largely owing to poor surveillance of the disease in animals and weak coordination between the human and animal health sectors. To bridge these critical gaps, the BAI-OIE STANDZ Rabies Project in the Philippines, together with the key rabies stakeholders in Bicol Region, developed th

Montelukast for the high impact of asthma exacerbations in Venezuela: a practical and valid approach for Latin America?

BACKGROUND: Asthma affects mainly Venezuela's urban and poor majority. Exacerbations bring about a high demand in health services, thus becoming a significant public health problem. In general, asthma control programs (GINA) with use of inhaled steroid medications have proven effective, although their implementation in real life remains cumbersome. Montelukast could be a useful and practical tool for these deprived socioeconomic sectors. METHODS: This real-life pilot study was conducted in a prospective, double blinded, placebo-controlled manner with randomized and parallel groups. Asthmatics

Pharmacy clerks' prescribing practices for STD patients in Porto Alegre, Brazil: missed opportunities for improving STD control.

STDs are a significant public health problem in Brazil. A primary control strategy is the immediate treatment of symptomatic individuals. When services are unavailable, STD patients seek care in alternative settings. Probably the most frequently used settings are commercial pharmacies, where pharmacy clerks provide treatment, although Brazilian law prohibits selling antibiotics without prescription. Our objective was to evaluate prescribing practices by pharmacy clerks for STDs. We performed a cross-sectional study. Trained medical students visited 62 pharmacies in the city of Porto Alegre dur

Food literacy assessment tools for adults: a scoping review of dimensional evolution, cultural adaptation, and potential implications for nursing-related practice.

INTRODUCTION: An unhealthy diet is a major modifiable risk factor for non-communicable diseases. Higher levels of food literacy facilitate the adoption of healthy dietary behaviours; therefore, the development and validation of assessment tools are crucial for public health and clinical practice. However, existing assessment tools are fragmented, and there is a lack of systematic analysis regarding dimensional evolution, cross-cultural adaptation, and practical implementation pathways. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This scoping review employed the Arksey and O'Malley framework along with PRISMA-ScR

Bridging the Gap Between Awareness and Practice in Breast Cancer Screening: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer is the most prevalent malignancy among women worldwide and a major public health concern. Early detection through screening methods such as breast self-examination, clinical breast examination, and mammography is associated with improved prognosis and reduced mortality. However, adherence to screening recommendations remains suboptimal and is influenced by multiple sociodemographic and psychosocial factors. AIMS: This study aimed to assess women's knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding breast cancer screening and to identify factors associated with

Changes in U.S. Healthcare Provider Practices Related to Emergency Contraception.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency contraception (EC), including EC pills (ECPs) and the copper intrauterine device, can prevent pregnancy after sexual encounters in which contraception was not used or used incorrectly. The U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use (U.S. SPR), initially released in 2013, provides evidence-based clinical recommendations on the provision of EC. The objective of this analysis was to assess the percentage of health care providers reporting frequent provision of select EC practices around the time of and after the release of the U.S. SPR. METHODS: We condu

International standards and safety protocols for gluten-free food: providing protection for people with gluten related disorders and learning from successful practices in countries worldwide.

Gluten labeling is critical for the protection of the health of people with celiac disease (CD), guaranteeing access to safe food. However, global regulations on food labeling vary widely, including differences in the criteria for considering a product "gluten-free," allowable gluten limits (usually 10 or 20 ppm) and requirements to prevent cross-contamination. This lack of uniformity can create challenges for consumers and industry, especially in international trade. Some countries, such as those from the European Union and the United States, have adopted more rigorous legislation, with clear
