Albinism is a pigment disorder affecting eye, skin and/or hair. Patients usually have decreased melanin in affected tissues and suffer from severe visual abnormalities, including foveal hypoplasia and chiasmal misrouting. Combining our data with those of the literature, we propose a single functional genetic retinal signalling pathway that includes all 22 currently known human albinism disease genes. We hypothesise that defects affecting the genesis or function of different intra-cellular organelles, including melanosomes, cause syndromic forms of albinism (Hermansky-Pudlak (HPS) and Chediak-H…

Uveal coloboma is a condition defined by missing ocular tissues and is a significant cause of childhood blindness. It occurs from a failure of the optic fissure to close during embryonic development and may lead to missing parts of the iris, ciliary body, retina, choroid, and optic nerve. Because there is no treatment for coloboma, efforts have focused on prevention. While several genetic causes of coloboma have been identified, little definitive research exists regarding the environmental causes of this condition. We review the current literature on environmental factors associated with colob…

Hematological diseases can lead to ocular manifestations. Retinal manifestation occurs in patients with anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloproliferative and myelodysplastic syndromes. It is not uncommon for the ocular findings to be the first manifestation of the systemic disease. In these patients the correct diagnosis can be difficult because as a rule the retinal involvement is unspecific. In cases of unexplained retinal changes with hemorrhage and cotton wool spots, an underlying hematological disease should be suspected and the appropriate diagnostics should be recommended.

In anomalous retinal correspondence (ARC), retinal points in the right and left eyes which receive stimuli from one object in space have the same visual direction despite a manifest motor deviation. The mode of cooperation of these anomalously corresponding retinal points depends on their relative eccentricity or their relative functional level. If there is a great difference, as for the most part in large angle strabismus, the retinal point with less eccentricity and better resolution will prevail, while the other will be suppressed. This leads to a second area of high resolution in the binoc…
