3D morphable systems via deterministic microfolding for vibrational sensing, robotic implants, and reconfigurable telecommunication.

DNA and proteins fold in three dimensions (3D) to enable functions that sustain life. Emulation of such folding schemes for functional materials can unleash enormous potential in advancing a wide range of technologies, especially in robotics, medicine, and telecommunication. Here, we report a microfolding strategy that enables formation of 3D morphable microelectronic systems integrated with various functional materials, including monocrystalline silicon, metallic nanomembranes, and polymers. By predesigning folding hosts and configuring folding pathways, 3D microelectronic systems in freestan…

First case report of fully robotically assisted lithotripsy in heavily calcified left main stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is the standard-of-care treatment for left main stenosis as an alternative to bypass surgery. In addition, severe coronary lesion calcification can be modified by intravascular lithotripsy (IVL). However, with PCI and debulking treatment options, there are inherent limitations. PCI poses an increased health burden for the treating physician that is associated with wearing a heavy, lead-lined apron and being exposed to radiation. To overcome these issues, a robotically assisted angioplasty system (rPCI) was established that enables the operat

A large intrathoracic goiter with tracheal stenosis: Complete resection using a robot-assisted thoracoscopic approach.

Growing intrathoracic goiters may compress surrounding organs and deteriorate the cardiopulmonary function. Treating such cases requires carefully considering how to maintain oxygenation and resect the tumor with minimal invasiveness without complications. We herein report a surgically resected case of a large intrathoracic goiter-compressed trachea extending from the right lower pole of the thyroid gland to the carina. We secured the airway by intubation preparing for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and successfully performed surgical complete resection using a robot-assisted thoracoscopi

A Trajectory Tracking Control Based on a Terminal Sliding Mode for a Compliant Robot with Nonlinear Stiffness Joints.

A nonlinear stiffness actuator (NSA) can achieve high torque/force resolution in the low stiffness range and high bandwidth in the high stiffness range. However, for the NSA, due to the imperfect performance of the elastic mechanical component such as friction, hysteresis, and unmeasurable energy consumption caused by former factors, it is more difficult to achieve accurate position control compared to the rigid actuator. Moreover, for a compliant robot with multiple degree of freedoms (DOFs) driven by NSAs, the influence of every NSA on the trajectory of the end effector is different and even

A cable driven robotic palpation system with contact force sensing based on cable tension observation.

BACKGROUND: Prostate Cancer screening based on manual palpation is subjective. Robotic palpation systems can objectively acquire stiffness conditions of the prostate. METHODS: A 2DoF cable driven robotic system for prostate palpation is proposed. An indirect method to estimate the contact force based on cable tension observation is presented. Kinematic models and a joint angle estimation method to determine the tip position of the probe are derived. Positioning accuracy was verified using an optical marker tracking system and by displacement measurement, respectively. The contact force estima

Method to Develop Legs for Underwater Robots: From Multibody Dynamics with Experimental Data to Mechatronic Implementation.

Exploration of the seabed may be complex, and different parameters must be considered for a robotic system to achieve tasks in this environment, such as soil characteristics, seabed gait, and hydrodynamic force in this extreme environment. This paper presents a gait simulation of a quadrupedal robot used on a typical terrigenous sediment seabed, considering the mechanical properties of the type of soil, stiffness, and damping and friction coefficients, referenced with the specialized literature and applied in a computational multibody model with many experimental data in a specific underwater

Design and torque control base on neural network PID of a variable stiffness joint for rehabilitation robot.

Variable stiffness joints have been gradually applied in rehabilitation robots because of their intrinsic compliance and greater ability to adjust mechanical stiffness. This paper designs a variable stiffness joint for upper limb rehabilitation training. The joint adopts the variable stiffness principle based special curved surface. The trapezoidal lead screw in the variable stiffness module has a self-locking function, and the stiffness can be maintained without the continuous output torque of the motor. In the aspect of control, back propagation (BP) neural network PID control strategy is us

Robotic-assisted thoracoscopic resection of anterior mediastinal cystic teratoma: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Mediastinal teratomas are rare tumors that frequently occur in the anterior mediastinum. The majority of these tumors are benign and slow growing. Due to their low malignant potential, the treatment for these tumors is surgical resection. More recently, the surgical management has shifted from invasive approaches such as a sternotomy to minimally invasive ones such as robotic-assisted thoracoscopic resections utilizing lung isolation ventilation. We present a rare case of a locally advanced mediastinal teratoma requiring resection, which was initially attempted thoracoscopically us

Robotic resection of ectopic mediastinal parathyroid adenoma with intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary hyperparathyroidism is a disease caused by the secretion of excess parathyroid hormone (PTH) owing to the enlargement of the parathyroid gland. Ectopic parathyroid glands exist in the mediastinum in approximately 1-2% of cases, which is relatively rare. Intraoperative monitoring of serum PTH level is important to assess whether the source of hyperparathyroidism has been eliminated. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old asymptomatic woman was diagnosed with ectopic mediastinal parathyroid adenoma. A three-port robotic partial resection of the thymus containing the tumor was atte

Force and Velocity Based Puncture Detection in Robot Assisted Retinal Vein Cannulation: In-Vivo Study.

OBJECTIVE: Retinal vein cannulation is a technically demanding surgical procedure and its feasibility may rely on using advanced surgical robots equipped with force-sensing microneedles. Reliable detection of the moment of venous puncture is important, to either alert or prevent the clinician from double puncturing the vessel and damaging the retinal surface beneath. This paper reports the first in-vivo retinal vein cannulation trial on rabbit eyes, using sensorized metal needles, and investigates puncture detection. METHODS: We utilized total of four indices including two previously demonstr

Robotic Left Hepatectomy using Indocyanine Green Fluorescence Imaging for an Intrahepatic Complex Biliary Cyst.

Biliary cysts (BC) are rare congenital dilatations of intra- and extrahepatic parts of the biliary tract and bear a significant risk of carcinogenesis. Surgery is the cornerstone treatment for patients with BC. While total BC excision and Roux-Y hepaticojejunostomy is the treatment method of the choice in patients with extrahepatic BC (i.e., Todani I-IV), patients with intrahepatic BC (i.e., Todani V) benefit the most from a surgical liver resection. In recent years, minimally invasive liver surgery (MILS) including robotic MILS has gained more acceptance as a feasible, safe, and effective pro

Non-robotic minimally invasive mitral valve repair: a 20-year single-centre experience.

OBJECTIVES: Minimally invasive mitral valve repair (MVR) promises major advantages over median sternotomy regarding cosmetic results and faster recovery. However, the long-term functional outcome of minimally invasive MVR has been questioned by critics because the limited access may not exclusively promise high-quality repair. This study examines the long-term outcome regarding survival and reoperation rate. METHODS: All patients undergoing minimally invasive MVR from February 2000 until March 2020 were included in this study. Baseline clinical and surgical characteristics were summarized fro
