Infection of Lymnaea truncatula and Lymnaea glabra by Fasciola hepatica and Paramphistomum daubneyi in farms of central France.

Natural infection of Lymnaea glabra and Lymnaea truncatula by Fasciola hepatica and/or Paramphistomum daubneyi was studied at two periods of risk (June-July and September-October) in 11 French farms known for their high prevalences of F. hepatica infection in ruminants. A total of 1,778 L. truncatula and 2,396 L. glabra measuring 6 mm or more in height were collected to determine the prevalence of natural infection with F. hepatica and P. daubneyi. The role of four factors, i.e. season, snail co-infection (F. hepatica-P. daubneyi), ruminant host and the existence of single or mixed intermediat…

Rumen motility during induced hyper- and hypocalcaemia.

Rumen motility was recorded on an experimental cow by means of telemetric signal transfer from strain gauge force transducers fixed surgically on the peritoneal surface of the rumen wall in the left flank. The normocalcaemic cow was given a standard milk fever treatment with calcium borogluconate (400 ml with 14 mg Ca/ml) intravenously. Transient clinical signs were: decreased rumination, muscle ticks, salivation and a heart rate reduction of 20%. Rectal temperature remained unaltered. Frequency of rumen contractions was reduced up to 40% whereas amplitude of contractions did not deviate from

Effects of replacing forage fiber or nonfiber carbohydrates with dried brewers grains.

Four primiparous Holstein cows in late lactation were used in a 4 x 5 Youden square design. Each cow was fitted with ruminal, duodenal, and ileal cannulas. Treatments were a control diet with a high concentration of forage, a control diet with a low concentration of forage, and three diets in which dried brewers grains replaced a portion of the forage, concentrate, or both. Cows were fed and milked twice daily in 14-d periods. Chromic oxide and Yb (soaked in acid) were used as markers for digesta flow and rate of passage, respectively. No significant differences in ruminal pH or rates of passa

Growth, health, and blood glucose concentrations of calves fed high-glucose or high-fat milk replacers.

The influence of age, carbohydrate-fat ratios of milk replacers, and development of ruminal function on growth, health, and blood glucose concentrations were evaluated in calves. Colostrum-fed, 3-day-old Holstein bull calves were fed to 12 wk on one of three dietary treatments: 1) a high carbohydrate, low fat (60.5% glucose, 9.5% lactose, and 3% lard) milk replacer; 2) a low carbohydrate, high fat (23% glucose, 12.5% lactose, and 30% lard) milk replacer; and 3) weaning at 6 wk of age from high-fat replacer to a standard calf starter. The high fat milk replacer was superior to low fat milk repl

Behavioral and electrophysiological evidence of reward processing deficits in repetitive negative thinking: Implications for depression.

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia and rumination, a form of repetitive negative thinking (RNT), are key features of depression associated with poor treatment outcomes, chronic disease progression, and an increased risk of suicidality. Although their interaction is thought to sustain depressive states, the state-level mechanisms linking these symptoms remain poorly understood. METHODS: In this multilevel, randomized within-subjects study, 62 individuals (n = 38 females) with varying levels of depressive symptoms completed the Probabilistic Reward Task (PRT) under two conditions: experimentally induced RNT

Making Sense of Bullying: Brooding and subsequent sleep problems in seemingly safe work environments.

BACKGROUND: Work and sleep mutually influence one another: adequate sleep supports cognitive functioning and social regulation at work, whereas safe and respectful working conditions facilitate recovery and sleep. Although workplace bullying has been proposed as an important work-related determinant of sleep problems, the empirical base has been dominated by cross-sectional research, with comparatively few longitudinal studies. Furthermore, the mechanisms underlying this association, as well as the potential reverse association, remain poorly understood. METHODS: Using a large longitudinal nat

Bluetongue virus: current perspectives on characterisation and the need to formalise nomenclature in an era of rapidly evolving technology.

Bluetongue virus (BTV) is a complex, transboundary arboviral pathogen that circulates globally in ruminant populations. Bluetongue disease is a World Organisation for Animal Health listed disease affecting economically important farmed ruminants. BTV is a dsRNA virus from the Sedoreoviridae family that has a segmented genome. Classification of BTV traditionally focussed on antigenic characteristics. More recently, however, Sanger sequencing methods have been adopted for typing based on specific genome segment analysis and targeted whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is being more widely applied. Des…

Characterization of a composite with enhanced attraction to savannah tsetse flies from constituents or analogues of tsetse refractory waterbuck (Kobus defassa) body odor.

Savannah tsetse flies avoid flying toward tsetse fly-refractory waterbuck (Kobus defassa) mediated by a repellent blend of volatile compounds in their body odor comprised of δ-octalactone, geranyl acetone, phenols (guaiacol and carvacrol), and homologues of carboxylic acids (C5-C10) and 2-alkanones (C8-C13). However, although the blends of carboxylic acids and that of 2-alkanones contributed incrementally to the repellency of the waterbuck odor to savannah tsetse flies, some waterbuck constituents (particularly, nonanoic acid and 2-nonanone) showed significant attractive properties. In another

The Interplay between Bluetongue Virus Infections and Adaptive Immunity.

Viral infections have long provided a platform to understand the workings of immunity. For instance, great strides towards defining basic im … bluetongue virus (BTV), an economically important arbovirus from the Reoviridae family that affects ruminants, affects adaptive immunity in the natural hosts. During the initial stages of infection, BTV triggers leucopenia in the hosts. The host then mounts an adaptive immune response that controls the disease. In this work, we discuss how BTV triggers CD8+ …

Sex differences in the etiology of disgust sensitivity: A preliminary behavioral genetic analysis.

Evidence suggests that Disgust Sensitivity (DS) is a personality trait that may confer risk for the development of some anxiety-related disorders. To examine the origins of this trait we administered the DS subscale of the Disgust Propensity and Sensitivity Scale-Revised to 90 monozygotic and 90 dizygotic twin pairs, of which 55% were women. The DS subscale consists of two dimensions; Somatic Disgust and Ruminative Disgust. Biometrical modeling techniques were used to estimate heritability of the DS dimensions by sex. For women, each dimension was influenced by a combination of genetic and env

Examining the Relationships Among Self-Compassion, Social Anxiety, and Post-Event Processing.

Post-event processing refers to negative and repetitive thinking following anxiety provoking social situations. Those who engage in post-event processing may lack self-compassion in relation to social situations. As such, the primary aim of this research was to evaluate whether those high in self-compassion are less likely to engage in post-event processing and the specific self-compassion domains that may be most protective. In study 1 ( N = 156 undergraduate students) and study 2 ( N = 150 individuals seeking help for social anxiety and shyness), participants completed a battery of questionn

Understanding Haemonchus contortus Better Through Genomics and Transcriptomics.

Parasitic roundworms (nematodes) cause substantial mortality and morbidity in animals globally. The barber's pole worm, Haemonchus contortus, is one of the most economically significant parasitic nematodes of small ruminants worldwide. Although this and related nematodes can be controlled relatively well using anthelmintics, resistance against most drugs in common use has become a major problem. Until recently, almost nothing was known about the molecular biology of H. contortus on a global scale. This chapter gives a brief background on H. contortus and haemonchosis, immune responses, vaccine…

A growing degree-day model for determination of Fasciola hepatica infection risk in New Zealand with future predictions using climate change models.

Infections of ruminants with Fasciola hepatica are considered to be of regional importance within New Zealand but there is very little recent information on its prevalence or severity other than anecdotal reports. Generally they are considered to be of secondary importance compared to gastrointestinal nematode infections. Utilizing data from Virtual Climate Stations (n=11491) distributed on a 5km grid around New Zealand a growing degree-day model was used to describe the risk of infection with liver fluke from 1972 to 2012 and then to apply the predictions to estimate the risk of fluke infecti…
