Assessing environmental factors associated with regional schistosomiasis prevalence in Anhui Province, Peoples' Republic of China using a geographical detector method.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a water-borne disease caused by trematode worms belonging to genus Schistosoma, which is prevalent most of the developing world. Transmission of the disease is usually associated with multiple biological characteristics and social factors but also factors can play a role. Few studies have assessed the exact and interactive influence of each factor promoting schistosomiasis transmission. METHODS: We used a series of different detectors (i.e., specific detector, risk detector, ecological detector and interaction detector) to evaluate separate and interactive effec

Bridging Biology and Society: Molecular Insights into Social Determinants of Vascular Disease.

BACKGROUND: Vascular diseases (VDs)-such as arterial aneurysms, chronic venous disease, and peripheral artery disease-are influenced by a complex interplay of genetic, biological, and social factors. Integrating the assessment of both molecular and social determinants offers a novel framework that connects factors like socioeconomic status, chronic stress, and environmental exposures to the molecular pathways that drive vascular pathophysiology. METHODS: This review was conducted searching libraries such as Web of Science, Scopus, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar. The aim was to facilitate the ana

The effects of maternal SSRI exposure on the serotonin system, prefrontal protein expression and behavioral development in male and female offspring rats.

Fluoxetine (FLX), a commonly used selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, is often used to treat depression during pregnancy. However, prena … exposed mothers showed delayed physical development, increased anxiety-like behavior, and impaired social interaction. Moreover, down-regulation of 5-HT and SERT expression were identified in the PFC. We also found that prenatal FLX exposure significantly decreased NAA/tCr with 1H-MRS in the PFC of offspring. Finally, a proteomic study revealed sex-dependent differ …

Effects of aerobic exercise on cardiorespiratory fitness and social functioning in veterans 40 to 65 years old with schizophrenia.

The usual physical activity level of people with chronic histories of schizophrenia is very low. In this pilot study, we examined the effects of an easy to implement aerobic exercise (AE) program on cardiorespiratory fitness and social functioning in 54 Veterans aged 40-65 years old with schizophrenia. Participants were randomized 2:1 to AE (36 forty-minute sessions conducted 3 times per week over 12 weeks) versus a non-aerobic stretching exercise condition conducted under the same regimen and timeframe. Cardiorespiratory fitness improved significantly within the AE group (p<.0001), and differ

Effects of temperature increase on the physiology and behavior of fiddler crabs.

Intertidal organisms rely on physiological and behavioral adjustments to maintain homeostasis under warm exposure. We examined the effects o … warmer temperatures increase the duration of burrow retreat in both species, potentially impacting social interactions, such as mating. Temperature increase did not affect the claw-waving display frequency, suggesting that other factors may affect this behavior, e.g., the presence of females and competitors. Specific behavioral (e.g., microhabitat selection) and mo …

Implications of spatial patterns of roosting and movements of American robins for West Nile virus transmission.

The arrival of West Nile virus (WNV) in North America has led to interest in the interaction between birds, the amplification hosts of WNV, and Culex mosquitoes, the primary WNV vectors. American robins (Turdus migratorius) are particularly important amplification hosts of WNV, and because the vector Culex mosquitoes are primarily nocturnal and feed on roosting birds, robin communal roosting behavior may play an important role in the transmission ecology of WNV. Using data from 43 radio-tracked individuals, we determined spatial and temporal patterns of robin roosting behavior, and how these p

[Behavioral Features and Neural Basis of Vocal Communication in Mice].

Mice use ultrasonic vocalizations beyond the range of human hearing to achieve social communication. This review summarizes the behavioral features of mouse ultrasonic vocalizations, including pup calls, male courtship vocalizations, and vocalizations emitted during female-female and male-male interactions. It also compares mouse vocalizations with rat ultrasonic calls and bird songs. Finally, this review discusses male courtship vocalizations as an index of sexual motivation and emotional expression, and outlines their neuroendocrine regulation through sex hormones and neural circuits centere

Early Onset Parkinson's Disease and Sleep Dysfunction.

Sleep dysfunction is a significant component of the non-motor symptom profile in Parkinson's disease (PD). Patients with early onset PD (EOPD) are a unique challenge and may present with specific patterns of sleep disturbances, which tend to be related to the underlying genetic causes. Furthermore, owing to the younger age of patients with EOPD, sleep disturbances significantly impact multiple domains including employment, ability to drive, social interactions, caregiver burden, and so forth. Care should be taken in obtaining adequate history and investigating appropriately to identify these i…

[Medical treatment of cancer in the elderly].

Paralleling increasing life expectancy, the number of cases of cancer in our population is also on the increase. The question as to whether chemotherapy for the treatment of a tumor in the elderly is appropriate or not, and if so what doses are required, depends in particular on the potentially increased toxicity of the drug in the old patient. The consequence is that alternative substances may have to be sought. When planning treatment, however, additional factors have to be taken into account, such as the possibility of differences in the physiology of the tumor in the elderly, the general s

The Relationship Between Psychopathy and Violence: A Comparison Across Birth Cohorts.

The current study responds to calls to consider whether individual characteristics (e.g., psychopathy) interact with broader structural conditions (e.g., economic, social, and legal contexts) in ways that influence offending. We examined whether the psychopathy-violence relationship varies across birth cohorts. Data came from 535 male and female participants from the Incarcerated Serious and Violent Young Offender Study who were interviewed in adolescence and received a rating on the Psychopathy Checklist: Youth Version (PCL:YV). Participants were born between 1979 and 1997 and were followed i

Structural Vulnerability and Police Interaction among Women Who Use Drugs amid De Facto Decriminalization in Baltimore, Maryland.

Exposure to criminal-legal systems, including policing, arrest, and incarceration, has deleterious effects on access to health and social services among people who use drugs. Women who use drugs (WWUD) may be especially vulnerable to policing, due to the high prevalence of sex work among them, which is also a criminalized behavior. Recent epidemiologic events and policy reforms are thought to have reduced exposure to arrests for low-level, non-violent crimes; in Baltimore City, this decline was demonstrated following the COVID-19 pandemic and implementation of de facto decriminalization of mis

Instrumental Reminiscence and Coping Strategies in Older Adults Exposed to Armed Conflict in Colombia.

Older adults exposed to prolonged sociopolitical violence often experience chronic stress that may undermine adaptive coping processes. Instrumental reminiscence, which focuses on recalling past experiences of successfully managing adversity, has been proposed as a strategy potentially associated with greater coping flexibility in later life. This study examined whether participation in an instrumental reminiscence programme was associated with changes in coping strategies among older adults registered as victims of armed conflict in Catatumbo, Colombia. A quasi-experimental controlled design

Human-like, Animal-like, or Object-like? The Impact of LLM-Based Virtual Doctor Avatar Design on User Emotion, Physiology, and Experience.

Virtual agents powered by large language models are increasingly deployed in digital mental health services, yet the influence of avatar appearance on users' emotional, cognitive, and physiological responses remains insufficiently understood. This study was conducted between March and April 2024 and examined how three avatar designs-animal-like, human-like, and object-like-shape affective experience, user evaluation, autonomic activity, and attentional allocation during virtual doctor interactions. Forty-two participants completed a within-subjects experiment involving self-reported affect rat

Reframing Rehabilitation Retention in Long-Term Conditions: A Theory-Informed Mini-Review of Psychological Adaptation and Engagement.

Rehabilitation in long-term conditions requires not only clinical capacity but also sustained patient engagement, yet retention is commonly reduced to crude completion metrics. This theory-informed conceptual mini-review used a purposive, non-systematic synthesis of literature identified from the authors' existing knowledge base, targeted PubMed/MEDLINE searches last updated on 9 August 2026, and backward reference checking; the final article cites 76 sources. Retention is reframed as six related phases comprising referral and eligibility, uptake or initiation, early attendance, ongoing attend

A web of risk: multilevel factors and feedback loops (re)produce HIV 'risk' among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men - a global systematic review.

BACKGROUND: HIV literature shows that gay, bisexual and men who have sex with other men (GBMSM) experience inequities across social and contextual factors. Given growing inequities, this study used complex systems theory, a scientific approach to understanding the interconnected parts, to identify and visualise the system of factors that shape the emergence or (re)production of HIV risk among GBMSM. METHODS: A meta-synthesis of systematic reviews and meta-analyses was conducted to examine risk factors for HIV in alignment with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Anal

Perspectives of cardiac care providers on the continuum of care among women with cardiovascular disease in a tertiary care hospital of South India.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of mortality among women, and the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted healthcare continuity. This research explores healthcare providers' (HCPs) perspectives on challenges in providing cardiac care to women during the pandemic. METHODS: A qualitative inquiry was conducted through in-depth interviews among 11 HCPs at a tertiary care hospital in South India. RESULTS: The thematic analysis revealed several concepts. Women with CVD were less health literate and often presented late. They relied on family support for care continuity. Family deci

A Theory of Cuteness as Developmental Investment.

What is the evolutionary function of cuteness? Research on cuteness originated with the study of juvenile morphology following Lorenz's Kindchenschema proposal, which identified specific cues of juvenility that reliably elicit a distinctive affective response. Because juvenile cues activate protective responses typically associated with vulnerability and distress (e.g., compassion, harm avoidance), cuteness has often been interpreted as an emotion whose primary function is protection. However, this leaves a key pattern unexplained: children are perceived as cutest not when they are helpless, b
