Divorce transition differences of midlife women.

Divorce transition experienced by and its influence upon midlife women's health is not fully understood. Interviews were conducted with 24 divorced women who self-classified into decider status groups: initiator (who first decided to end marriage), non-initiator (recipient of end of marriage decision), and mutual decider (shared decision to end marriage). Interpretive content analysis involving pattern coding was conducted. The divorce transition by initiators (n=8) included self-focused growth, optimism, and social support losses and opportunities, while the divorce transition by non-initiato

Strengthening sociometric prediction: scientific advances in the assessment of children's peer relations.

This study assessed the strength of sociometric classification in the prediction of concurrent sociobehavioral adjustment. Differential adjustment for subgroups of unclassified children were also examined. Participants were 881 fifth graders (ages 9 to 12). Classification strength (CS) and unclassified subgroups were determined through newly developed algorithms. CS added significantly to the prediction of all areas of adjustment. For example, highly rejected children were at extreme risk for victimization whereas highly controversial children were most likely to be bullies and relationally ag

Relationships between esophageal speech proficiency and surgical, biographical, and social factors.

The relationship between judged esophageal speech proficiency and detailed medical/surgical, biographical, and social factors was investigated among a large sample of alaryngeal speakers. The data suggested that more extensive surgery such as radical neck dissection did not lessen the subjects' ability to learn esophageal speech. Surprisingly, subjects who had undergone radical neck surgery had better voices in many cases than those who had undergone only a simple laryngectomy. Educational level, socioeconomic status, length of time spent in speech therapy, and the number of years since surger

Homo Memorabiliaxis: Souvenirs and the Evolution of Autobiographical Memory and Self.

Humans routinely keep souvenirs objects retained for the memories they evoke, yet the evolutionary and cognitive consequences of mnemonic collecting remain unclear. Existing discussions of curated objects concentrate on later prehistory and modern humans and view such objects at the social level, as carriers of shared cultural meaning or as markers of status. Here, we address an earlier time period and locate the phenomenon at the personal rather than the social level. By integrating archaeology with theories of extended memory and niche construction, we synthesize evidence consistent with sys

Family and community pressure, obesity-related behaviours, and psychological wellbeing among female adolescents with overweight or obesity: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent obesity has physical, psychological and social consequences. Family and community influences can be important in determining the eating behaviour, body image and emotional health of adolescents. Few qualitative studies have investigated female adolescents' own perception of family and community related pressure around their weight. METHODS: This qualitative exploratory study used semi-structured interviews to investigate these experiences among 30 female adolescents aged 12-19 years (mean 16.3 years) with overweight or obesity. Weight status was classified against the W

Bullying, minority stress and revenge impulse among autistic college students: group differences by sexual and gender minority status.

This study examines how bullying experiences are associated with retaliatory impulses among autistic university students, highlighting minority stress as a key mediating mechanism and sexual and gender minority (SGM) status as a moderating condition within an intersectional framework. Guided by Minority Stress Theory and Social Information Processing Theory, we surveyed 280 autistic undergraduates; 35% identified as SGM. Participants completed validated measures of bullying, minority stress, retaliatory impulse, and related psychosocial factors. Structural equation modeling and multi-group ana

The association between perceived neighborhood social cohesion and incident hypertension among older adults in the US Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the association between lower perceived neighborhood social cohesion (PNSC) and higher risk of hypertension, there is limited research on this relationship. This population-based study examined the association between PNSC and incident hypertension among a nationally representative population of older adults across racial and/or ethnic groups and sex. METHODS: Data were obtained from 2,998 US older adult participants (mean age=62.5 years, SD=8.12) from the Health and Retirement Study. Normotensive participants at baseline (2006 or 2008) were assessed for hypertension incid

Stimulant use and increased severity of opioid use disorder and mental illness in patients with co-occurring disorders.

BACKGROUND: Among individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) and co-occurring mental illness, stimulant co-use may be associated with more severe symptoms and less treatment utilization. We sought to understand the association of stimulant use with social needs and OUD and mental illness severity and treatment. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used baseline data from a randomized controlled trial of collaborative care for primary care patients with OUD and co-occurring depression and/or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We categorized stimulant use (cocaine/methamphetamine) into daily

An examination of multiple illness and social related stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal and child mental health; findings from a birth cohort in rural Pakistan.

PURPOSE: In an effort to improve preparation for future pandemics, researchers continue to examine the myriad psychosocial pathways through which the COVID-19 pandemic impacted mental health. Moving beyond extant research on factors such as financial difficulties or social isolation, we present findings on two less documented pathways: (a) COVID illness and death within one's social network and (b) experiencing pandemic-related basic needs stressors, beyond financial difficulties, on the mental health of mothers and children in South Asia. METHODS: Data come from the 2021-2022 wave of the Bac

A Narrative Review of Neurodevelopmental, Psychiatric, and Behavioral Consequences of Preterm Birth.

Preterm infants survive into adulthood. However, this survival often comes with increased health and social challenges during adolescence and adulthood, including medical disabilities, learning difficulties, and behavioral and psychological issues. Understanding the long-term outcomes of preterm birth is crucial for developing prevention and treatment strategies, as well as setting future research priorities. Research in this area can be complex due to the need for long follow-up periods and changes in the classification of diseases and outcomes over time, which make it challenging to establis

Correlates of post-traumatic growth among persons bereaved from cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent research identified that cancer bereavement can lead to post-traumatic growth (PTG). Although PTG and its correlates are well explored in cancer patients and survivors, persons bereaved from cancer have received scant attention. Therefore, the present review attempts to identify the correlates of PTG among persons bereaved from cancer. METHODS: A systematic search in PubMed, Web of Science, APA PsycNet, Science Direct, Scopus, and Wiley was conducted to identify quantitative studies published in English, resulting in 12 eligible reports being included in the final analysis.
