Using unconditioned responses to predict fear acquisition, fear extinction learning, and extinction retention patterns: Sex hormone status matters.

Following a traumatic event, fear dysregulation can increase the likelihood of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This psychopathology is twice as prevalent in women than in men. High physiological reactivity following trauma may be an early risk indicator for the development of PTSD. Elevated physiological reactivity and low estradiol levels have individually been associated with higher fear acquisition and/or lower extinction retention. Thus, sex hormone status may also modulate fear regulation abilities. However, it is unknown whether these two vulnerability factors interact

Children with sexual behavior problems: Ties to child maltreatment, family functioning, and help-seeking.

Although the literature on children's sexual behavior problems (SBPs) has indicated that maltreatment and family dysfunction are linked to SBPs, several facets of these factors have remained unexamined. Prior research has largely focused on SBPs more broadly, though interpersonal SBPs (ISBPs) are likely a distinct, more severe SBP subtype. The aim of the current study was to examine potentially relevant, unexplored factors, including the number of types of and total allegations of maltreatment as well as familial characteristics (i.e., parenting attitudes and behaviors, discipline methods, fam

Posttraumatic stress disorder in pediatric patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators and their parents.

BACKGROUND: An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) in the pediatric patient (and the precipitating events that led to ICD placement) can be traumatic for patients and their families and may lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of PTSD in pediatric patients with an ICD and their parents and identify the factors associated with PTSD incidence. METHODS: Pediatric participants with an ICD aged 8-21 years and parents of children aged 0-21 years completed surveys that included demographic characteristics and PTSD measures. P

Psychiatric reaction of an intensive care unit survivor in the context of coronavirus disease 2019: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has had a serious impact on global mental health, particularly in intensive care unit survivors. Given the lethal potential and unpredictability of coronavirus disease 2019, a high risk of posttraumatic stress disorder was identified in the beginning of the crisis. There are insufficient details in current literature and no official guidelines available for the treatment and follow-up of acute stress disorder and the prevention of posttraumatic stress disorder for intensive care unit survivors in the context of coronavirus disease 2019. Prospective longitudinal assessment of sensorimotor gating as a risk/resiliency factor for posttraumatic stress disorder.

Little is understood about cognitive mechanisms that confer risk and resiliency for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Prepulse Inhibition (PPI) is a measure of pre-attentional response inhibition that is a stable cognitive trait disrupted in many neuropsychiatric disorders characterized by poor behavioral or cognitive inhibition, including PTSD. Differentiating between PTSD-related phenotypes that are pre-existing factors vs. those that emerge specifically after trauma is critical to understanding PTSD etiology and can only be addressed by prospective studies. This study tested the hypothe

Adult Attachment as a Mediator of the Link Between Interpersonal Trauma and International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-11 Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms Among College Men and Women.

Previous research indicates that insecure attachment patterns are associated with interpersonal trauma and posttraumatic symptomatology, and that they mediate various trauma-related symptoms. However, no study to date has examined whether these patterns mediate the link between interpersonal trauma and the newly recognized diagnostic features of complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD), as published by the World Health Organization (2019) in the 11th version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). Mediators of CPTSD are important to identify because they can provide a de

Trajectories of Depression, Post-Traumatic Stress, and Chronic Pain Among Women Who Have Separated From an Abusive Partner: A Longitudinal Analysis.

This longitudinal study explored changes in women's health after separation from an abusive partner by characterizing the trajectories of their mental health (depression and post-traumatic stress disorder [PTSD]) and physical health (chronic pain) over a 4-year period. We examined how the severity of intimate partner violence (IPV) affected these trajectories, controlling for selected baseline factors using 5 waves of data collected from a community sample of 309 English-speaking, Canadian women. IPV severity was measured using the Index of Spouse Abuse where women were asked to consider the e

Virtually-delivered Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY) for Canadian veterans with PTSD: A study protocol for a nation-wide effectiveness and implementation evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remains a significant treatment challenge among Canadian veterans. Currently accessible pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for PTSD often do not lead to resolution of PTSD as a categorical diagnosis and have significant non-response rates. Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY), a complementary and integrative health (CIH) intervention, can improve symptoms of PTSD. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this intervention has pivoted to virtual delivery and may be reaching new sets of participants who face multiple barriers to care. OBJE

Testing Phenotypic Models of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Alcohol Use Disorder Comorbidity Using Longitudinal Registry Data.

OBJECTIVE: Two predominant phenotypic models of causality exist to explain the high co-occurrence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD): the self-medication and susceptibility models. Population-based longitudinal studies that simultaneously examine both models are needed. Thus, the goal of the present study is to test these models using the Swedish National Registries. METHOD: Registries were used to conduct longitudinal Cox proportional hazard models (n ≈ 1.5 million) and cross-lagged panel models (N ≈ 3.8 million) with follow-up periods of ~23 years. RESUL

Rumination, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms, and Posttraumatic Growth Among Wenchuan Earthquake Adult Survivors: A Developmental Perspective.

This study examined the long-term effects of the Wenchuan earthquake among adult survivors. Specifically, it explored the role of perceived social support (PSS) in the relationship between rumination and posttraumatic growth (PTG) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Data were collected from March to July 2020 using a youth survivor sample (n = 476) of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. Participants were divided into three groups depending on their age when the quake occurred: 6-11 years (n = 227), 12-15 years (n = 83), 16-19 years (n = 166). The results indicated that long-term PTG a

Understanding Mental Health Needs and Gathering Feedback on Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation as a Potential PTSD Treatment among 9/11 Responders Living with PTSD Symptoms 20 Years Later: A Qualitative Approach.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remains one of the most prevalent diagnoses of World Trade Center (WTC) 9/11 responders. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a potential treatment for PTSD, as it can downregulate activity in the brain, which is known to be related to stress responses and hyperarousal. To understand barriers and facilitators to engagement in mental health care and the feasibility and acceptability of using the taVNS device as a treatment for PTSD symptoms, a focus group was conducted among patients from the Queens WTC Health Program who had elevated

Sexual Violence in Military Service Members/Veterans Individual and Interpersonal Outcomes Associated with Single and Multiple Exposures to Civilian and Military Sexual Violence.

Sexual harassment and violence is a grave public health concern and risk for revictimization increases following initial exposure. Studies of sexual revictimization in military samples are generally limited to women and are focused on rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with no examination of how revictimization relates to interpersonal outcomes, such as relationship or sexual satisfaction. The current study addressed these gaps in a sample of 833 women and 556 men service members/veterans. Self-reported outcomes of PTSD, depression, suicidal ideation, sexual function, and relations

Examining the effectiveness of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy on children and adolescents' executive function.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents impacted by childhood trauma often demonstrate executive function difficulties, which negatively affect self-regulation and potentiate the risk for trauma-related psychopathology and functional impairment. Evidence-based treatments for traumatized youth such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) aim to equip youth directly with skills for effective self-regulation and may thus also improve executive function. Moreover, adolescence is a sensitive period for executive function development, and interventions aimed at improving executive funct
