This study examined the first-grade reading progress of children who participated in an intensive beginning reading intervention in kindergarten. The goal of this study is to define the long-term influence of vocal hygiene education and the effectiveness of voice training in 46 students. Half of the subjects, called the trained group (n = 23), received vocal hygiene education during 1 school year and voice training during 2 school years (18 months). BACKGROUND: Occupational voice health is becoming more important as more people rely on their voices for their work. A number of studies have identified certain occupational groups at increased risk of developing occupational voice disorders, namely teachers, singers and aerobics instructors. Sixty children with dyslexia (41 boys, 19 girls; ages 9 to 13) were enrolled in a 10-week summer tutoring program that emphasized word-building skills. Because serious nosocomial diseases can be transmitted by needlestick injuries, a retrospective review of needlestick injuries was conducted for a period of 2.5 years at a major university teaching hospital. The objective was to determine the needlestick injury rate among employees of the Department of Ophthalmology versus the other departments. Ophthalmologists had the highest incidence per person of needle injuries among physicians. Retina and strabismus surgeons were at higher risk than anterior segment surgeons.

Out of 100 teachers referred to a phoniatric department for dysphonia, we recorded 11 dysfunctional lesion-free dysphonias, 86 dysphonias with lesions, 3 post-surgical dysphonias, 76 patients referred for a dysphonia with a modification of the spoken voice, and only 3 for the singing voice. 96 suffered from vocal fatigue, and in the course of the clinical examination 85 patients presented a faulty vocal attitude.
