By avoiding thoracotomy, VATS is minimally invasive and allows shorter postoperative hospitalization. In the last 14 years (1978 to 1991) in the Clinic of Cardiovascular Surgery, University Hospital Zurich, 72 patients were operated due to obstruction of the subclavian artery. The left side was affected in 46/72 (63.9%), the right side in 21/72 (29.2%), both sides in 5/72 (6.9%) patients. Only thrombendarterectomy has been done in 48/72 (66.7%), followed by carotis-subclavian-bypass (9/72, 12.5%). We compared the results of 327 transthoracic (TT) resections and 82 transhiatal (TH) resections for carcinoma of the oesophagus operated on between July 1982 and June 1991. Significantly more patients with carcinoma of the lower third of the oesophagus (54% versus 28%) and with increased pulmonary risks for surgery (61% versus 22%) were selected for the TH approach as compared with the TT approach. UNLABELLED: Ninety-three cases of thoracic trauma (age ranging from 1.1/2 to 15 years) were observed over a 10 year-period (1980-1990): 86 cases of blunt trauma and 7 cases of perforating injuries. Road accidents were the most prevalent (63 cases) followed by home and sport injuries (9), falls (9), perforating trauma (9) and others.
