What costs are associated with the management of third molars?

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to estimate the treatment costs directly related to operative and nonoperative management of asymptomatic, disease-free, third molar (M3) teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data reviewed were limited to claims submitted by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The data collected included charges for consultations, radiographs, surgical removal of bony impacted teeth, and general anesthesia, using the 2009 data extracts from Delta Dental of Virginia. The median charges were used as a proxy for the actual costs attributable to the removal or retention of M3 teet

Risk assessment of inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle by multidetector computed tomography in extractions of third molars.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the reliability of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in determining the surgical risk of the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle in extractions of third molars. METHODS: The sample comprised thirty-three individuals (63 third molars) who underwent preoperative evaluation by MDCT before extraction of impacted mandibular third molars. MDCT was used to determine the relationship between the roots of the third molars and the mandibular canal, and the course of the mandibular canal. Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) exposure and the presence of hemorrhage

Prosthetic concerns about atrophic alveolar ridges.

Recently, research has provided much insight into the problem of residual ridge resorption. It has become clear that ridge maintenance and preservation dramatically improves the quality of restorative dentistry provided, in addition to lessening the complexity of the treatment plan for the dentist. This article discusses the concerns, difficulties, and prosthetic challenges that must be addressed when restoring a patient with residual ridge resorption to acceptable function and esthetics. While patients can expect to lose a significant portion of their residual ridge as a result of normal phys

Effectiveness of Photobiomodulation Versus Local Drug Delivery as an Adjunct to Non-surgical Periodontal Therapy in the Management of Periodontal Pockets: A Case Report.

Periodontitis, a bacterial infection leading to the destruction of tooth-supporting tissues, is primarily driven by elevated levels of subgingival microorganisms. Effective periodontal therapy aims to eliminate or reduce these pathogens to halt disease progression, prevent recurrence, and regenerate lost tissues. This case report evaluates the effectiveness of non-surgical therapies, specifically tetracycline fibers and photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), as adjuncts to scaling and root planing (SRP) in the treatment of periodontal disease using a split-mouth design. Mechanical SRP alone may no

The contribution and therapeutic implications of IGHMBP2 mutations on IGHMBP2 biochemical activity and ABT1 association.

Mutations within immunoglobulin mu DNA binding protein (IGHMBP2), an RNA-DNA helicase, result in SMA with respiratory distress type I (SMARD1) and Charcot Marie Tooth type 2S (CMT2S). The underlying biochemical mechanism of IGHMBP2 is unknown as well as the functional significance of IGHMBP2 mutations in disease severity. Here we report the biochemical mechanisms of IGHMBP2 disease-causing mutations D565N and H924Y, and their potential impact on therapeutic strategies. The IGHMBP2-D565N mutation has been identified in SMARD1 patients, while the IGHMBP2-H924Y mutation has been identified in CMT

The Quebec Dental Anomalies Registry: Identifying genes for rare disorders.

There are more than 900 genetic syndromes associated with oral manifestations. These syndromes can have serious health implications, and left undiagnosed, can hamper treatment and prognosis later in life. About 6.67% of the population will develop a rare disease during their lifetime, some of which are difficult to diagnose. The establishment of a data and tissue bank of rare diseases with oral manifestations in Quebec will help medical professionals identify the genes involved, will improve knowledge on the rare genetic diseases, and will also lead to improved patient management. It will also

Genetic insights into PHARC syndrome: identification of a novel frameshift mutation in ABHD12.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in ABHD12 (OMIM: 613,599) are associated with polyneuropathy, hearing loss, ataxia, retinitis pigmentosa, and cataract (PHARC) syndrome (OMIM: 612674), which is a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease. PHARC syndrome is easily misdiagnosed as other neurologic disorders, such as retinitis pigmentosa, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and Refsum disease, due to phenotype variability and slow progression. This paper presents a novel mutation in ABHD12 in two affected siblings with PHARC syndrome phenotypes. In addition, we summarize genotype-phenotype information of

The association of healthy eating index with periodontitis in NHANES 2013-2014.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is very common worldwide and is one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults. Periodontal disease is characterized by chronic inflammation that can destroy adjacent alveolar bone and lead to a loss of periodontal ligaments. Although previous studies have found that a daily diet can influence the development of periodontal disease (e.g., a diet low in carbohydrates and rich in vitamins C and D and fiber can have a protective effect). Periodontal disease may present as gingivitis or periodontitis. However, studies on the role of healthy eating index in periodont

Tongue diagnosis indices for upper gastrointestinal disorders: Protocol for a cross-sectional, case-controlled observational study.

BACKGROUND: Upper gastrointestinal disorders are common in clinical practice, for example, gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Panendoscopy or upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is viewed as the primary tool for examining the upper gastrointestinal mucosa, and permitting biopsy and endoscopic therapy. Although panendoscopy is considered to be a safe procedure with minimal complications, there are still some adverse effects, and patients are often anxious about undergoing invasive procedures. Traditional Chinese medicine tongue diagnosis plays an important role i

Exonic duplication CNV of NDRG1 associated with autosomal-recessive HMSN-Lom/CMT4D.

PURPOSE: Copy-number variations as a mutational mechanism contribute significantly to human disease. Approximately one-half of the patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease have a 1.4 Mb duplication copy-number variation as the cause of their neuropathy. However, non-CMT1A neuropathy patients rarely have causative copy-number variations, and to date, autosomal-recessive disease has not been associated with copy-number variation as a mutational mechanism. METHODS: We performed Agilent 8 × 60 K array comparative genomic hybridization on DNA from 12 recessive Turkish families with CMT dise

Hereditary Polyneuropathies in the Era of Precision Medicine: Genetic Complexity and Emerging Strategies.

Hereditary polyneuropathies represent a genetically and clinically heterogeneous group of disorders affecting the peripheral nervous system, characterized by progressive motor, sensory, and autonomic impairment. Advances in molecular genetics have identified key causative genes, including PMP22, MPZ, MFN2, TTR, EGR2, and CX32 (GJB1), which are implicated in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, Dejerine-Sottas syndrome, and related neuropathies. These conditions display substantial allelic and locus heterogeneity. Pathogenetically, mechanisms involve impaired myelin maintenance, disrupted axonal transp

Mitochondrial dysfunction, metabolic quiescence and premature senescence in CMT4B3 fibroblasts.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4B3 (CMT4B3) is an ultra-rare autosomal recessive neuropathy caused by mutations in the MTMR5/SBF1 gene. In this study, we characterized dermal fibroblasts derived from a patient carrying compound-heterozygous MTMR5/SBF1 variants (R763H/G1064E) and identified alterations affecting mitochondrial metabolism and cellular stress pathways. Patient fibroblasts exhibited fragmented mitochondrial networks with a shift toward fission, together with reduced ATP production, while mitochondrial mass, respiratory chain assembly, and markers of mitochondrial biogenesis were

Endodontic Diagnosis and Nonsurgical Management of a Maxillary Second Molar With Parastyle: Report of a Case With a 24-Month Follow-Up.

Parastyle is a rare dental morphological trait characterised by an accessory cusp or tubercle, often found unilaterally on the buccal surface of the mesiobuccal cusp, mainly in the second and third maxillary molars. Its size may range from a small enamel pit to an independent, well-developed cusp. When clinically present, parastyle may cause complications such as dental caries and sensitivity, localised periodontal disease and occlusal interference. This uncommon anatomical feature may further predispose to diagnostic and treatment challenges when pulp and periapical disease are established. I

Bactericidal and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Ashitaba-Extract Ameliorate the Gingivitis and Halitosis in Dogs with Porphyromonas gulae-Infected Periodontal Disease.

Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) is a perennial herb native to Japan, traditionally consumed as a health-promoting food and herbal medicine. This study evaluated the antimicrobial, anti-halitosis, and anti-inflammatory effects of Ashitaba extract on canine periodontal disease (PD) caused by Porphyromonas gulae (P. gulae). In vitro, Ashitaba extract (0.006-0.1%) significantly inhibited P. gulae viability by up to 80% and reduced biofilm formation by approximately 10% at 0.1%. The extract also suppressed the production of volatile sulfur compounds-hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan-by over 80% and

Effects of a New Combination of Antibiofilm Enzymes, Antiadhesive Agents, and Liquorice Extracts on Plaque Accumulation in Dogs: An Unicenter, Controlled, and Randomized Study.

Dental home care of pets plays a critical role in preventing periodontal disease. Active methods of dental home care such as tooth brushing are recommended along with oral hygiene measures that can help reduce dental plaque. The study evaluated the effectiveness of a new topical oral gel (TOG) in controlling plaque accumulation in dogs. After scaling and polishing, 32 dogs were randomly assigned to either a control group with no further oral hygiene care or the TOG group that received an application of the oral gel once a day for 30 days. All dogs were fed the same diet during the trial. Five

Targeting PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling in rodent models of PMP22 gene-dosage diseases.

Haplo-insufficiency of the gene encoding the myelin protein PMP22 leads to focal myelin overgrowth in the peripheral nervous system and hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP). Conversely, duplication of PMP22 causes Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A), characterized by hypomyelination of medium to large caliber axons. The molecular mechanisms of abnormal myelin growth regulation by PMP22 have remained obscure. Here, we show in rodent models of HNPP and CMT1A that the PI3K/Akt/mTOR-pathway inhibiting phosphatase PTEN is correlated in abundance with PMP22 in peri
