[Epidemics of Staphylococcus aureus in a neonatal care unit].

The work describes an epidemic infection by Methicillin-Resistant S. aureus in a N.I.C.U. which took place during the first six months of 1986. Hospital systemic infection supported by M.R.S.A. are frequently noticed in N.I.C.U. This is related, on the one side with a selection of antibiotic resistant bacterial strains inside the hospital premises and, on the other side with increased survival of high infectious risk neonates who are subjected to invasive medical manoeuvres. The cases reported include 7 neonates (5 of which were preterms) who were affected by a severe sepsis. From an epidemiol

TLR-activated mesenchymal stromal cell therapy and antibiotics to treat multi-drug resistant Staphylococcal septic arthritis in an equine model.

BACKGROUND: Rapid development of antibiotic resistance necessitates advancement of novel therapeutic strategies to treat infection. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) possess antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties, mediated through antimicrobial peptide secretion and recruitment of innate immune cells including neutrophils and monocytes. TLR-3 activation of human, canine and equine MSC has been shown to enhance bacterial killing and clearance in vitro, in rodent Staphylococcal biofilm infection models and dogs with spontaneous multi-drug-resistant infections. The objective of this study wa

Synergistic Effects of Thymoquinone, 3-Hydrazinoquinoxaline-2-Thiol, and Amphotericin B Against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus: In vitro and in silico Evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial infections continue to pose a major global health challenge, intensified by the increasing prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The emergence of resistance mechanisms, particularly the mecA gene encoding PBP2a, significantly reduces the effectiveness of existing antibiotics, including advanced agents like linezolid and daptomycin. Although vancomycin remains a cornerstone therapy, its variable tissue penetration and growing resistance emphasize the urgent need for alternative treatments. This study e

Metagenomic perspectives on antibiotic resistance genes in tap water: The environmental characteristic, potential mobility and health threat.

As an emerging environmental contaminant, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in tap water have attracted great attention. Although studies have provided ARG profiles in tap water, research on their abundance levels, composition characteristics, and potential threat is still insufficient. Here, 9 household tap water samples were collected from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) in China. Additionally, 75 sets of environmental sample data (9 types) were downloaded from the public database. Metagenomics was then performed to explore the differences in the abundance and compositi

Antimicrobial resistance in large clostridial toxin-negative, binary toxin-positive Clostridium difficile ribotypes.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is commonly found in Clostridium difficile strains and plays a major role in strain evolution. We have previously reported the isolation of large clostridial toxin-negative, binary toxin-producing (A-B-CDT+) C. difficile strains from colonised (and in some instances diarrhoeic) food animals, as well as from patients with diarrhoea. To further characterise these strains, we investigated the phenotypic and genotypic AMR profiles of a diverse collection of A-B-CDT+C. difficile strains. The in vitro activities of 10 antimicrobial agents were determined for 148 A-B-CD
