OBJECTIVES: Children with cerebral injury often exhibit brief muscle contraction to a variety of stimuli. However, it remains to be determined whether or not the pattern of the reaction is stereotypical irrespective of the site stimulated. To answer this question, we studied electromyographic (EMG) responses to three types of stimuli in children.
METHODS: The EMG responses of cranial and limb muscles were recorded after acoustic or somaesthetic stimulation in 6 patients and 23 control subjects.
RESULTS: Acoustic stimuli evoked patterned motor activity with a rostrocaudal progression. Nose-ta

Mental disorders pose a significant global burden and constitute a major cause of disability worldwide. Despite strides in treatment, a substantial number of patients do not respond adequately, underscoring the urgency for innovative approaches. Traditional non-invasive brain stimulation techniques show promise, yet grapple with challenges regarding efficacy and specificity. Variations in mechanistic understanding and reliability among non-invasive brain stimulation methods are common, with limited spatial precision and physical constraints hindering the ability to target subcortical areas oft

PURPOSE: Assessment of the middle ear muscle reflex (MEMR) is a standard part of the clinical audiological test battery that is used to assess middle ear function and identify possible retrocochlear lesions. The use of a wideband MEMR probe allows for additional information across frequency and lower reflex thresholds compared to the standard tonal probe used clinically. Recent animal studies suggest that the wideband MEMR is sensitive to noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy, the selective loss of the synaptic connections between the inner hair cells and the afferent auditory nerve fibers. PURPOSE: The blood group can have an effect on the auditory system, and it is suggested that it could be an indicator of noise-induced hearing loss. There could be changes in the immittance findings, too, in adults having different blood groups. The present study attempted to determine if there are any differences in tympanometric results (admittance, peak pressure, gradient, resonance frequency, and ear canal volume) and acoustic reflex thresholds (ART) at 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz between individuals with different blood groups (A positive, B positive, O positive and AB positive).

After unilateral cortical or subcortical, often parieto-temporal lesions, patients exhibit a marked neglect of their contralateral space and/or body side. These patients are severely disabled in all daily activities, have a poor rehabilitation outcome and therefore require professional treatment. Unfortunately, effective treatments for neglect are just in the process of development. The present chapter reviews three aspects related to the rehabilitation of neglect. The first part summarizes findings about spontaneous recovery in patients and experimental animals with neglect. The second part d

INTRODUCTION: Non-invasive brain stimulations (NIBS), such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial direct current stimulation, transcranial alternating current stimulation, transcranial focused ultrasound, and transcranial pulse stimulation (TPS), employ electric currents or acoustic waves to induce and modulate neuroplasticity in humans. Thus, NIBS have the capacity to modify pathological plasticity while promoting plasticity in neuropsychiatric disorders, helping to ameliorate symptoms and enhance rehabilitation.
AREAS COVERED: The efficacy of TPS in treating neuropsychiatric dis

Five categories of cochlear implants are introduced: The 'classic CI', the 'combined CI' - which can be combining a CI based on electric stimulation with acoustic stimulation (EAS) or with mechanical stimulation (EMS) or with electrical stimulation of the vestibular system (VICI) -, the 'individualised CI', the 'augmented CI' and the 'totally implantable CI'. The translational research activities leading to and within these categories have been, are and will be numerous and are the subject of the compendium for which this paper is the concluding chapter. Early translational research has result…

OBJECTIVE: For hypertensive individuals, their blood pressure (BP) is often managed by taking medications. However, antihypertensive drugs might cause adverse effects such as congestive heart failure and are ineffective in significant numbers of the hypertensive population. As an alternative method for hypertension management, non-drug devices-based neuromodulation approaches such as functional electrical stimulation (FES) have been proposed. The FES approach requires the implantation of a stimulator into the body. One recently emerging technique, called low-intensity focused ultrasound stimul

Nystagmoid eye movements elicited by humming loudly was initially misdiagnosed as Tullio's phenomenon (abnormal acoustical stimulation of the vestibular apparatus owing to labyrinthine fistula). Further workup lead to a final diagnosis of a form of voluntary nystagmus characterized in some reports as "hysterical mystagmus". Some of the characteristics of this example of voluntary nystagmus differed from generally accepted descriptions.

OBJECTIVE: We report a patient who underwent cochlear implantation in an ear with long-term deafness, after an acoustic neuroma had been removed surgically from the other, hitherto good ear and the cochlear nerve had subsequently been resected to relieve severe tinnitus.
METHOD: Case report.
RESULTS: The patient could not tolerate the cochlear implant, because of a moderate headache due to the stimulation level necessary for environmental sound discrimination.
CONCLUSION: Cochlear implantation in patients with long-term deafness should be considered carefully, even if deafness is monaural.

Sound localization involves information analysis in the lateral superior olive (LSO), a conspicuous nucleus in the mammalian auditory brainstem. LSO neurons weigh interaural level differences (ILDs) through precise integration of glutamatergic excitation from the cochlear nucleus (CN) and glycinergic inhibition from the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB). Sound sources can be localized even during sustained perception, an accomplishment that requires robust neurotransmission. Virtually nothing is known about the sustained performance and the temporal precision of MNTB-LSO inputs after

The changes of cerebral hemodynamics following repetitive hemisphere-selective magnetic stimulation over the motor cortex were investigated in 8 healthy volunteers. Bilateral simultaneous monitoring of middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity was done using transcranial Doppler ultrasonography during magnetic stimulation with single, double and triple stimuli with interstimulus intervals of 100 msec. Magnetic cortex stimulation was followed by a significant increase of ipsilateral flow velocity ranging from 5.3% +/- 2.7% for single stimuli up to 8.5% +/- 4.1% for triple stimuli and by a smal

Objectives: Acoustic stimulation or sound therapy is proposed as a main treatment option for chronic subjective tinnitus. To further probe the field of acoustic stimulations for tinnitus therapy, this exploratory study compared 10 Hz amplitude modulated (AM) sounds (two pure tones, noise, music, and frequency modulated (FM) sounds) and unmodulated sounds (pure tone, noise) regarding their temporary suppression of tinnitus loudness. First, it was hypothesized that modulated sounds elicit larger temporary loudness suppression (residual inhibition) than unmodulated sounds. Second, with manipulati…

The study aims to investigate if a similar interaction between physical appearance and voice could be found in female-to-male transsexuals as had been observed in male-to-female transsexuals. A panel of judges rated "maleness" of seven female-to-male transsexuals from video-recorded speech samples using three modes of presentation: auditory-only presentation, visual-only presentation, and audiovisual presentation. For the group of transsexuals as a whole, no significant differences were found between scores given in the auditory-only mode or the visual-only mode and those given in the audiovis

Neural tracking (entrainment) of auditory rhythms enhances perception. We previously demonstrated that transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can enhance or suppress entrainment to rhythmic auditory stimuli, depending on the timing between the electrical and auditory signals, although tACS effects are primarily modulatory. This study further investigated entrainment to tACS and auditory rhythms when the electrical and auditory signals were presented together (Experiment 1, N = 34) or independently (Experiment 2, N = 24; Experiment 3, N = 12). We hypothesized that tACS effects woul

Nogo-related brain potentials may not be dependent on sensory modalities but reflect common neural activities specific to the inhibitory process. Recent studies reported that nogo potentials were elicited by not only visual and auditory but also somatosensory stimulation. However, the characteristics of this nogo potential evoked by somatosensory stimulation have been unclear because of the small number of reports. In the present study, therefore, to determine the characteristics of this potential, the effects of stimulus site and response hand were investigated. Electrical stimulation was del

The auditory brain stem response (ABR) is an evoked potential that indexes a cascade of neural events elicited by sound. In the present study we evaluated the influence of sound frequency on a derived component of the ABR known as the binaural interaction component (BIC). Specifically, we evaluated the effect of acoustic interaural (between-ear) frequency mismatch on BIC amplitude. Goals were to 1) increase basic understanding of sound features that influence this long-studied auditory potential and 2) gain insight about the persistence of the BIC with interaural electrode mismatch in human us
