Adaptation to Moderate Altitude Hypoxemia: The Example of the Valley of Mexico.

A large world population resides at moderate altitude. In the Valley of Mexico (2,240 m above sea level), its inhabitants, breathe approximately 29% more on average and have 10% increased hemoglobin concentrations compared to sea level residents, among other differences. These compensations reduce but not eliminate the impact of altitude hypoxemia. The objective of the manuscript is to review and describe the information available on health and disease at moderate altitudes, mainly with data in Spanish language from Latin-American countries. Young adults in Mexico City have an SaO2 between 92%

Biallelic truncating variants in the muscular A-type lamin-interacting protein (MLIP) gene cause myopathy with hyperCKemia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Muscular A-type lamin-interacting protein (MLIP) is most abundantly expressed in cardiac and skeletal muscle. In vitro and animal studies have shown its regulatory role in myoblast differentiation and in organization of myonuclear positioning in skeletal muscle, as well as in cardiomyocyte adaptation and cardiomyopathy. We report the association of biallelic truncating variation in the MLIP gene with human disease in five individuals from two unrelated pedigrees. METHODS: Clinical evaluation and exome sequencing were performed in two unrelated families with elevated cr

A dissemination-prone morphotype enhances extrapulmonary organ entry by Cryptococcus neoformans.

Environmental pathogens move from ecological niches to mammalian hosts, requiring adaptation to dramatically different environments. Microbes that disseminate farther, including the fungal meningitis pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans, require additional adaptation to diverse tissues. We demonstrate that the formation of a small C. neoformans morphotype-called "seed" cells due to their colonizing ability-is critical for extrapulmonary organ entry. Seed cells exhibit changes in fungal cell size and surface expression that result in an enhanced macrophage update. Seed cell formation is triggered b

Adaptation Processes of the Remaining Jejunum or Ileum after Extensive Intestinal Resection.

PURPOSE: To compare the adaptation processes of the remaining jejunum or ileum after extensive intestinal resection in a growing animal model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty 21-day old rats were divided into four groups: JG: remaining jejunum group - ileal enterectomy; IG: ileum remaining group - jejunum enterectomy; SHAM: sham-operated group - open-and-close laparotomy; and NO: non-operated animals. RESULTS: After 3 weeks, JG and IG animals had decreased weights comparing to SHAM and NO animals (p = 0.017 and p = 0.005, respectively). The histomorphometric analysis showed that in JG animals t

Life history, systematics and flight ability of the Early Permian stem-mayflies in the genus Misthodotes Sellards, 1909 (Insecta, Ephemerida, Permoplectoptera).

BACKGROUND: The stem-group of Ephemeroptera is phylogenetically important for understanding key steps in evolutionary history of early pterygote insects. However, these taxa have been mostly studied from the taxonomy point of view focused on the pattern of wing venation and often using only classical optical microscopy devices. In-depth studies on detailed morphology of the different body structures are scarcely performed, although the results are critical for elucidation of life history traits and their evolutionary pattern among the basal pterygotes. RESULTS: New information is presented on

African Naked Mole-Rats Demonstrate Extreme Tolerance to Hypoxia and Hypercapnia.

Naked mole-rats are extremely tolerant to low concentrations of oxygen (hypoxia) and high concentrations of carbon dioxide (hypercapnia), which is consistent with the environment that they inhabit. Naked mole-rats combine subterranean living with living in very densely populated colonies where oxygen becomes depleted and carbon dioxide accumulates. In the laboratory, naked mole-rats fully recover from 5 h exposure to 5% O2 and 5 h exposure to 80% CO2, whereas both conditions are rapidly lethal to similarly sized laboratory mice. During anoxia (0% O2) naked mole-rats enter a suspended animation

Transcriptomic responses of saline-adapted Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to rearing in both saline and freshwater.

The Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, is an important species for global aquaculture. Recently, a single genetic line of Nile tilapia was developed using estimated breeding values (EBVs) for body weight under moderately saline water that showed significant improvement in growth performance. To explore the molecular mechanisms underlying this enhanced growth capacity, RNA-Seq was used to profile differences in gene expression in the liver and pituitary gland of high- and low-growth performance families of male Nile tilapia progeny, reared in either saline or freshwater environments. Comparis

Visual feedback of the tongue influences speech adaptation to a physical modification of the oral cavity.

Studies examining sensorimotor adaptation of speech to changing sensory conditions have demonstrated a central role for both auditory and somatosensory feedback in speech motor learning. The potential influence of visual feedback of oral articulators, which is not typically available during speech production but may nonetheless enhance oral motor control, remains poorly understood. The present study explores the influence of ultrasound visual feedback of the tongue on adaptation of speech production (focusing on the sound /s/) to a physical perturbation of the oral articulators (prosthesis alt

Bendy to the bone: Links between vertebral morphology and waterfall climbing in amphidromous gobioid fishes.

Locomotor force production imposes strong demands on organismal form. Thus, the evolution of novel locomotor modes is often associated with morphological adaptations that help to meet those demands. In the goby lineage of fishes, most species are marine and use their fused pelvic fins to facilitate station holding in wave-swept environments. However, several groups of gobies have evolved an amphidromous lifecycle, in which larvae develop in the ocean but juveniles migrate to freshwater for their adult phase. In many of these species, the pelvic fins have been co-opted to aid in climbing waterf

The role of amino acid metabolism in signaling and metabolic adaptation to stress-induced energy deficiency in plants.

The adaptation of plant metabolism to stress-induced energy deficiency involves profound changes in amino acid metabolism. Anabolic reactions are suppressed, whereas respiratory pathways that use amino acids as alternative substrates are activated. This review highlights recent progress in unraveling the stress-induced amino acid oxidation pathways, their regulation, and the role of amino acids as signaling molecules. We present an updated map of the degradation pathways for lysine and the branched-chain amino acids. The regulation of amino acid metabolism during energy deprivation, including

Parallel shifts of visual sensitivity and body coloration in replicate populations of extremophile fish.

Visual sensitivity and body pigmentation are often shaped by both natural selection from the environment and sexual selection from mate choice. One way of quantifying the impact of the environment is by measuring how traits have changed after colonization of a novel habitat. To do this, we studied Poecilia mexicana populations that have repeatedly adapted to extreme sulphidic (H2 S-containing) environments. We measured visual sensitivity using opsin gene expression, as well as body pigmentation, for populations in four independent drainages. Both visual sensitivity and body pigmentation showed

Icy road ahead-rapid adjustments of gaze-gait interactions during perturbed naturalistic walking.

Most humans can walk effortlessly across uniform terrain even when they do not pay much attention to it. However, most natural terrain is far from uniform, and we need visual information to maintain stable gait. Recent advances in mobile eye-tracking technology have made it possible to study, in natural environments, how terrain affects gaze and thus the sampling of visual information. However, natural environments provide only limited experimental control, and some conditions cannot safely be tested. Typical laboratory setups, in contrast, are far from natural settings for walking. We used a

Monkeying around with venom: an increased resistance to α-neurotoxins supports an evolutionary arms race between Afro-Asian primates and sympatric cobras.

BACKGROUND: Snakes and primates have a multi-layered coevolutionary history as predators, prey, and competitors with each other. Previous work has explored the Snake Detection Theory (SDT), which focuses on the role of snakes as predators of primates and argues that snakes have exerted a selection pressure for the origin of primates' visual systems, a trait that sets primates apart from other mammals. However, primates also attack and kill snakes and so snakes must simultaneously avoid primates. This factor has been recently highlighted in regard to the movement of hominins into new geographic

Making Sense of the Biodiversity and Virulence of Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen responsible for listeriosis, an infection that can manifest in humans as bacteremia, meningoencephalitis in immunocompromised patients and the elderly, and fetal-placental infection in pregnant women. Reference strains from this facultative intracellular bacterium have been instrumental in the investigation of basic mechanisms in microbiology, immunology, and cell biology. The integration of bacterial population genomics with environmental, epidemiological, and clinical data allowed the uncovering of new factors involved in the virulence of L. mon

What do we know about osmoadaptation of Yersinia pestis?

The plague agent Yersinia pestis mainly spreads among mammalian hosts and their associated fleas. Production of a successful mammal-flea-mammal life cycle implies that Y. pestis senses and responds to distinct cues in both host and vector. Among these cues, osmolarity is a fundamental parameter. The plague bacillus lives in a tightly regulated environment in the mammalian host, while osmolarity fluctuates in the flea gut (300-550 mOsM). Here, we review the mechanisms that enable Y. pestis to perceive fluctuations in osmolarity, as well as genomic plasticity and physiological adaptation of the

Utilizing transcranial alternating current stimulation and functional neuroimaging to investigate human sensory adaptation.

Sensory adaptation is the reduction of neural activity after repeated exposure to a stimulus. In a recent study, Kar et al. (Kar K, Ito T, Cole MW, Krekelberg B. J Neurophysiol 123: 428-438, 2020) found that implementation of 10-Hz transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to the human middle temporal cortex (hMT+) decreased sensory adaptation and increased functional connectivity. We explain the relevance of neuroimaging utilization with tACS and suggest different methods. Additionally, future directions are provided by introducing task-relevant oscillatory frequencies for tACS rela

On the causes of geographically heterogeneous parallel evolution in sticklebacks.

The three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) is an important model system for the study of parallel evolution in the wild, having repeatedly colonized and adapted to freshwater from the sea throughout the northern hemisphere. Previous studies identified numerous genomic regions showing consistent genetic differentiation between freshwater and marine ecotypes but these had typically limited geographic sampling and mostly focused on the Eastern Pacific region. We analysed population genomic data from global samples of the three-spined stickleback marine and freshwater ecotypes to detect

How Do Runners Experience Personalization of Their Training Scheme: The Inspirun E-Coach?

Among runners, there is a high drop-out rate due to injuries and loss of motivation. These runners often lack personalized guidance and support. While there is much potential for sports apps to act as (e-)coaches to help these runners to avoid injuries, set goals, and maintain good intentions, most available running apps primarily focus on persuasive design features like monitoring, they offer few or no features that support personalized guidance (e.g., personalized training schemes). Therefore, we give a detailed description of the working mechanism of Inspirun e-Coach app and on how this app

Lipokines and Thermogenesis.

Adaptive thermogenesis is a catabolic process that consumes energy-storing molecules and expends that energy as heat in response to environmental changes. This process occurs primarily in brown and beige adipose tissue. Thermogenesis is regulated by many factors, including lipid derived paracrine and endocrine hormones called lipokines. Recently, technologic advances for identifying new lipid biomarkers of thermogenic activity have shed light on a diverse set of lipokines that act through different pathways to regulate energy expenditure. In this review, we highlight a few examples of lipokine

Adaptive mechanisms driving maladaptive pain: how chronic ongoing activity in primary nociceptors can enhance evolutionary fitness after severe injury.

Chronic pain is considered maladaptive by clinicians because it provides no apparent protective or recuperative benefits. Similarly, evolutionary speculations have assumed that chronic pain represents maladaptive or evolutionarily neutral dysregulation of acute pain mechanisms. By contrast, the present hypothesis proposes that chronic pain can be driven by mechanisms that evolved to reduce increased vulnerability to attack from predators and aggressive conspecifics, which often target prey showing physical impairment after severe injury. Ongoing pain and anxiety persisting long after severe in
