Perceptions on the use of the Positive Reappraisal Coping Intervention in recurrent pregnancy loss.

RESEARCH QUESTION: How do patients perceive the Positive Reappraisal Coping Intervention (PRCI) helped them to sustain their coping during the early waiting stages of a new pregnancy after recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL)? DESIGN: This study was a secondary analysis of qualitative process data collected as part of a feasibility two-centred randomized controlled trial to determine the effectiveness of the PRCI on the psychological well-being of women with RPL. RESULTS: Inductive thematic analysis identified three themes: 'PRCI prevents further falling', 'PRCI stimulates positive coping' and 'PR

Assessment of Specific Learning Disabilities and Intellectual Disabilities.

We review literature related to the assessment and identification of Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) and Intellectual Disabilities (ID). SLD and ID are the only two disorders requiring psychometric test performance for identification within the group of neurodevelopmental disorders in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual - 5. SLD and ID are considered exclusionary of one another, but the processes for assessment and identification of each disorder vary. There is controversy about the identification and assessment methods for SLD, with little consensus. Unlike ID, SLD is weakly related to ful

Are coping strategies and variability in their use associated with lifespan?

OBJECTIVES: Some stress-related coping strategies contribute to survival among medical populations, but it is unclear if they relate to longevity in the general population. While coping strategies are characterized as being adaptive or maladaptive, whether capacity to tailor their implementation to different contexts (i.e., flexibility of use) may influence lifespan is unknown. METHOD: In 2004-2006, participants from the Midlife Development in the United States study completed a validated coping inventory including 6 strategies and provided information on sociodemographics, health status, and

Postvention as Prevention: Coping with Loss at School.

Many Pre-K through grade 12 (PK-12) students have experienced traumatic events throughout the pandemic in a myriad of ways including the death of family members and peers, loss of social interaction and increased violence at home. The consequences can be traumatic and manifest themselves in fear, anxiety, anger, isolation, and loneliness. Too often this leads to depression, anxiety, grief, substance use disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, suicidal ideation and even suicides. This study assesses the impact of an innovative virtual human role-play simulation that prepares PK-12 educators,

Profiles of mindfulness in cancer patients and associations with psychological outcomes and coping strategies: A person-centered approach.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research confirmed the benefits of mindfulness for cancer patients' psychological well-being, but few studies considered the value of possible distinct combinations of mindfulness skills. This study aimed to (1) identify distinct mindfulness profiles in cancer patients, (2) examine socio-demographic predictors of patients with distinct profiles, and (3) examine associations of mindfulness profiles with psychological outcomes and coping strategies. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 245 people with heterogeneous types of cancer. Latent profile analysis was applied

'Pushing back': People newly diagnosed with dementia and their experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions in England.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Research into people with dementia's experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic has tended to focus on vulnerabilities and negative outcomes, with the risk of reproducing a discourse in which people with dementia are positioned as passive. Informed by concepts positioning people with dementia as 'active social agents', we aimed to identify the pandemic-related challenges faced by people recently diagnosed with dementia and examine the ways in which they actively coped with, and adapted to, these challenges. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: In-depth interviews with 21 people r

Higher Stress in Oncology Patients is Associated With Cognitive and Evening Physical Fatigue Severity.

CONTEXT: Cognitive and physical fatigue are common symptoms experienced by oncology patients. Exposure to stressful life events (SLE), cancer-related stressors, coping styles, and levels of resilience may influence the severity of both dimensions of fatigue. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate for differences in global, cancer-specific, and cumulative life stress, as well as resilience and coping in oncology patients (n=1332) with distinct cognitive fatigue AND evening physical fatigue profiles. METHODS: Latent profile analysis, which combined the two symptom scores, identified three subgroups of patients

Development of a Prognostic Awareness Impact Scale for Patients with Advanced Cancer.

Background: No reliable instruments exist to measure prognostic awareness and its psychological and behavioral impacts for patients with advanced cancer. Methods: We developed the Prognostic Awareness Impact Scale (PAIS) using a qualitative approach. During phase 1, we convened a working group with a transdisciplinary team of clinicians from oncology (n = 2), psychology (n = 2), psychiatry (n = 1), palliative care (n = 3), and survey development (n = 1) to identify key domains of PAIS. Using a consensus-driven process, the team generated an item bank for each domain. During phase 2, we conduct

Rumination, worry and negative and positive affect in prolonged grief: A daily diary study.

After bereavement, a significant minority experiences severe, persistent, and disabling grief, termed prolonged grief or complicated grief. Prolonged grief treatments may be enhanced by improving understanding of malleable risk factors in post-loss psychological adaptation. Repetitive negative thought (e.g., rumination, worry) constitutes such a risk factor. Rumination and worry are both theorized to be maladaptive through interrelations with affect, yet this assumption has not been systematically investigated in the bereaved. We aimed to fill this gap in knowledge with a baseline survey and 1

Recognising attention deficit hyperactivity disorder across the lifespan.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder and is estimated to affect approximately 10% of children and 5% of adults. It is associated with impaired functioning. Recognition and appropriate treatment can make a substantial difference. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to provide a framework for recognising ADHD and the ways that it can present at different stages of the lifespan. DISCUSSION: General practitioners have a vital role in identifying people who may have undiagnosed ADHD. It is important to take a history targeted

Occupational Stress and Catholic Priests: A Scoping Review of the Literature.

This study offers an exploratory review of the experience of stress and burnout syndrome among Catholic priests. Following Arksey and O'Malley's (Int J Soc Res Methodol 8(1):19-32, 2005, https://doi.org/10.1080/1364557032000119616 )  protocol, a scoping study was conducted. Given the scarcity of studies found on the subject, a broad selection criterion  was used, which included quantitative, qualitative and mixed studies, literature reviews and comparative studies with other professions. The results reveal various risk factors: work overload among younger generations of priests, a sociocultura

Affective Cortical Asymmetry at the Early Developmental Emergence of Emotional Expression.

Emotions have an important survival function. Vast amounts of research have demonstrated how affect-related changes in physiology promote survival by effecting short-term and long-term changes in adaptive behavior. However, if emotions truly serve such an inherent function, they should be pervasive across species and be established early in life. Here, using electroencephalographic (EEG) brain activity we sought to characterize core neurophysiological features underlying affective function at the emergence of emotional expression [i.e., at the developmental age when human infants start to show

Work Engagement among Prison Officers. The Role of Individual and Organizational Factors in the Polish and Indonesian Penitentiary Systems.

The literature on work engagement among prison officers (POs) remains rather scarce, and there are no analyses on the factors determining this phenomenon. The current study aimed to examine the relationships between work engagement, subjective well-being, coping strategies, and organizational factors utilizing the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9), the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (COPE), and Cantril's Ladder of Health Scale (CLHS), and involving 312 POs from Poland and 467 POs from Indonesia. Results showed a statistically significant relationship between active coping and

["But you've got to do something yourself as well" : Coping with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS): perspectives of those affected and those treating them in Saarland].

BACKGROUND: The complexity of the symptoms of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) poses a particular challenge for both those affected and those treating persons with the condition. The present study deals with the questions of coping with FMS from the perspective of both those affected and those treating them and their assessment of needs and requirements in terms of health services. METHODS: In a qualitative study design, the individual views of 10 FMS patients and 10 healthcare providers were examined. The patients were selected by means of "purposive sampling" and questioned in guideline-based, p

Conceptualizing Internet use disorders: Addiction or coping process?

This paper problematizes the tendency to study Internet use disorders from a perspective of addiction. It is argued that an addiction perspective, grounded in our understanding of substance use disorders, has not contributed much to an improved understanding of the antecedents and etiology of Internet use disorders. Despite this, researchers continue to frame Internet use disorders as an addiction, recently exemplified by the inclusion of Internet gaming disorder in the DSM-5 research appendix as a behavioral addiction. This paper claims that the decision to use an addiction framework to study

Narcolepsy goes to school: the three Rs for school nurses.

The sleep disorder narcolepsy most often first appears in the teen years. It can dash the dreams of optimistic, intelligent students. It can make some students the target of nasty jokes and bullying, leaving them depressed and socially isolated. It can challenge children's self-esteem, and lowered self-esteem may last a lifetime. Typically, children with narcolepsy gain weight and have no interest in participating in anything. Many constantly feel extreme tiredness, and they may experience cataplexy. School nurses and teachers can help if they know the symptoms and practice the 3 Rs of narcole

Insight in psychosis: an independent predictor of outcome or an explanatory model of illness?

While the traditional view within psychiatry is that insight is independent of psychopathology and predicts the course and outcome of psychosis, recent data from India argues that insight is secondary to interaction between progression of illness on one hand and local culture and social environment on the other. The findings suggest that "insight" is an explanatory model (EM) and may reflect attempts at coping with the devastating effects of mental disorders. Most societies are pluralistic and offer multiple, divergent and contradictory explanations for illnesses. These belief systems interact
