Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the esophagus: report of a case and review of the Japanese literature.

We report herein the case of a 79-year-old man with adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the esophagus. The tumor had a polypoid appearance and was covered by thin esophageal mucosa. As the biopsy specimens suggested a diagnosis of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma, the patient underwent subtotal esophagectomy with reconstruction of the gastric tube via the posterior mediastinum. Histologically, the carcinoma contained basaloid cells, cribriform foci, and a certain amount of eosinophilic hyaline substance. Some of the basaloid cells were stained immunohistochemically for keratin, muscle actin,

Clinical audit on tonsils and adenoid surgery. Is day surgery a reasonable option?

Four hundred and five patients who underwent tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy over a 27-month period were reviewed retrospectively to determine local patient characteristics and complication rates. The predominance of adult patients (mean age of 23.8 years), male subjects (male to female ratio of 2:1), and tonsillectomy cases (85.4%) were in contrast to studies reported in Western countries. Chronic tonsillitis or adenoiditis was the most common indication for surgery and the most frequent complications encountered were fever (20.0%) and haemorrhage (5.2%). Three patients (0.7%) had signific

Fine-needle aspiration cytology of adenoid (acantholytic) squamous-cell carcinoma.

Adenoid squamous-cell carcinoma (ASCCa) is an uncommon cancer which occurs most frequently in the skin of the head and neck region of elderly, sun-exposed individuals. Histologically, ASCCa is characterized by gland-like, "adenoid" cell groups with a central, detached acantholytic cellular component and an intact peripheral rim of cells. The cytological features of five fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) samples from four patients with primary or metastatic ASCCa are presented. These were assessed for features which would allow distinction of this variant from conventional squamous carcino

Non-random chromosome rearrangements in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands.

The chromosomal findings in 10 adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC) of the salivary glands are described. Clonal numerical deviations as the sole anomaly were detected in four cases and structurally rearranged stemlines and sidelines in four cases. An apparently identical t(6;9)(q23;p21) was found in two tumors; in one case the translocation was part of the abnormal stemline and in the other case it was the sole anomaly in a single variant cell. A similar or identical t(6;9)(q21-24;p13-23) has recently been reported in three of 15 previously published cases of ACC. The three remaining tumors with a

A comparative immunohistochemical study of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the skin and salivary glands.

We performed an immunohistochemical study that compared a primary adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the skin with two salivary gland ACC. All three tumors stained positively and in identical fashion for epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), broad-spectrum keratins, and low-molecular-weight keratins. Both EMA and CEA were localized to the luminal surfaces and the secreted contents of the tubular structures and the ductlike structures of the cribriform formations. The staining reactions for both types of keratin were more intense in the cells lining the tubular struc

The effects of metoclopramide and cloxacepride on human mast cells from adenoidal tissues.

Cloxacepride is an amide of the dopamine antagonist metoclopramide and has been reported to possess oral antiallergic properties in the rat PCA model. Both substances have now been tested in isolated mast cell preparations from human adenoidal tissues to determine whether any therapeutic antiallergic potential in man could be expected. Metoclopramide at concentrations 10(-5)-10(-3) M had no inhibitory effect but instead enhanced Con A-induced histamine release at concentrations greater than 10(-4) M. Cloxacepride at concentrations 10(-5)-10(-4) M significantly inhibited Con A-induced histamine

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast: a case with axillary lymph node metastasis.

A breast tumour with proven lymph node metastasis is conclusively characterized as an adenoid cystic carcinoma using immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy. The majority of tumour cells showed certain of the characteristic features of myoepithelial cells while the pseudocystic spaces contained large amounts of reduplicated basal lamina. A small proportion of tumour cells, however, showed epithelial differentiation with the formation of true lumina.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx: report of a case and review of the literature.

Although adenoid cystic carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the minor salivary glands, it seldom occurs in the larynx. Less than 0.25 per cent of all laryngeal carcinomas are adenoid cystic, and only 15 such cases of supraglottic origin are recorded in the literature. In only four cases the details of treatment and outcome are described. We report another case and review the literature in order to define the entity of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx. This case reveals the aggressive nature of the disease, which is often associated with the solid variant histolog

Two-Dimensional Analysis of the Size of Nasopharynx and Adenoids in Non-Syndromic Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate Patients Using Lateral Cephalograms.

OBJECTIVES: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is the most common congenital anomaly of the head and neck region. The upper airway in CLP patients is affected by retarded maxillary growth. Small size of the nasopharynx can also lead to mouth breathing. This study aimed to compare the size of nasopharynx and adenoids in non-syndromic unilateral CLP (NSUCLP) patients and healthy controls two-dimensionally on lateral cephalograms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was performed on 30 children with NSUCLP (mean age of 11.3 years) and 30 sex- and age-matched healthy controls with class I ske…

An Investigation of the Frequency of Upper Respiratory Tract Infection Pathogens and their Antibiotic Patterns in Tonsils and Adenoids of Adenotonsillectomy Patients.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the potentially pathogenic bacteria of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) and their susceptibilities to different antibiotics. METHODS: Two-hundred adenoid and tonsil specimens from 100 patients who had undergone adenotonsillectomy were obtained and analyzed bacteriologically. Identification of the pathogens was made by conventional or commercial identification systems and antibiotic susceptibility tests were carried out by disk diffusion method. RESULTS: A total of 274 pathogens were recovered from 81% specimens of 73% of the patients. Haemophilus

Role of radiotherapy in the multidisciplinary treatment of lacrimal gland adenoid cystic carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment approach for lacrimal gland adenoid cystic carcinoma (LGACC) remains controversial. OBJECTIVES: We aim to demonstrate the value of radiotherapy (RT) in the multidisciplinary treatment of LGACC. DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study. METHODS: This study was conducted on 90 patients with LGACC treated from 2002 to 2023. We compared the overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), recurrence-free survival (RFS), and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) between those treated with surgery alone versus surgery plus postoperative radiotherapy

Atypical adenoid cystic carcinoma of the palate during pregnancy: a case report.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the palate is a malignant salivary gland neoplasm typically characterized by perineural invasion, recurrent MYB-NFIB fusion, and an indolent clinical course. We report an atypical case of palatal ACC arising during pregnancy that exhibited rapid progression, upregulated estrogen receptor (ER) expression, and atypical histopathology. ACC most frequently involves the parotid and palatal glands and is histologically stratified into cribriform, tubular, and solid subtypes, with solid pattern carrying the poorest prognosis. The tumor is characteristically indolent

Clinical Characteristics and Survival in Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of Salivary and Nonsalivary Sites.

OBJECTIVES: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) typically arises from salivary glands of the head and neck but also occurs in sites outside of the head and neck; however, data regarding nonsalivary ACC are scarce. We present a comparison of the clinical behavior, treatment patterns, and survival outcomes of ACC of salivary and nonsalivary sites using the National Cancer Database (NCDB). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with ACC between 2004 and 2020 in NCDB. Patients were identified using the histology code 8200 and categorized by site based on primary site ICD-O-3 codes. Anat

[A Case of Recurrent Tracheal Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Treated with Multidisciplinary Therapy].

Tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma(TACC)is relatively rare. Therapy for recurrent TACC has not yet been established. A woman in her late 80s was diagnosed with TACC just below the vocal folds. At the same time, a solitary lung metastasis in the right upper lobe was detected on admission. After tracheal tumor resection using rigid bronchoscopy, radiation therapy 40 Gy was administered. Subsequently, right upper lobectomy was performed. Two years after first admission(FA), radiation therapy 35 Gy for tracheal recurrence was performed. Two years and 6 months after FA, wedge resection was performed

Tumor classification of adenoid cystic carcinoma: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma - ACC is a common neoplasm in major and minor salivary glands with a high risk of metastasis. Thus, the objective of the present study was to perform an analysis to better understand the histological grading systems of the ACC and its influence on tumor prognosis in terms of overall survival, disease-free and metastasis-free. This is a systematic review, with meta-analysis, based on the PRISMA parameters. The search was carried out by two independent examiners, and searches were performed in the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databas
