Arrhythmia Secondary to Cold Water Submersion during Helicopter Underwater Escape Training.

A 32-year-old, fit and healthy, Caucasian male presented with a less than 24-hour history of palpitations with the onset following participation in helicopter underwater escape training (HUET). He reported no chest pain, shortness of breath, syncope, or pre-syncope symptoms. On examination, an irregularly irregular pulse was noted at a rate of 120 beats per minute with a blood pressure of 132/84. There was no evidence of congestive cardiac failure. The electrocardiogram (ECG) demonstrated atrial fibrillation at 97 beats per minute with a normal axis, normal QRS complexes, and a QTc of 399 ms.

Airplane stroke syndrome.

Only 37 cases of stroke during or soon after long-haul flights have been published to our knowledge. In this retrospective observational study, we searched the Royal Melbourne Hospital prospective stroke database and all discharge summaries from 1 September 2003 to 30 September 2014 for flight-related strokes, defined as patients presenting with stroke within 14days of air travel. We hypothesised that a patent foramen ovale (PFO) is an important, but not the only mechanism, of flight-related stroke. We describe the patient, stroke, and flight characteristics. Over the study period, 131 million

AsMA Medical Guidelines for Air Travel: Reported In-Flight Medical Events and Death.

Medical Guidelines for Airline Travel provide information that enables healthcare providers to properly advise patients who plan to travel by air. Although there are no publicly available databases providing information on the number of in-flight medical emergencies, the few studies published in the literature indicate that they are uncommon. Minor illnesses such as near-fainting, dizziness, and hyperventilation occur more frequently. However, serious illnesses, such as seizures and myocardial infarction, also occur. In-flight deaths are also rare.

Guidelines on travel-related venous thrombosis.

Long duration travel is a weak risk factor for the development of venous thromboembolism (VTE). The incidence of VTE after flights of >4 h is 1 in 4656 and for flights of more than 8 h in low and intermediate risk flyers is around 0.5%. Severe symptomatic pulmonary embolism in the period immediately after travel is extremely rare after flights of <8 h. In flights over 12 h the rate is 5 per million. VTE may be attributable to travel if it occurs up to 8 weeks following the journey. The risk of travel-related thrombosis is higher in individuals with pre-existing risk factors for the development

Balloon mania: news in the air.

The hot-air balloon, invented by the Montgolfier brothers in 1783, enabled the French King to project his glory, the nobility to exhibit their valor, the literary public to transmit the ideal of the Enlightenment and the plebian public to rejoice in a scientific spectacle. The ensuing balloon mania helped create an integrated public that, because of its size and composition, can only be described as 'democratic' just a few years before the French Revolution. The monumental impact of the balloon was well represented in a flood of poetry, pamphlets, books, journal reports, academic papers and co

Tuberculosis and travel.

Tuberculosis is increasing worldwide with most countries having a high prevalence. Protection against tuberculosis, the risks of acquiring tuberculosis during air travel, and the evidence for clinical tuberculosis acquired on extended visits to such countries are all reviewed in this article.

Review of major injuries and fatalities in USAF ejections, 1981-1995.

Our laboratories are examining injuries and deaths resulting from mechanical forces applied to aircrew members in the course of Department of Defense aviation operations. In this paper we report only on bodily injuries sustained during ejection from US Air force, aircraft for the fiscal years 1981-1996, that is, major injuries and fatalities resulting directly from seat acceleration forces, from aerodynamic forces applied to crew members during escape through the effects of windblast and parachute opening shock; from direct contact: and from parachute landing injuries. Such injuries occur typi…

Femoral neuropathy following anticoagulant therapy for "economy class syndrome" in a young woman. A case report.

Femoral nerve palsy occasionally occurs after retroperitoneal spontaneous haemorrhage complicating anticoagulant therapy. Spontaneous bleeding and such subsequent palsy arose in a young woman during anticoagulant therapy for deep vein thrombosis. The case is reported and the anatomic basis of the nerve lesion and the methods of treatment are discussed against the background of the literature.

Airport noise and teratogenesis.

It has been suggested that exposures to high-noise levels near major airports may cause increased incidence of birth defects in the offspring of parents residing near these airports. Using data gathered in Metropolitan Atlanta during 1970 to 1972, we compared the rates of seventeen categories of defects in high- and low-noise census tracts. No significant differences were observed. However, when we subdivided the category of central nervous system defects into several subcategories of specific defects, we noted a significantly increased incidence of spina bifida without hydrocephalus in the hi

The prevalence of chromosomal aberrations in Argentine air crew members.

The authors analyzed the effects of chronic exposure of Argentine air crew members to low doses of ionizing radiations. Genetic damage induc … in groups B and C compared with groups D and E. These observations suggest that the exposure of the aircraft to ionizing radiations may induce chromosomal aberrations. However, dicentric chromosomes in both domestic and retired pilots are still high compared with dicentric control participants.

Massive transfusion on the combat field using autonomous drones: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhage is a leading cause of preventable deaths in combat settings, requiring rapid blood transfusion to improve survival. While the feasibility of drone-assisted medical logistics has been explored, its practical application in battlefield transfusion remains unreported. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This case report describes the first documented massive transfusion in a combat environment using an autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). A 27-year-old soldier sustained severe lower limb injuries from an improvised explosive device explosion and developed hemorrhagic shock in a

[The repercussions of variations in ambient air pressure on pulmonary airway dystrophy. Applications to scuba diving with mask, commercial air travel and stays in high-altitude settings].

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary airway dystrophy (PAD) is a rare disease that may be either innate or acquired. Very few publications have been dedicated to the repercussions of the air pressure variations that may be encountered during an airplane journey in a pressurized cabin, an aerial tramway ascent or a stay in a high-altitude setting. Variations may also occur during deep-sea diving with modification of absolute air pressure. STATE OF KNOWLEDGE: The published observations show that all PAD cases have been associated with accidents during exposure or with variations in ambient air pressure. The

Observations from the Korean War for Modern Military Medicine.

This paper reviews developments in military medicine during the Korean War and places them in the evolution of military medical lessons from the Second World War and the subsequent development of military medicine through the Vietnam War to the present day. The analysis is structured according to the '10 Instruments of Military Healthcare.' Whilst there were incremental developments in military medicine in all these areas, several innovations are specifically attributed to the Korean War. The introduction of helicopters to the battlefield led to the establishment of dedicated medical evacuatio

Impact of a ground intermediate transport from the helicopter landing site at a hospital on transport duration and patient safety.

BACKGROUND: Helicopter emergency medical service provides timely care and rapid transport of severely injured or critically ill patients. Due to constructional or regulatory provisions at some hospitals, a remote helicopter landing site necessitates an intermediate ground transport to the emergency department by ambulance which might lengthen patient transport time and comprises the risk of disconnection or loss of vascular access lines, breathing tubes or impairment of other relevant equipment during the loading processes. The aim of this study was to evaluate if a ground intermediate transpo
