The effects of 20% albumin (2.5 mg/kg) on plasma volume (PV) and hemodynamics, as well as albumin pharmacokinetics, were studied in ten spontaneously breathing patients 20 h after coronary bypass surgery. The alpha-emitter astatine-211 appears as one of the most suitable representatives for radiotherapy owing to its excellent decay properties. We report the studies in mice on the stability of the astatine bond to HSA-particles. Microspheres stick fast in the lung capillaries. There is a comparatively very slow decrease of radioactivity in the lungs. The 211At-labelled microspheres appear quite stable in vivo compared with a series of other biomolecules and so give a potential possibility for using the excellent radiophysical features of 211At in endogenous therapy of malignant tumours.

Activated carbon beads in which 5% activated carbon powder was embedded in 4% agarose were prepared by the emulsion technique. The column of the beads was demonstrated to effectively remove salicylic acid, warfarin, and long-chain fatty acids from solutions containing albumins by either zonal or frontal analysis under the condition of 0.1 M NaCl, pH 3.0 (HCl). The beads were also demonstrated to purify a commercial human serum albumin preparation from residual fatty acids. The beads would be of value in many biochemical purification processes in which activated carbon is employed.

Nutritional assessment was performed on 47 patients admitted to a nephrology service; renal failure was present in 39 of the 47 patients. The acid-base status of packed red cells and the influence of resuspension with human albumin, oxypolygelatine (Gelifundol), Human-serum and physiological saline were examined. It was found that the severe metabolic acidosis of packed red cells increased only slightly with storage time, while the resuspension exerted divergent effects: Human albumin and physiological saline increased the metabolic acidosis slightly, but significant. Humanserum and oxypolygelatine diminished it because of their bicarbonate content. The clinical significance especially in massive transfusion is discussed.

Coagulation and need for postoperative blood and plasma therapy were studied in 94 injured patients requiring massive transfusions (average = 14.4); 46 patients, by random selection, received supplemental albumin.
