Using a single binge drinking question to identify Russian women at risk for an alcohol-exposed pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Low rates of contraception and at-risk drinking place many Russian women at risk of an alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP). The only realistic way to determine when women are at risk of AEP is by self-reports. A U.S. study found that a single binge-drinking question (SBD) effectively identified nearly all women whose drinking placed them at risk of AEP. METHODS: The present study replicated the U.S. STUDY: Participants were 689 non-pregnant Russian women of childbearing age who were at AEP risk. Their answers to SBD, "During the previous three months, how often did you have four or

Body mass index, tobacco chewing, alcohol drinking and the risk of oral submucous fibrosis in Kerala, India.

OBJECTIVE: While chewing areca nut is considered a risk factor for oral submucous fibrosis, the effects of cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, and body mass index (BMI) have not been examined; nor are they well established. In this study we investigated the association between BMI, smoking, drinking, and the risk of oral submucous fibrosis. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study within the framework of an ongoing randomized oral cancer screening trial in Kerala, India. Trained health workers conducted interviews with structured questionnaires and oral visual inspections to diagnose oral …

Fetal alcohol syndrome: a new primate model for binge drinking and its relevance to human ethanol teratogenesis.

Ethanol was administered nasogastrically to four gravid pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) weekly from 40 days after conception to term. Three animals received 2.5 gm/kg and one received 4.1 gm/kg per dose. One animal aborted after the first dose of 2.5 gm/kg ethanol. Serum ethanol and acetaldehyde were measured after each dose in the other three animals, who carried to term. After delivery the infants were assessed for growth, dysmorphic features, and neurologic and psychological development over six months and were compared with 10 age- and sex-matched controls. Complete autopsies with n

Alcohol demand and alcohol use disorder among adolescents and young adults who drink heavily: An exploratory analysis including sex differences.

Behavioral economic alcohol demand, or the reward value of alcohol consumption, consistently shows associations between alcohol use and alcohol use disorder (AUD) in adults, yet research within clinical youth populations (considered to be ages 15-24) remains limited. It is critical to better understand how demand functions in clinical youth populations to predict alcohol related outcomes. Moreover, given the narrowing gap between male and female youth in alcohol use prevalence in recent years, exploring sex differences in alcohol demand and its role in the relationship between demand, alcohol

Biomarkers of recent drinking, retrograde extrapolation of blood-alcohol concentration and plasma-to-blood distribution ratio in a case of driving under the influence of alcohol.

This case report describes the police investigation of a road-traffic accident involving a collision at night (01.00 am) between a car and a truck in which a passenger in the car was killed. The driver of the truck was found responsible for the crash although a roadside breath-alcohol test was negative (<0.1 mg/L breath or 20 mg/100 mL blood). Because of injuries sustained in the crash, the female driver of the car was not breath-tested at the time but was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. After swabbing the skin with isopropanol an indwelling catheter was inserted at 01

Severity of alcohol dependence in decompensated alcoholic liver disease: comparison with heavy drinkers without liver disease and relationship to family drinking history.

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare alcohol dependence severity in patients with severe alcoholic liver disease (ALD) with that in heavy drinkers without liver disease. METHODS: Short alcohol dependence data and lifetime alcohol questionnaires applied to unselected heavy alcohol drinkers (>60 units/week (M) or 40 units/week (F) for >5 years) with either (a) decompensated ALD (patients n = 136) or (b) no evidence of serious liver disease by clinical, biochemical and ultrasound evaluation ('controls' n = 148). RESULTS: The SADD alcohol dependence severity score (range 0-42) in patients w

Alcohol brief intervention, specialty treatment and drinking outcomes at 12 months: Results from a systematic alcohol screening and brief intervention initiative in adult primary care.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) in adult primary care is an evidence-based, public health strategy to address unhealthy alcohol use, but evidence of effectiveness of alcohol brief intervention (ABI) in real-world implementation is lacking. METHODS: We fit marginal structural models with inverse probability weighting to estimate the causal effects of ABI on 12-month drinking outcomes using longitudinal electronic health records data for 312,056 adults with a positive screening result for unhealthy drinking between 2014 and 2017 in a large hea

Maturing out or in? Demographic determinants of young adult drinking trajectories and midlife alcohol use disorder risks.

BACKGROUND: Heavy alcohol use in young adulthood impacts future health, including alcohol use disorder (AUD). Dynamic trajectories of adolescent to adult alcohol use are understudied, as are sociodemographic correlates of trajectories. METHODS: We employed repeated-measures latent class analysis to identify trajectories of age 18-30 alcohol use among participants from Monitoring the Future, a representative, ongoing national sample of US adults surveyed longitudinally from 1976 to 2020 (N = 32,121). In each survey, participants' alcohol use was categorized as abstinence, "higher risk" (daily

Influence of Parental Alcohol Consumption on Adolescent Drinking: A Middle-Range Theory Based on Roy's Adaptation Model.

The objective of this study is to develop a middle-range theory describing how adolescents adapt to parental alcohol consumption from a nursing perspective, using Fawcett's conceptual-theoretical-empirical framework. The theory of adolescent adaptation to parental alcohol consumption explains how adolescents cope with parental problem drinking, considering personal, family, and social factors. Parental alcohol use is conceptualized as a focal stimulus, while adolescent age and sex, stress, and parenting practices act as contextual stimuli, influencing adaptation. The theory's six propositions

Experiences of a Pre-Treatment Sober Month in Individuals With Alcohol Use Disorder Pursuing Controlled Drinking Goals.

INTRODUCTION: Interest in managing alcohol-related risks through temporary abstinence challenges has grown significantly. Studies on abstinence challenges in the general population show improvements in for example mental health, blood pressure, insulin resistance and alcohol consumption, but studies in clinical samples are lacking, including qualitative research on patients' perspectives on such a clinical intervention. This study aimed to explore the patients' experiences of a sober month before initiating psychological treatment for controlled drinking. METHODS: A qualitative interview stud

Screening for high-risk drinking and alcohol use disorder: update of the 2023 national clinical practice guideline.

BACKGROUND: Current screening tools for harmful alcohol consumption have fallen out of step with recent guidance on the health risks of alcohol. To address this gap, the Canadian Research Initiative in Substance Matters updated the screening recommendations for high-risk drinking and alcohol use disorder (AUD) in the 2023 national clinical practice guideline. METHODS: Following a systematic review of literature published between Jan. 1, 2013, and Feb. 24, 2023, that examined screening tools for high-risk drinking and AUD, the updated recommendations were developed by a multidisciplinary natio

Predictors of alcohol use disorder risk in young adults: Direct and indirect psychological paths through binge drinking.

Alcohol-use disorders (AUD) risk is highly prevalent in university students, and is associated with both intraindividual (e.g., metacognitions, personality traits) and interindividual (e.g., social motives, drinking identity, drinking norms) psychological factors. Binge drinking (BD) also constitutes a widespread drinking pattern in youth, distinct from AUD risk and mainly predicted by interindividual factors. As BD is itself a risk factor for AUD, we tested a dual psychological path model to AUD risk, combining a direct path (including intra/interindividual factors independent from BD) with a

A brief online intervention for sleep problems and heavy drinking: Impacts on alcohol- and sleep-related problems.

There is growing evidence that poor sleep contributes to increased alcohol use and related impairment among college students (DeMartini & Fucito, 2014), with heavy drinking exacerbating these effects. Efforts to reduce this impact via online personalized feedback interventions (PFIs) have had limited success, and there is a dearth of research on attempts to simultaneously address these concerns among college students using brief, web-based interventions. The present study assessed intervention efficacy in addition to the impact of sleep disturbance on alcohol outcomes using a novel, brief, onl

Association between alcohol drinking frequency and depression among adults in the United States: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a major contributor to the global burden of diseases, and alcohol intake is often considered to be associated with depression. However, the relationship between alcohol drinking frequency and depression remains unclear. This study aims to explore the association between alcohol drinking frequency and depression. METHODS: This study collected NHANES data from 2009 to 2016, involving 17,466 participants. Depression was diagnosed based on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and alcohol drinking frequency was collected through questionnaire surveys. Multifactoria…

Alcohol Exposure and Disease Associations: A Mendelian Randomization and Meta-Analysis on Weekly Consumption and Problematic Drinking.

Alcohol consumption significantly impacts disease burden and has been linked to various diseases in observational studies. However, comprehensive meta-analyses using Mendelian randomization (MR) to examine drinking patterns are limited. We aimed to evaluate the health risks of alcohol use by integrating findings from MR studies. A thorough search was conducted for MR studies focused on alcohol exposure. We utilized two sets of instrumental variables-alcohol consumption and problematic alcohol use-and summary statistics from the FinnGen consortium R9 release to perform de novo MR analyses. Our

An Examination of Protective Factors for Bisexual Stigma and Alcohol Use among Heavy Drinking Young Bisexual Women.

Bisexual women are an at-risk population for hazardous drinking. One factor contributing to their risk is binegativity (discrimination from heterosexual and lesbian/gay communities). Research has found a positive association between binegativity and alcohol use, but few studies have explored protective factors (bisexual identity affirmation, connectedness to bisexual community) that may buffer this relationship. Consequently, we examined the impact of bisexual identity and connectedness on the association between binegativity and alcohol use and problems. Participants were 225 self-identified
