UNLABELLED: Pathways from alcoholism to recovery are documented; less often are those from drug addiction to alcoholism. Biographical approaches allow analyzing how people change their uses and talk about their trajectories of recovery.
METHODS: Three hundred and forty-one people (34% women) in the Paris area were questioned on their trajectories with a biographical questionnaire. Some open questions were aimed to understand the connection they made between events in their lives, how recovered they felt and what they considered strengths or obstacles. All the participants had stopped at least…

The objective of this article is to estimate the prevalence and factors associated with alcohol use disorder in men living in rural quilombola communities located in the north of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study carried out in 2019 based on structured interviews and application of the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT). Binary logistic regression was conducted. It was found that 21,3% of respondents had risky consumption, harmful use and probable alcohol dependence. There was a greater chance of alcohol use disorder among quilombola men aged between 18 and 39

BACKGROUND: The deleterious effects of alcohol on the brain are replete in literature. Only a few neurophysiologic measures can pick up the neuronal dysfunctions, one of them being visual-evoked potential (VEP). A very limited amount of data exists on the progression of neural abnormalities related to the spectral severity of alcoholism.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the impact of spectral severity of alcoholism through VEP and to understand the emergence of any specific pattern or morphometric abnormalities related to alcohol-induced neuropsychiatric presentations.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 9…

AIMS: To evaluate the clinical validity indicators for the nursing diagnosis of dysfunctional family processes related to alcohol abuse.
BACKGROUND: Alcoholism is a chronic disease that negatively affects family relationships. Studies on the nursing diagnosis of dysfunctional family processes are scarce in the literature. This diagnosis is currently composed of 115 defining characteristics, hindering their use in practice and highlighting the need for clinical validation.
DESIGN: This was a diagnostic accuracy study.
METHODS: A sample of 110 alcoholics admitted to a reference centre for alc…

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking among female and male alcoholics has not been extensively studied as a factor related to intensity of alcohol craving during residential treatment and corresponding sobriety length.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study assessed self-reported sobriety outcomes in patients with alcohol dependence at 3-month intervals over 12 months after completion of a 30-day residential treatment program. Demographic and clinical variables were collected including smoking status, alcohol craving utilizing the Penn Alcohol Craving Scale (PACS), and alcohol relapse. Statistical

BACKGROUND: Although decreased counts of peripheral blood (PB) B cells-associated with an apparently contradictory polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia-have been reported in chronic alcoholism, no information exists about the specific subsets of circulating B cells altered and their relationship with antibody production. Here, we analyzed for the first time the distribution of multiple maturation-associated subpopulations of PB B cells in alcoholism and its potential relationship with the onset of liver disease.
METHODS: PB samples from 35 male patients-20 had alcoholic hepatitis (AH) and 15 chr…

The current frequent use of disulfiram in alcohol relapse prevention, and the possible extension of the indication (cocaine addiction, pathological gambling) make in-depth knowledge about therapeutic effects, interactions, contraindications, and side effects of disulfiram in alcohol relapse prevention the psychological-psychotherapeutic and supportive effects are perhaps more important than the pharmacological effects. The efficacy and safety of supervised disulfiram treatment is verified in a number of studies (also in co-morbid psychiatric patients). In addition, in this review options were

Little is known about post-combat psychological reactions of warriors prior to the Twentieth Century. We estimated rates of suicide, alcohol … d year, and 1.8 in the year after the war. Rates for most other relevant domains, including chronic alcoholism, "nostalgia," and insanity, were extremely low (<1.0%) by modern day standards. Data provide contextual information on suicide and psychiatric variables for combatants during the U.S. Civil War, a brutal modern war with vastly higher casualty rates …

BACKGROUND: Traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (TSAH) related to alcohol abuse is a notable risk factor. Here, we investigated the vascular morphology and biomechanics of TSAH in rat models of acute alcoholic intoxication and chronic alcoholism rats to explore the possible mechanisms of TSAH.
METHODS: Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into acute alcoholic intoxication and chronic alcoholism groups. Edible spirituous liquor (56% vol/vol) was intragastrically given (15 mL/kg) once to the rats in the acute group, and given twice daily (8 mL/kg for 2 weeks and 12 mL/kg for another 2 week…

BACKGROUND: Although personality factors and family history of substance abuse influence how individuals experience pain and respond to analgesics, the combined effects of those factors have not been extensively studied. The objective of this study was to consider the possible role of personality trait of neuroticism and family history of alcoholism on the experience of pain and their role in the analgesic response to an ethanol challenge.
METHODS: Forty-eight healthy subjects participated in this study; thirty-one had a positive family history of alcoholism (FHP), seventeen had a negative fa…

Developing pharmacotherapies to treat alcohol dependence and associated health problems traditionally has been based on gaining a better understanding of the neuroscience underlying alcohol-drinking behavior. To date, three medications have been approved for the treatment of alcohol dependence: disulfiram (Antabuse®), naltrexone (Revia®, Vivitrol®, and Naltrel®), and acamprosate (Campral®). However, these medications have modest efficacy, and there is a great need for newer medications that target different neurochemical systems and which could be used either as adjunctive treatments or to tre

CONTEXT: Modern life style and affluence lead to changes in people's outlook on various habits, including alcohol intake. Some of them will fall prey to the addictive nature of the drink.
AIMS: Present study was done to evaluate the responses to comprehensive alcohol expectancy questionnaire (comprehensive effects of alcohol--CEOA) in order to test the tendency towards alcohol intake among the First Year Medical (MBBS) students of our college--that is, to assess the positive or negative reinforcement they would expect if they consumed alcohol.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: The study was done by givin

Chronic alcohol abuse is a ubiquitous health and societal problem, with a growing prevalence in the older population. Alcoholism is a source of substantial deterioration in brain tissue and has been consistently observed in vivo and postmortem in white matter. To quantify the potential compounded effect of age and alcoholism, we used conventional structural MRI and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to examine the macrostructural and microstructural integrity of the corpus callosum, one of the most prominent white matter structures of the brain, in 131 adults, age 27-75 years. Compared with the 74…

The appetite regulating peptide leptin has recently been associated with craving for alcohol and lifetime ethanol intake. However, effects of anti-craving drugs on leptin have not been studied until now. The objective of our study was to test the hypothesis whether leptin plasma concentration in abstinent alcohol addicts during treatment with naltrexone vs. acamprosate is associated with abstinence duration and craving for alcohol. Leptin plasma concentration was measured in 160 recently detoxified alcohol addicts during a double-blind, placebo-controlled relapse prevention trial with naltrexo

This work is a morphometric study of several parenquimatous structures of rats' submandibular gland which were submitted to experimental cronic alcoholism and others which were recovered after detoxication during 30 days. It was used 3 groups (5 rats in each group): Control, Alcoholic and Detoxicated. The fact of alcohol acts in body tissues, take us to believe that changes in the submandibular glands morphology of rats which were submitted to cronic alcoholism can happen. In fact, after alcoholisation and detoxication there is an occurence of significant statistically differences when we conf…
