Refractive Errors and Amblyopia in Mexican Children Aged 6-12 Years: Clinical Prevalence and Visual Impact.

Background: Refractive errors (REs) and amblyopia are the leading causes of visual impairment (VI) in children worldwide; however, national data for Mexico are scarce. Objective: We aim to estimate the clinical prevalence of RE, refractive amblyopia, and associated visual impairment (VI) in Mexican children aged 6-12 years. Methods: We analyzed 784,372 non-cycloplegic eye examinations from Salud Digna outpatient clinics across all 32 Mexican states (2021-2025). REs were classified as myopia (≤-0.50 D), hyperopia (≥+2.00 D), or astigmatism (≤ -1.00 D cylinder). Refractive amblyopia was defined …

Inter-Ocular Fixation Instability of Amblyopia: Relationship to Visual Acuity, Strabismus, Nystagmus, Stereopsis, Vergence, and Age.

PURPOSE: Amblyopia damages visual sensory and ocular motor functions. One manifestation of the damage is abnormal fixational eye movements. Tiny fixation movements are normal; however, when these exceed a normal range, the behavior is labeled "fixation instability" (FI). Here we compare FI between normal and amblyopic subjects, and evaluate the relationship between FI and severity of amblyopia, strabismus angle, nystagmus, stereopsis, vergence, and subject age. METHODS: Fixation eye movements were recorded using infrared video-oculography from 47 controls (15.3 ± 12.2 years of age) and 104 am…

Artificial intelligence-based screening for amblyopia and its risk factors: comparison with four classic stereovision tests.

INTRODUCTION: The development of costs-effective and sensitive screening solutions to prevent amblyopia and identify its risk factors (strabismus, refractive problems or mixed) is a significant priority of pediatric ophthalmology. The main objective of our study was to compare the classification performance of various vision screening tests, including classic, stereoacuity-based tests (Lang II, TNO, Stereo Fly, and Frisby), and non-stereoacuity-based, low-density static, dynamic, and noisy anaglyphic random dot stereograms. We determined whether the combination of non-stereoacuity-based tests …

Refractive error, risk of amblyopia and eye care services utilisation among Nunavik Inuit in Northern Canada.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Nunavik Inuit patients, in Northern Canada, have a significant burden of refractive error. The frequency at which they access eye care is insufficient. This exposes children of this population to a substantial risk of refractive amblyopia. BACKGROUND: No data are available on eye health and services among Nunavik Inuit in Quebec, Canada. This study aims to describe the prevalence of ametropias, risk of refractive amblyopia, and eye health services uptake amongst a sample of Nunavik Inuit. METHODS: Retrospective cohort using data from electronic records of the sole governm…

Intermediate spatial frequency letter contrast sensitivity: its relation to visual resolution before and during amblyopia treatment.

We examined the loss of letter contrast sensitivity (LCS) measured using the Pelli-Robson chart, and the extent to which any such loss was modulated by spectacle wear and occlusion therapy in children participating in an amblyopia treatment trial. Their initial mean interocular difference in logMAR acuity was approximately three times that of their LCS (0.45 vs 0.14 log units). Log LCS was weakly though significantly correlated with logMAR visual acuity (VA) for all VAs better than 0.90 (r = -0.19, 95% CI: -0.28 to -0.10) whereas for all VAs of 0.90 or poorer, log LCS was markedly and signific…

[Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of hysteric amblyopia using psychophysical and electro-ophthalmological examination methods (author's transl)].

In three patients with psychogenic amblyopia the computerized visual field, the ERG, the flash light (H-EP) and pattern reversal stimulated (M-EP) cortical potentials were recorded. Differential diagnosis between psychogenic amblyopia on the one hand, and functional amblyopia and organic lesions of the retrobulbar visual pathways on the other was shown to be possible. In the cases with organic retrobulbar lesions of visual pathways, visual field defects and pathologic H-EP's and M-EP's were found. In functional amblyopia only the M-EP responses are diminished in amplitude. In psychogenic ambly…

Foveal cone electroretinograms in strabismic amblyopia: comparison with juvenile macular degeneration, macular scars, and optic atrophy.

A hand-held stimulator-ophthalmoscope was used to elicit foveal cone electroretinograms (ERGs) from fifteen patients with strabismic amblyopia. The ERGs were in response to a 4 degrees stimulus visualized on the fundus and centred on the fovea throughout testing. Foveal cone ERGs from amblyopic eyes were normal in amplitude and normal in b-wave implicit time. Interocular differences in ERGs in patients with amblyopia were no greater than those in normal subjects. Patients with comparable visual acuity loss due to macular scars or juvenile hereditary macular degeneration had abnormal foveal con…

Strabismus and amblyopia disrupt spatial perception but not the fidelity of cortical maps in human primary visual cortex.

Amblyopia is a common disorder of spatial vision and is frequently associated with the presence of anisometropia, strabismus, or both, during visual development. For highly visible stimuli, subjects with strabismic amblyopia often report marked spatial distortions, but the neural basis of this supra-threshold deficit is not well understood. Here, we used a combination of behavioural measurements and visual field mapping with high spatial-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at 7 T to assess perceptual distortions in 12 participants with strabismic amblyopia and 9 control sub…
