Bibliometric analysis of Alzheimer's and dementia research in Latin America.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia is increasing rapidly in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), but research output remains limited. Tracking publication trends, themes, and collaborations is key to guiding regional research and policy. METHODS: Bibliometric analysis was conducted on dementia-related publications from 21 LAC countries (1990 to 2024) using Scopus. Thirteen keywords identified relevant articles, classified into themes through artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted and manual review. Bibliometrix and VOSviewer assessed publication trends, country and institutional output, and collaboratio

[Chronic immunomodulatory treatment in MOGAD: Experience in Latin America].

Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is an autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system that predominantly affects children and young adults and presents a heterogeneous clinical spectrum. Disability in MOGAD is mainly associated with relapses. Treatment of MOGAD includes management of the acute episode and, in selected cases, the use of chronic immunomodulatory therapy to prevent relapses and sequelae. Currently, there are no therapeutic guidelines based on randomized clinical trials for MOGAD. Among the most commonly used options are oral immunosuppres

Management preferences for hip fracture care in Latin America.

PURPOSE: Despite an increase in hip fractures in Latin America, few studies have assessed management of these injuries in this region, impeding efforts to understand current treatment patterns, highlight knowledge deficits, or develop best practice guidelines. This study sought to determine current practices in hip fracture management reported by surgeon-experts in Latin America. METHODS: Based on input from a panel of Latin American orthopaedic traumatologists, a case-based survey evaluating hip fracture management preferences was developed and distributed using a snowball sampling method. EXPRESS: A Comprehensive Review of Lyme disease in Latin America.

Lyme disease (LD) is caused by a bacterial genospecies complex named Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.), which includes B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (B.b.s.s). Originally described in North America, LD has also been described in other parts of the Northern Hemisphere, and in Eurasia. Different B.b.s.l. species, transmitted through geographically diverse tick vectors, are associated with different clinical presentations of the disease. In recent years, the incidence and the endemic range of LD have steadily expanded to include areas of the world with tropical climate, including Latin Americ

Genomic exploration of the journey of Plasmodium vivax in Latin America.

Plasmodium vivax is the predominant malaria parasite in Latin America. Its colonization history in the region is rich and complex, and is still highly debated, especially about its origin(s). Our study employed cutting-edge population genomic techniques to analyze whole genome variation from 620 P. vivax isolates, including 107 newly sequenced samples from West Africa, Middle East, and Latin America. This sampling represents nearly all potential source populations worldwide currently available. Analyses of the genetic structure, diversity, ancestry, coalescent-based inferences, including demog

Genetic diversity of Dioctophyme renale in Southern South America.

Dioctophyme renale, the giant kidney worm, is a nematode related to Trichuris sp and is distributed worldwide. These parasites locate in the kidney of their definitive hosts (mainly belonging to the order Carnivora) and have an indirect life cycle with an annelid as the main intermediate host. Humans are rarely affected, but in those that are, 1 or both kidneys are destroyed. In South America, D. renale is widespread in riparian regions where changing climatic conditions, environmental degradation, and compromised sanitation are increasing the risk of distribution of this parasite, including h

Identification of Hunnivirus in Bovine and Caprine Samples in North America.

Diarrhea in young ruminants is a global issue and causes significant economic losses worldwide. In addition to common pathogens like rotavirus, coronavirus, and astrovirus, new viruses can be identified through unbiased next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques. Here, we report the initial identification of a hunnivirus from a one-month-old goat with diarrhea using shotgun metagenomic NGS. A complete hunnivirus genome was recovered. Phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that this goat hunnivirus was more closely related to cattle hunnivirus than to small ruminant hunnivirus strains, suggesting

Disparities in Influenza Control and Surveillance in Latin America and the Caribbean.

To identify measures that mitigate the impact of influenza in Latin America and the Caribbean, we compared the burden and detection capacity in humans and animals after the 2009 pandemic. The incidence rate in people was higher in Chile (23.72 per 100,000 people), but the impact was greater for Guatemala (503.78 disability-adjusted life years per 100,000 people). Brazil, Peru, Argentina, and Mexico built better medical testing, with typing being less frequent in Chile and Argentina, where costs for medical care were higher. The positivity rate among avian and nonhuman mammals was 5.8%, with mo

Medical debt in America, part III: Debt collection.

In the first two parts of the series, we described the sources of high prices in health care and the severe constraints faced by low-income patients when seeking to access care without incurring medical debt. In this third and final installment, we examine the origins of aggressive medical debt collection practices, their deleterious consequences for patients, and potential solutions.

Trends in the epidemiology of systemic endemic mycoses in Latin America.

The changing epidemiology and diagnostic challenges of coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, and paracoccidioidomycosis in Latin America are reviewed. The agents responsible for these three systemic endemic mycoses are dimorphic fungi from the Onygenales order, all of which are classified as World Health Organization fungal priority pathogens. However, the mycoses they cause span a notable diversity of contrasting etiologies, target populations, geographic distributions, and factors (including climate changes) that determine their incidence. New, updated maps are presented that reflect the curre

Toxoplasmosis in South America: a hybridization-driven disease burden?

Human-mediated migrations have reshaped Toxoplasma gondii in South America through massive hybridizations between Old World domestic lineages and wild native populations. We propose that this convergence of domestic adaptation and virulence traits from wild strains underlies the continent's unusually severe disease burden, particularly ocular toxoplasmosis, with major public health implications.

Powassan and other emerging neuroinvasive arboviruses in North America.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) represent a group of pathogens with increasing global relevance, some of which cause neuroinvasive disease. Transmitted by arthropod vectors and maintained by a variety of primary and amplifying hosts, epidemics are dependent on numerous environmental and anthropogenic factors. This review serves to highlight several important neuroinvasive arboviruses relevant to North America and discuss the neurologic presentations, diagnosis, outcomes, and future trends. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent shifts in the epidemiology and ecology of arboviruses i

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Latin America and Australia.

The epidemiologic and demographical features of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) vary significantly across countries and continents. In this review, we analyze current data regarding prevalence of NAFLD in Latin America and Caribbean and Australia and review some peculiarities found in these regions. We stress the need of greater awareness of NAFLD and the development of cost-effective risk stratification strategies and clinical care pathways of the disease. Finally, we highlight the need of effective public health policies to control the main risk factors for NAFLD.

[Epidemiology of myasthenia gravis in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America].

INTRODUCTION: Although today we live in a globalised world, the ties established between the Iberian Peninsula and the countries of Latin America are particularly strong, with important migratory flows. This connection may condition the development of diseases that involve a genetic influence, which may in turn be modulated by various environmental factors. The aim of this review is to determine the descriptive epidemiology of myasthenia gravis in the Iberian Peninsula and in Latin America. DEVELOPMENT: A literature search was conducted in Medline, LILACS and Google Scholar for the different
