The aetiology of transient global amnesia. A case-control study of 114 cases with prospective follow-up.

A case-control comparison of 114 transient global amnesia (TGA) patients using both normal community-based controls (n = 109) and transient ischaemic attack (TIA) controls (n = 212) showed no evidence of an increased risk of TGA associated with any of the conventional risk factors for cerebrovascular disease. However, migraine was significantly more common in the TGA patients than in either control group. A prospective longitudinal study using actuarial (life table) analysis confirmed that the prognosis of the TGA patients was strikingly better than that of the TIA controls. An important minor

Incidental Petrous Apex Cephalocele Presenting With Transient Global Amnesia: A Case Report and Rapid Literature Review.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) constitutes a rare clinical entity that manifests with temporary memory without any other neurological manifestation. Several pathogenetic mechanisms have been implicated, including temporal hypoperfusion, venous congestion, and cortical spreading potentials. Accordingly, the only relevant imaging findings are hippocampal CA1 areas of restricted diffusion on diffusion-weighted images. In the current case report, we present the rare case of a patient with TGA associated with bilateral petrous apex cephalocele (PAC). A 63-year-old female presented with a single epi

Cerebral Small Vessel Disease Burden in Patients with Transient Global Amnesia and its Relationship with Recurrence.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral Small Vessel Disease (CSVD) has not been systematically studied in patients with Transient Global Amnesia (TGA). We aimed to investigate the CSVD burden in patients with TGA and its relationship with TGA recurrence. METHODS: We retrospectively examined 69 patients diagnosed with TGA in a single center between January 2015 and November 2023. The overall CSVD burden and single CSVD imaging markers, including enlarged perivascular spaces in the hippocampus (H-EPVS), were measured in each patient and compared with those in 69 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Multivariate

Chronic hippocampal subfield damage in transient global amnesia revealed by 7T MRI: All is not reversible?

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a neurological condition characterized by temporary memory loss and classically associated with a reversible unilateral punctate focus of restricted diffusion in the cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) region of the hippocampus. Historically, the lesions were considered to be transient in nature with no long-term imaging abnormality. However, more recent studies have challenged the concept that there are no long-term neurological sequelae. In line with this evidence, we explore the role of ultra-high-resolution imaging using 7 Tesla MRI to evaluate for long-term imaging abn

Juvenile absence epilepsy relapsing as recurrent absence status, mimicking transient global amnesia, in an elderly patient.

We describe a 68-year-old woman who had typical absence seizures since 14 years of age. The absences were refractory to treatment and persisted into adulthood, with no seizure-free periods until seizure control at 59 years of age. After six years of being seizure-free, she presented with an episode characterized by mental confusion, abnormal behaviour, and amnesia, lasting for several hours. An EEG performed the day after, when the patient had already recovered, was unremarkable. The episode was interpreted as transient global amnesia. After two and three years, respectively, she presented wit

Can we remember future actions yet forget the last two minutes? Study in transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical syndrome characterized by the abrupt onset of a massive episodic memory deficit that spares other cognitive functions. If the anterograde dimension is known to be impaired in TGA, researchers have yet to investigate prospective memory (PM)--which involves remembering to perform an intended action at some point in the future--in this syndrome. Furthermore, as executive functions are thought to be spared in this syndrome, TGA provides an opportunity to examine the impact of a massive "pure" memory impairment on PM. We assessed 38 patients with a newly

[The recording of cognitive evoked potentials during and after transient global amnesia: report of three cases].

It is of interest to record event-related potentials in the course of transient global amnesia (TGA) because the hippocampus and diencephalon, generally considered to be the sites of the dysfunction responsible for the amnesic episodes are also considered as two possible generators of the P300 wave. However, the only four cases reported so far in the literature showed an intact auditive P300 in three cases and an intact auditive P300 with reduction of visual P300 in one case. Here are reported four new cases. The P300 wave was readily identifiable in all four cases, without any amplitude reduc

A Rare Case of Exercise-Induced Transient Global Amnesia as an Exclusive Presenting Symptom of Hippocampus Infarct.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a rare condition characterized by a temporary loss of the ability to form new memories. Retrograde episodic memory loss may also occur but to a lesser extent. Although TGA is generally benign, its sudden onset and similarity to more dangerous conditions like transient ischemic attack (TIA) or cerebral vascular accident (CVA) can be concerning. We present the case of a 70-year-old female who experienced confusion and general memory loss after a vigorous workout on her stationary exercise bike. After displaying considerable amnestic symptoms, she was admitted to

Simultaneous occurrence of transient global amnesia and Takotsubo syndrome triggered by caring for a terminally ill relative.

Takotsubo syndrome and transient global amnesia can occur simultaneously, not only in the context of acute but also long-standing emotional stress. Probably, hypothyroidism and migraine make the patient more susceptible to both of these disorders.

Transient global amnesia as a revealing sign of giant transtentorial meningioma: case report and review of the literature.

Since 1974, only 14 papers in MEDLINE-indexed journals have linked transient global amnesia (TGA) to a brain tumor. Among these, two described the entity of transient epileptic amnesia (TEA), whereas most reports lacked the functional investigations that might differentiate the two conditions. Only six cases have linked TGA or TEA to a meningioma, and none of them were transtentorial. We report the case of a 75-year-old woman who presented with one episode of TGA as a sole symptom of a giant transtentorial meningioma in the right hemisphere. A sudden attack of TGA with a rather typical clinica

Aortic dissection as a possible cause of pure transient global amnesia: a case report and literature review.

A 55-year-old man suddenly developed anterograde and retrograde amnesia. His colleagues witnessed the onset of the episode and reported that 2 h before the onset of the amnesic attack the patient transiently became pale. Physical examination was unremarkable and neurological examination revealed no focal neurological sign although a laboratory investigation revealed leukocytosis. Pure transient global amnesia (TGA) was diagnosed. The anterograde amnesia resolved 20 h after onset, but the causes of his transient paleness precedent to TGA and leukocytosis were unclear. Thirty-four hours after on

Transient global amnesia and amaurosis fugax in a patient with common carotid artery occlusion--a case report.

The etiology of transient global amnesia (TGA) is debatable. The hypothesis of a thromboembolic cause of TGA has been questioned by recent case control studies. Occlusion of the common carotid artery (CCA) is rare. Although amaurosis fugax (AF) is a hallmark of ipsilateral internal carotid artery disease, its occurrence in CCA occlusion is less known. Association of these three conditions in a patient may imply pathophysiologic significance. Here, the authors report a 76-year-old man who suffered from a spell of TGA and then several attacks of AF of the right eye. Progressive occlusion of the

Guideline "Transient Global Amnesia (TGA)" of the German Society of Neurology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Neurologie): S1-guideline.

INTRODUCTION: In 2022 the DGN (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Neurologie) published an updated Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) guideline. TGA is characterized by a sudden onset of retrograde and anterograde amnesia for a period of one to a maximum of 24 h (with an average of 6 to 8 h). The incidence is estimated between 3 and 8 per 100,000 population/year. TGA is a disorder that occurs predominantly between 50 and 70 years. RECOMMENDATIONS: The diagnosis of TGA should be made clinically. In case of an atypical clinical presentation or suspicion of a possible differential diagnosis, further diagnost

Transient global amnesia does not increase the risk of subsequent ischemic stroke: a propensity score-matched analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Data regarding the risk of cerebrovascular events following transient global amnesia (TGA) remain controversial. While some neuroradiological studies suggest an underlying cerebrovascular etiology, results from the clinical studies have been largely conflicting. We, therefore, aimed to evaluate the risk of ischemic stroke in a large, nationally representative sample of patients with TGA. METHODS: We utilized the Nationwide Readmissions Database 2010-2015 to identify all hospitalizations with the primary discharge diagnosis of TGA. We selected a 2% random sample of all elective a

Transient global amnesia: a study with Tc-99m ECD SPECT shortly after symptom onset and after recovery.

PURPOSE: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterized by sudden loss of memory of recent events, transient inability to retain new information, and retrograde amnesia. We investigated the changes of regional cerebral blood flow in patients with TGA shortly after symptom onset and after recovery using Tc-99m-ethyl cysteinate dimer single-photon emission computed tomography (Tc-99m ECD SPECT) and statistical parametric mapping (SPM) analysis. METHODS: Six right-handed patients with TGA were studied using Tc-99m ECD SPECT shortly after symptom onset and after recovery. As a control group, six

Transient global amnesia and brain tumour: chance concurrence or aetiological association? Case report and systematic literature review.

We report a patient presenting with episodes of transient amnesia, some with features suggestive of transient global amnesia (TGA), and some more reminiscent of transient epileptic amnesia. Investigation with neuroimaging revealed an intrinsic lesion in the right amygdala, with features suggestive of low-grade neoplasia. We undertook a systematic review of the literature on TGA and brain tumour. Fewer than 20 cases were identified, some of which did not conform to the clinical diagnostic criteria for TGA. Hence, the concurrence of brain tumour and TGA is very rare and of doubtful aetiological

Transient Global Amnesia Triggered by Migraine in a French Tertiary-Care Center: An 11-Year Retrospective Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The etiology of transient global amnesia (TGA) remains unclear, and flow disturbances in the mesial temporal lobes secondary to venous congestion have been proposed as a potential cause. The occurrence of TGA during a migraine attack is a rare condition. METHODS: This 11-year retrospective study in one French center describes patients' characteristics, type of migraine, investigations, treatment with vasoconstrictor during the TGA/migraine attack, and outcome in patients who had TGA during a migraine attack. RESULTS: Among 8821 new patients, 6 cases of TGA occurring during a migra
