The profile of psychiatric symptoms exacerbated by methamphetamine use.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine use can produce symptoms almost indistinguishable from schizophrenia. Distinguishing between the two conditions has been hampered by the lack of a validated symptom profile for methamphetamine-induced psychiatric symptoms. We use data from a longitudinal cohort study to examine the profile of psychiatric symptoms that are acutely exacerbated by methamphetamine use. METHODS: 164 methamphetamine users, who did not meet DSM-IV criteria for a lifetime primary psychotic disorder, were followed monthly for one year to assess the relationship between days of methamphetami

Physical victimization of rural methamphetamine and cocaine users.

Substance use and physical violence often coincide, but little has been published on the correlates associated with receipt of partner versus nonpartner physical violence for rural users of methamphetamine and/or cocaine. In this study, participants' substance use, depression and past-year physical victimization were assessed. In separate logistic regression models, received partner violence in females was associated with age; alcohol, cocaine, and methamphetamine abuse/dependence; and number of drugs used in the past 6 months. In males, received nonpartner violence was associated with age, co

Dopaminergic system activity under stress condition - seeking individual differences, preclinical studies.

Dopaminergic system activity in limbic structures (reward system) is related to motivational processes and adaptation to changing environmental conditions. Stress conditions can cause dopaminergic dysfunction, reduce motivational processes and induce compensatory drug use. The susceptibility to stress is characterized by individual variability. Psychostimulants such as cocaine, amphetamine and its derivatives act as positive reinforcers, affecting mood changes. Prolonged use of psychoactive substances can cause persistent plastic changes in the limbic system (disruption of neurogenesis, neuron

Associations between the COMT rs4680 Gene Polymorphism and Personality Dimensions and Anxiety in Patients with a Diagnosis of Other Stimulants Dependence.

BACKGROUND: Research on the hypodopaminergic hypothesis of addictions showed that hypodopaminergic activity in males predicted the number of drugs used and is associated with drug-seeking behavior. Variant alleles may cause hypodopaminergic functioning as a result of the reduced density of dopamine receptors, decreased response to dopamine, increased dopamine clearance or metabolism in the reward system. The catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is involved in the metabolism of dopamine. Personality traits may mediate the genetic predisposition to substance use disorders additively by various mo

Oxytocin as a natural antipsychotic: a study using oxytocin knockout mice.

It has been previously suggested that oxytocin (Oxt) may act as a natural antipsychotic. To test this hypothesis, we investigated whether disruption of the oxytocin gene (Oxt-/-) made mice more susceptible to the psychosis-related effects of amphetamine (Amp), apomorphine (Apo) and phencyclidine (PCP). We examined drug-induced changes in the prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the startle reflex, a measure of sensorimotor gating deficits characteristic of several psychiatric and neurological disorders, including schizophrenia. We found that treatment with Amp, Apo and PCP all had effects on PPI. Howe

Effects of Saponins on Lipid Metabolism: The Gut-Liver Axis Plays a Key Role.

Unhealthy lifestyles (high-fat diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, too little exercise, etc.) in the current society are prone to cause lipid metabolism disorders affecting the health of the organism and inducing the occurrence of diseases. Saponins, as biologically active substances present in plants, have lipid-lowering, inflammation-reducing, and anti-atherosclerotic effects. Saponins are thought to be involved in the regulation of lipid metabolism in the body; it suppresses the appetite and, thus, reduces energy intake by modulating pro-opiomelanocortin/Cocaine amphetamine regulated transc

Prevalence and incidence of mental disorders among First Nations and other individuals using methamphetamine in Manitoba, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Methamphetamine use can precipitate or exacerbate mental health disorders. In Winnipeg, Canada, First Nations are at particular risk of harms associated with addiction and mental illness. This study examines the prevalence and incidence of comorbid mental health disorders among First Nations and other Winnipeggers using methamphetamine. METHOD: Using population-based administrative health data, we identified First Nations and all other Winnipeg (AOW) residents who had a methamphetamine-related health system contact between 2013 and 2020 (cases) and created control groups that we

Methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine abuse in substance-abusing adolescents.

The prevalence of methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine misuse and abuse was examined in 450 adolescents referred for substance abuse treatment. Twenty three percent reported nonmedical use of these substances and six percent were diagnosed as methylphenidate or dextroamphetamine abusers. Abuse was more common in individuals who were out of school and had an eating disorder. Methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine abuse appears to be much less common than abuse of most other substances. It does occur, however, and parents and schools need to exert greater control over the dispensing of these med

Social-cognitive difficulties in former users of methamphetamine.

OBJECTIVES: Methamphetamine (MA) abuse is associated with neurocognitive impairment. We investigated whether important aspects of social-cognitive function are similarly disrupted. METHODS: A total of 12 adults with a history of MA dependence (average duration of use, 3.9 years), currently engaged in rehabilitation and abstinent for an average period of 6 months, and 12 MA naive participants completed measures of facial affect recognition, theory of mind, executive function and memory. RESULTS: MA users were impaired on the measures of facial affect recognition and theory of mind (ds = 1.75

Why is parkinsonism not a feature of human methamphetamine users?

For more than 50 years, methamphetamine has been a widely used stimulant drug taken to maintain wakefulness and performance and, in high doses, to cause intense euphoria. Animal studies show that methamphetamine can cause short-term and even persistent depletion of brain levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine. However, the clinical features of Parkinson's disease, a dopamine deficiency disorder of the brain, do not appear to be characteristic of human methamphetamine users. We compared dopamine levels in autopsied brain tissue of chronic methamphetamine users with those in patients with Parki

Depression and diethylstilbestrol exposure in women.

Fifty women exposed to diethylstilbestrol (DES) in utero, 50 of their unexposed sisters (sister controls) and 43 women with abnormal Papanicolaou smears (population controls) were tested using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule to assess differences in depression and other kinds of psychologic impairment possibly associated with DES exposure. There were significant differences between DES-exposed women and their sisters in major depression and major recurrent depression. Papanicolaou controls were more depressed in comparison to sister controls. However, there were no significant differences in

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-related psychomotor activity and altered neuronal activity in the medial prefrontal cortex and striatum in the A53T mouse model of Parkinson's disease and other synucleinopathies: Findings from an "endophenotype" approach.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with an increased risk of Parkinson's disease (PD) and other synucleinopathies later in life. The severity of the ADHD phenotype may play a significant role in this association. There is no indication that any of the existing animal models can unify these disorders. Using the Open Field Test, amphetamine-challenge test, Western blot and immunohistochemical analysis of neuronal activity markers (c-Fos, FosB and ΔFosB) we performed a deliberate neurobehavioral characterization of 6-month-old hemizygous A53T carriers (A53T+) of the JAX

Methamphetamine and Opioid Cue Database (MOCD): Development and Validation.

INTRODUCTION: Drug cue reactivity (DCR) is widely used in experimental settings for both assessment and intervention. There is no validated database of pictorial cues available for methamphetamine and opioids. METHODS: 360 images in three-groups (methamphetamine, opioid and neutral (control)) matched for their content (objects, hands, faces and actions) were selected in an initial development phase. 28 participants with a history of both methamphetamine and opioid use (37.71 ± 8.11 years old, 12 female) with over six months of abstinence were asked to rate images for craving, valence, arousal

[Study on religious addiction as a potential novel type of behavioral addiction in an adolescent population].

INTRODUCTION: Religious addiction is a new behavioral addiction, featured with pathologic religious activity. AIM: The authors examined whether this new phenomenon appears in adolescence, and whether it correlates with substance use and mental health variables. METHOD: The General Addiction Screening Tool was used to investigate the presence of religious addiction among youth (N = 656; mean age, 16.5 years; 49.2% females). Besides monthly and lifetime prevalence of substance use, variables of psychological well-being (e.g., depression, aggression, optimism) were also detected. RESULTS: Reli

Two-year trajectory of stimulant use in 18- to 21-year-old rural African Americans.

Little is known about stimulant use trajectories of rural African American youth. The purpose of the present study is to explore substance use over 24 months in 98 African Americans, ages 18 to 21, who used cocaine or methamphetamine 30 days prior to baseline. The majority was male, unemployed, and had not graduated from high school. At baseline, almost half of the participants met criteria for abuse/dependence of cocaine--the primary stimulant used--which decreased to 25% by the final follow-up. Similar decreases were noted in rates of alcohol and marijuana abuse/dependence, although monthly

Contrasting trajectories of heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine use.

Current literature has shown that heroin addiction is characterized by long periods of regular use persisting over the life course, whereas the course of stimulant use is less understood. The current study examined long-term trajectories of drug use for primary heroin, cocaine (crack/powder cocaine), and methamphetamine (meth) users. The analyses used data from five studies that collected longitudinal information using the Natural History Instrument, including 629 primary heroin users, 694 cocaine users, and 474 meth users. Drug use trajectories over the 10 years since initiation demonstrated
