We report on a severe allergic reaction during urethral catheterisation, initially erroneously attributed to natural rubber latex (NRL). Anaphylactic shock occurred in a 9-year-old myasthenic boy after induction of anesthesia for thymectomy. Resuscitation was successful. Subsequent skin testing identified latex as the cause. We have previously described that normal mouse serum inhibits the PCA reaction mediated by IgE. The present study attempts to characterize this PCA inhibitory factor from the biologically active fraction of the serum. Penicillin and its derivatives are the commonest cause of drug-induced anaphylaxis, accounting for some 500 deaths per year in the United States.
